In Episode 147, we are joined by Bill Lindsay & Jonathan Barbarin from Thunderhawk Alements. This fairly unknown brewery is inside the Miralani Makers District which includes three other breweries, two wineries, sake, mead, cider, food, coffee, and possibly spirits soon. Also called Beeralani, this stretch of Miramar has a lot for craft enthusiasts to try.
Interview
We first wonder what is Thunderhawk’s ethos as a brewery. That easily leads to Bill and Jon’s background in homebrewing. We sidetrack a little bit into if you should use bad beer in cooking, save it by aging it, or just toss it. Then realize our glasses are empty.
After a short break, we come back to Beagle talking about how many breweries there are and Jon discusses how that number led them to open how they did. We eventually ask another question and wonder what the statistics are of the brewhouse. We find out that one of the versions they have of their Saison is one that includes pine needles. We talk more about their other beers and find out which ones are popular and which style of beer they did not have on tap when they opened. Greg wonders if the market segment they had in their business plan is what came true. The conversation morphs into talking about crowlers.
We take another break and come back with a challenge from Jon. He will serve us a Smoked Coconut Porter that both Greg and Beagle are skeptical about. In the meantime, we have a social media question and then get into the news.
Social Media Question
jsaunders44 – Which bars or parts of town will I start seeing their beers on tap? Or they going the retail/cans distribution route first? This beer is so muy Bueno! Especially #electricyouth & #nightpiercer
