Today we have the pleasure of chatting with the exceptional Karl Grohhman of Boston MA. Karl is a performing drumset/percussionist, composer, and educator from Boston, MA. During 2015-2017 he was the touring drummer for The Novel Ideas. While studying many instruments and genres, Mr. Grohmann has experimented with indie rock, minimalism, West African kora and percussion, and avant-garde new music, using found objects as experimental sound sources.
Career: As an educator, he is on the faculty of St. Sebastian’s School and Ursuline Academy in Massachusetts, where he teaches music theory and ensembles. Karl received his BM from Berklee College of Music and his MM in Composition from Longy School of Music where he studied with Paul Brust. With over fifteen years of performing professionally in Boston, he has recently performed with the Weston Friendly Society (Fiddler on the Roof, State Farm, Bye Bye Birdie) guitarist Ian Ethan Case, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (A.R.T Oberon Theater), Thoroughly Modern Milly (Turtle Lane Playhouse), Boston Opera House, Museum Of Science, Melodeego, Copal, Boston Babydolls, and Lovewhip.
Karl’s Sponsors: Our Guest is endorsed by Vic Firth Sticks, Pergamon Cymbals, and Porter and Davies.
Resources Mentioned: The Word “timbre” – In music, timbre (/?tæmb?r/ TAM-b?r, also known as tone color or tone quality from psychoacoustics) is the perceived sound quality of a musical note, sound or tone. Timbre distinguishes different types of sound production, such as choir voices and musical instruments, such as string instruments, wind instruments, and percussion instruments. It also enables listeners to distinguish different instruments in the same category (e.g. an oboe and a clarinet).
