Radiothon is over and its back to just playing some great jazz music. Thanks to all that supported this program and WHUS. I will g ive more formal thanks on next weeks show. I had been away for this Saturday's broadcast and this is a show I did as a fill-in on March 11. I carefully edited out any mention of Radiothon as I have grown tired of pleaing for donations. No real theme here, though as I listen, most of this program features guitar and bass as leaders. This is the official WHUS Radiothon week. I really appreciate the great support shown by our podcast listeners last week. We recei ved pledges from all over the world. However, the station has a long way to go to meet its fund raising goal, and showing your support lets WHUS know that you appreciate jazz programing and this podcast. We have a special gift for our supporters. It is a CD called Private Tracks that is a compilation of rare jazz tracks that is unavailable or difficult to obtain anywhere else. Go to my Radiothon Page for information on the CD and how you can pledge your support. This show is a reprise of one of my favorite shows from July 2008. It is also a plea to support WHUS, this podcast and Jazz radio programming. WHUS FM is the broadcast home of In The Groove, Jazz and Beyond. Without this great, listener supported radio station, this show and Podcast would not be possible. I am asking our listeners to please show your support for this station, this Podcast and Jazz programming by making a donation. This year I am offering as a gift for your donation a special album called Private Tracks that is made of tracks that have been sent to the station by some great jazz artists that are often featured on In The Groove (e.g. Greg Abate, Mike DiRubbo, Lauren Sevian, Bob Reynolds and more). These are tracks that are not available commercially and are difficult if not impossible to find except on this special offer. Come to the RADIOTHON PAGE for more information on how you can support this program and get the Private Tracks album. My playlists are often a reflection of my emotional state state of mind, and this is certainly one of those shows. This set is mel low and meditative, yet intense with emotion and heartfelt playing as should be the case when any great artist creates in his or her art-form. In this case, we hear some great jazz compositions and a few beautiful ballads. Of note is Branford Marsalis' cover of the Coltrane classic A Love Supreme and Pharoah Sanders' Body and Soul. The show concludes with the fine piano of Bill Evans on Miles' Blue and Green, and Keith Jarret's cover of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. Playlist Track * Artist * Album A Love Supreme: Acknowledgment * Branford Marsalis Quartet * Footsteps of Our Fathers A Day To Mourn * Booker Ervin * The Freedom Book We Used to Dance * Joel Frahm * We Used To Dance Insight (from my mother) * Cindy Blackman * Music for the New Millennium Body and Soul * Pharoah Sanders * Crescent with Love Mahjong * Wayne Shorter * Juju Blue in Green * Miles Davis * Kind of Blue Smoke Gets in Your Eyes * Keith Jarrett * Yesterdays

My regular show this week was preempted for sports, so I have a posted a broadcast from a December fill-in I did for DJ Slammin' S ammy on WHUS FM. We start with a cookin funky track from Boston based Akashic Record. We continue on with a wide range of electric Jazz-Rock fusion that shows the breadth of this genre. Perhaps the most outrageous track is from Miles from India. From the website; A Cross-Cultural Celebration of the Music of Miles Davis by India's Foremost Musicians Collaborating with the Legendary Musicians Who Comprised the Various Miles Davis Bands Over the Years. An interesting CD which I don't know that I enjoy in its entirety, but sure has some very interesting moments and a great cast of musicians. Playlist Track * Artist * Album Jammin' Time * Akashik Record * New Days Ahead Electric Eyes * Alex Skolnick * Transformation Dach's Reduction * Jon Larson * Strange News from Mars Shadow of Lo * Return to Forever * Return to the 7th Galaxy Game * Stanley Clarke * The Toys of Men Miles Runs the Voodoo Down * Various * Miles from India Double Nickel * Yellow Jackets feat. This show is my tribute to the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. I have edited excerpts of Obama's historic inaugural speec h with Sonny Rollins' landmark recording "Freedom Suite". Recorded in 1958 this was Rollins' musical protest of the state of race relations during the height of our segregation era. Fifty years later, we have elected an African American to the highest office in the land, in what is possibly the beginning of the final chapter in the history of race relations in America. I have juxtaposed Rollins' expression of anger and despair of racial inequality in 1958, with Obama's message of hope and unity as a tribute to the truly historic election and inauguration of our new President. The podcast continues with some other tracks, written in the spirit of freedom and hope that work well with the theme of the show. The podcast ends with a dedication to another great jazz artist, David 'Fathead' Newman, who sadly passed away this week. Playlist Track * Artist * Album Obama Freedom Suite Freedom Suite * Sonny Rollins * Freedom Suite mixed with Obama Inaurguaral Address Freedom Jazz Dance * Dr. Lonnie Smith * Jungle Soul Anthem of Hope * Jimmy Greene * Overcomer's Suite This I Dig of You * David Fathead Newman * Song for the New Man Georgia on my Mind * David Fathead Newman * I Remember Brother Ray

