Welcome to our 18th edition of Play My Music where artists from all over the world submit their music to us for broadcasting. First we begin David W. Solomons. David has been composing since 1969, concentrating on lyrical tonal music and experimenting in various modes. To learn more about David, please visit his website at www.dwsolo.com We will hear 3 works by David, first we will hear “Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis”, this will be followed by “Chinese New Year for String Quartet” and then we will hear “Variations on Ke Arona.” ViolettesbyBecky.com, A Music Gifts Company, holds an annual youth music contest for ages 10 thru 18 with scores and recording submitted online. Volunteer judges are esteemed music professionals, who review the students’ entries not only for prize placement, but with an aim to provide encouraging constructive comments. The competition is divided into 2 categories, Composition and Songwriter, each with a junior and senior division. We are proud to play for you 2 compositions by this year’s winner Antonia Bentel. First we will hear “Alluvion” and this will be followed by “Trench Coat.” In Alluvion, I set out to explore the way the ebb and flow of sounds, like tides or waves, can carry a kind of aural sediment with them in each rhythmic cycle. As this piece washes towards and then away from the listener, it gradually deposits thickening layers of character and meaning, like the slow accumulation of sand on the shore. As it progresses, the piece builds upon and tumbles over itself, then rolls over and withdraws back into the main body again. In the end, the waves of the music recede peacefully and calmly, leaving behind a sedimentary memory. Program Notes for Trench Coat. So much in a young person's life is bathed in light. Clear, reassuring light that makes life understandable. But where there is light, there are frequently shadows. The shadows shape the light and define its limits. Not necessarily threatening or creepy, shadows nevertheless make it hard to see or understand what they cloak. In order to understand what they contain, one has to patiently peer into them, until one's eyes and mind adjust. It is a solitary and, at times, lonely process.
