This pre-Valentines Day special features jazz tunes inspired by LOVE. Not a lot of typical sappy love songs in this set, but some hard-driving emotional compositions. We start with some a great tunes from the 50’s performed by Jackie McLean and Lester Young, eventually breaking out into newer ground, with some soulful music by Mulgrew Miller, Aretha Franklin and Kevin Mahogany. We switch over to some fusion guitar with Mike Stern and Joe Beck. We finish this lovely show with one of my favorite romantic jazz ballads by Jimmy Greene entitled Love In Action. First we pay homage to a couple of great jazz artists who passed away five years ago this week. Alice Coltrane and Michael Brecker certainly left their mark on jazz music with some passionate playing and composing as you can hear, here. This is followed by a new release from Miguel Zenon which perhaps should have made my top album picks for 2011. Chucho Valdez is coming to the University of Connecticut’s Jorgensen Auditorium, and I would like to play some tunes from his great CD Chucho’s Steps. We begin this show with a tribute to the great Sam Rivers who passed away this week at the age of 88. Sam Rivers was one of the fi nest free jazz players and composers. First we hear his work on Dave Holland’s great Conference of the Birds CD, and then we continue with some of River’s work as a band leader. After the Sam Rives tribute, I begin the first part of our Best Of 2011 Jazz CD releases. This week we hear from Jen Allen, Ralph Peterson, Mike DiRubbo and Geoff Vidal. This show features two great albums, released over 40 years apart. The first is from the Curtis Brothers, a new driving force in J azz. Their recently released album is Completion of Proof. It features some great playing by a new generation of jazz musicians. I also recently re-discovered Wayne Shorter’s Super Nova. This provocative album represents to me the evolution of jazz in its most creative form as Shorter pushes the music into uncharted territory leading to the jazz-fusion era. Also in this podcast is music from Dexter Gordon, Chris Potter and a new release by a fine New Orleans musician, Khris Royal showing some great chops on tenor and some rockin’ out compositions with his group Dark Matter. A recent trip to my wife’s home town gave us the op portunity to re-connect with the Rochester jazz scene on two successive evenings. In this podcast, we bring you drummer Mike Melito and guitarist Bob Sneider who captivated an audience at a local mexican restaurant. The next track is from The Westview Project, a jozz trio with the addition of Doug Stone on tenor sax. Westview covered some great jazz standards including Dexter Gordon’s Cheese Cake which inspired me to open tonights show with this track. This all electric jazz-fusion show is in response to the lack of electricity here in Connecticut following a rare winter snow stor m. Hundreds of thousands of Connecticut residence are still without power. Hopefully this show will provide some musical power to warm your inner being. Electric Rendezvous from Al Dimeola sets the pace for the frenetic musicality to come. Chick Corea’s Return to forever follows with more of DiMeola’s scorching guitar and Chick’s eclectic but swinging keyboard solos. My all-time favorite prog-rock composition, Close to the Edge from Yes takes us back to the early 70’s. Mahavishnu Orchestra’s epic composition with a full orchestral backing follows. Mwandishi Herbie Hancock ends part one of this podcast with some early fusion explorations that was heavily influenced by what Miles had been creating at that time.
