The rejection stings. It leaves a mark. Yet this is exactly what the church has been saying to far too many people for far too long: "You're not welcome here. Find someplace else to sit." How can we extend unconditional welcome and acceptance in a world increasingly marked by bigotry, fear, and exclusion? Pastor John Pavlovitz invites listeners to join him on the journey to find or build a church that is big enough for everyone. He speaks clearly into the heart of the issues the Christian community has been earnestly wrestling with: LGBT inclusion, gender equality, racial tensions, and global concerns. A Bigger Table: Building Messy, Authentic, Hopeful Spiritual Community asks if organized Christianity can find a new way of faithfully continuing the work Jesus began 2,000 years ago, where everyone gets a seat. Pavlovitz shares moving personal stories and his careful observations as a pastor to set the table for a new, more loving conversation on these and other important matters of faith. He invites us to build the bigger table Jesus imagined, practicing radical hospitality, total authenticity, messy diversity, and agenda-free community. Members Reviews: Even An Atheist Likes It! Let me preface my review with this: I am not religious and left Christianity years ago, but was raised in a far right church and was apart of it for about 25 years. That being said, about 2 years ago, my father-in-law printed out a blog post of his called "My emancipation from American Christianity" and it resonated so much within me. I am not a Christian anymore, but if I were going to believe in God, this would be the God that I believe in. This is the type of faith I want others to have. If you're going to believe in God, let it be one that is big. The Christianity I was raised was in is far too narrow, and there were the "them" (the sinners, obliviously) and then there were "us." (the ones who heard from God and had the RIGHT interpretation!) Shouldn't God be one that is big enough to allow for everyone. Flaws, perfect, big, small, ugly and all? There should be room for everyone at that table. I love John's writing style and have been a frequenter of his blog for these last two years. I very much enjoy his authenticity, how he speaks openly and honestly about his journey of coming to "Build a Bigger Table". Regardless of where you fall in a spiritual journey, this is an excellent reminder that there is always room to build a bigger table. If you haven't checked out his blog, you should. John "gets it" and I am so grateful. I laughed and cried through every chapter. John "gets it." I'm the mother of an LGBTQ child and his wisdom and gentle heart have been a rock to hundreds of us "mama bears" so I am glad that the world now gets to partake in the same goodness that we have appreciated. Everyone needs to read this book. Gave as gift - have not yet had feedback, ... Gave as gift - have not yet had feedback, but I read his articles all the time and am impressed with his thinking. Who love and support our children I have read John's blog for the last 2 years he speaks the truth that people don't want to hear, but need to hear.
