Is your business a grind?
Well, that’s just life, right? We get up every day and go to a place called “work”, not a place called “play”.
We’ve just got to grit our teeth and plough on.
Or is that just another limiting self-belief?
Have you ever gone to work and had an absolute blast from beginning to end, doing only what you love? I’m happy to give you the good news… your next Monday can be like that. I talk more about this in podcast episode 454 of The 7 Minute Mentor.
“No One Can Do It Like I Can!”
One of my stickiest limiting self-beliefs is I should do everything in my business because no one else can do it to the standard I expect.
It doesn’t seem like such a bad belief, does it? It sounds like a self-esteem booster. You just want to be in control of your own business, right? But the truth is, it cuts the legs out from under your business. Of course it limits you if you think you need to do everything or even to check everything!
Do you think Kevin Johnson checks every Starbucks coffee? Nope. At some point, the leadership of Starbucks got over the egotistical need to be the bottleneck, and they put good people in place to fully take on certain responsibilities.
How will you ever break out of your lifestyle prison if you think you need to do everything? How will you ever take a dream week if you need to be in your business all the time?
When you learn what all the biggest companies in the world already know and you give your employees the responsibility they deserve, it frees you up to do what you’re best at and what brings you the most joy!
Fall In Love With Your Mondays
I’m not going to tell you to take a day off, work a four hour work week, or do only what’s important, integral, or interesting (the “Triple I Principle”).
Instead, plan your next Monday to be 7 straight hours of only the work you love.
Whether it’s coding, writing, reading, designing, talking to customers, clients, or prospects, whether it’s recording interviews or shooting videos or planning your strategy… whatever it is you love to do, plan a 7-hour day of it next Monday.
What will happen?
I’m not going to ruin the surprise. Just do it, and make a note of how you feel at the end of the day.
“But What About…??”
Don’t worry. Nothing bad will happen.
You can still do all the urgent, important things you need to get done.
Just do them on Tuesday.
The world will not come to an end, believe me. Even if you turn off your email, unplug your phone, and lock yourself in a soundproof room, everything will be waiting for you when you emerge.
If you got ill and took a day off, your business wouldn’t collapse in on itself, would it? I certainly hope not!
Well, this is no different. Just take one day for yourself. Not a day “off”, but a day for yourself. Go to work, same as always, but this time, only do the work you love.
The Unexpected Benefits Of Joyful Work
You’re not running from the cold realities of work. You’re learning through first-hand experience what it feels like to do what you love before you do anything drastic, like change career or start a new business in pursuit of a life without tedium. You don’t have to search far and wide for a perfect day, doing only what you love. You can have that right now!
Firstly, the work you do in that day is likely to be full of creativity and enthusiasm. It’ll be the best code you’ll write all week, the best writing, the best research, the best interviews. Whatever it is, you’ll pour even more into it than normal, having a full day to go deep and really get the creative juices flowing.
Secondly, you’ll have a yardstick to measure other days. You’ll have something to aim for. It’s not exactly easy, but it is possible to design a business where 3, 4, maybe even 4 and a half days of every week is full of doing only what you most enjoy.
Make your next Monday the perfect day. Make a note of how you feel at the end, and tell me on Twitter @MrAsquith.
