It was in October, 1999 when Katya first played in public. It was well known Mix club, the revolutionary place in Moscow underground culture. In the beginning it was just like a hobby. For few years of working like a fashion editor of different glossy magazines she dj-d in different places around Russia, more or less doing something enjoyable. It took 6 years to understand that music is the center of the universe, and that making things for own pleasure can be satisfying and worth for living. The interest in electronic music came from school days, when older kids put some Depeche Mode graffity in the yard. After “stealing” their first album it became clear that real music of the future should sound familiar. There was not much possibilities to built a sound studio, but that was easy to make tape-mixes for friends. While studying in the State Economy University, Katya met the “top-ten” Moscow dj’s, started to play, organized parties with the guys like Ian Pooley, Louie Austeen etc. For now Katya acts as traveling-a-lot-around-russia dj and booker. She works closer with Deepmix since summer 2007, covering foreign issues, bookings and visual-art. During last 2 years she performed in different countries like Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Latvija, Egypt, Ukrain, Moldova etc. During last two years she played at the same stage with people like Mathew Johnson feat Cobblestone Jazz (Is It What It is, Wagon repair), Dave Clarke (Music Man), Bruno Pronsato (Telegraph, Milnor Modern), Jeff Milligan (Revolver), Gabriel Ananda (Gluckskind, Karmarouge), AME (Sonar Kollektiv), Tiga, Daso (Connaisseur), Stephan Bodzine (Herzblut), Thomas Brinkmann (MaxErnst), Yapacc (Frisbee), Matthias Tanzmann (Moon Harbour), Rene Breithbarth (Treibstoff), Franklin de Costa (Karmarouge Noir), Ian Pooley , Martinez (Out of Orbit), Pan/Tone (Mobilee), 3 Channels (Trapez), Greg Thugfucker, Anya Schneider (Mobilee), M.I.A.(SubStatic), Banco de Gaya, Rainer Trueby, Nightmares on Wax, GUS GUS etc. Her dj-set is not a jumping-screaming show, nothing like that. Some people say that Katya acts as a man – sure hand, firm sound and candour emotions. Katya Vanila on MySpace