Review of 2008 in music logo de In the Groove, Jazz and Beyond

These tracks were chosen from some of our favorite releases in 2008. Many are also a reminder of some of the great musical perform ances we had a chance to experience this past year. Claire and I took many trips to NYC, as well as catching some great jazz acts at local venues. Some of the highlights for us were Monday night jazz jams at Black Eyed Sally's, Hartford International Jazz Festival, Porkpie Hat Series, and Firehouse 12. The JVC Jazz Festival at Newport was also a highlight and is represented on this podcast. This is not a best of 2008, but more of a review of our year in music. I hope that listeners to In The Groove are in some way able to experience the great joys that jazz music has brought to our lives, through this podcast, YouTube videos, and information and links on my website. A show inspired by the rains that fell in the North East this week. It begins with one of the finest versions I have heard of Afte r the Rain as arranged and performed by Anat Cohen on her recent CD. Another track I am particularly fond of is Dave Holland's Equality and the beautiful soulful alto solo by Antonio Hart. The Miles from India track should please a lot of listeners that write to me digging the Indian fusion sets that I do, but contrasted with Milestones from Mile's sextet from 1958 really shows how he could swing. Playlist Track * Artist * Album After the Rain * Anat Cohen * Notes from the Village Typhoon 11 * Eric Alexander * It's all In The Game Deluge * Wayne Shorter * JuJu Not So Softly * Lauren Sevian * Blueprint Tolerance * Greg Osby * Nine Levels Equality * Dave Holland * Pass it on All Blues * Various * Miles From India Milestones * Miles Davis * Cool and Collected Season of Change * Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band * Season of Change

Once again my regular broadcast is preempted by UCONN Sports. I was able to satisfy my "radio habit" with a one hour time slot fil l-in. Although we have no particular theme, I would like to draw your attention to the incredible, 16 plus minutes, Chico Freeeman/Arthur Blythe track Footprints (Wayne Shorter composition). This and several other tracks I have played on recent shows were brought to my attention from Ken Blanchard's excellent blog Jazz Note SDP. Check out his blog for some very valuable recommendations to build your jazz music library. Another eclectic mix with no real theme. This show is the remaining tracks of a broadcast from October 4 of this year. Since I on ly had 4 tracks, I added a bonus recording of the great Charles McPherson whom we saw this weekend performing at the Jazz Standard with Tom Harrell. I just tacked it on to the end of the radio broadcast so it is not announced, but this track shows McPherson's strong bebop style in the tradition of Charlie Parker. Playlist Track * Artist * Album Hotel * Garaj Mahal * W00t Nia * Wallace Roney * Jazz Who Let the Cats Out * Mike Stern * Who Let the Cats Out Michael * Ernie Watts * Turning Point bonus track not in original broadcast Blue 'N Boogie * Charles McPherson * Manhattan Nocturne

Last Sunday I attended the Newport Jazz Festival for first time. It was an incredible experience. Three stages, with jazz artists performing simultaneously throughout the day. This show features those artists that we got the chance to see at the Festival. They run the gamut from jazz legends, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins to newcomers Esperanza Spaulding and Lionel Loueke. Perhaps that best performance for me was the Chris Potter Underground. The amazing tenor sax player was seen all day playing with nearly every act, running from one stage to the next. (due to technical problems in the studio, the Newport feature starts halfway into the show). Check out these links to read my blog entry about the Newport Jazz Fest, and to see my photo gallery. If you have pictures from the jazz fest, I invite you to upload them to the gallery. Due to a technical problem, my August 2 show was not recorded (like I forgot to hit the Start button on the CD-R). So, I resurrect ed a recording of an old show, that I thought was interesting. This is the first hour of a show that was originally broadcast in July of 2006. I may post the second hour of the show in the near future. Another eclectic mix of old and new. Starting off with an old classic from the 70's from Les McCann (Dig the relevant lyrics), to new releases from Joey DeFrancesco. We'll conclude this hour with some modern Miles from the In A Silent Way and Jack Johnson Complete Sessions sets. Go to www.jazzandbeyond.com for playlist.
