Here’s the scene: it’s Monday morning & you are in a busy UC. It’s 9am and you already feel like you will never catch up because there are six patients waiting and three who have been roomed. And you are the only provider there until the afternoon.
The next patient is a guy with five days of coughing and a low-grade temperature by history. He says he was exposed to people coughing and sneezing six days ago. Easy. Assessment & Plan: sixty-something year-old man with bronchitis. Supportive treatment only and follow up with his PCP. NEXT!
You know where we are going with this. The importance of slowing down, taking your time, and thinking about each patient in front of you, even if you have ten more behind him on the assembly line outside. It is indescribably easier to say this than to do it; and you are crazy if you think you are getting any help finding an actual solution.
But you must try. Missing a critical diagnosis could be catastrophic for not only the patient, but your medical career as well.
Today’s show features an interview with Bob Blumm, PA-C, DFAAPA. Bob is a longtime surgical PA, medicolegal expert, and author of the book Surgery for the Physician Assistant, available on Amazon. He is also on the editorial board for Clinician1, the largest online community of PA’s and NP’s.
Bob eloquently takes us through a real case with some real-life potential for medicolegal calamity. In addition to some clinical pearls, he shares some insightful wisdom from his more than forty-year career as a surgical PA.
What is Bob’s ‘parachute of protection’ and how does it apply to covering your…associated career? For over twenty years, he’s been preaching about a good history & physical, solid treatment plan, and appropriate prescribing. It’s kept him out of trouble for nearly 50 years now, so there must be something to it. From neurologic nuances to abdominal abominations, this policy can be better than any insurance coverage on the market.
Whether you are a new clinician, have a few rounds under your belt, or are an experienced clinician, this episode is for you. Trust me when I say you do not want to miss this one.
