Hello everyone, this is 'Aprende Idiomas con el Servicio de Idiomas de la Universidad de Murcia', and in this podcast we will be talking about Antigua and Barbuda.
Hello, my name is Anitra and I was born on the small Caribbean island of Antigua. Antigua forms part of what is called a twin island nation, which means that there are two islands which make up one nation and which are both led by the same government. Antigua is one island and its sister island to the north-east is Barbuda. One of the first questions that anyone curious about Antigua may ask, especially if that person is from Europe, is 'Where is Antigua?' Antigua is a Leeward Island in the eastern Caribbean. It is 326 miles or 525 km south-east of Puerto Rico and roughly 1 hour away from it by plane, while the distance between Antigua and Cuba is 1394 miles or 2244 km. Antigua and Barbuda are generally represented on maps by small dots in the Caribbean Sea. Antigua is 281 km² and Barbuda is even smaller at 160.6 km². The population of the two islands is around 90,000 inhabitants, which is a far cry from the approximately 441,000 people that live in the city of Murcia. The capital of Antigua is St. John's and the average temperature ranges from 31 degrees C to 22 degrees C or roughly 87 degrees F to 72 degrees F, Fahrenheit being the temperature scale that is predominantly used in the country. There is only one official language spoken in Antigua, which is English, and the currency used is called the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. One Eastern Caribbean Dollar is equivalent to about 0.33 Euros and the currency is used in the seven member states and one associate member state of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, a group of islands that have formed a union similar to the European Union. United States dollars are also accepted in stores and businesses in the country; however, change is generally given in the local currency. Antigua is a democratic nation which holds elections every five years or less to vote for its government. The current governing party in 2019 is the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party whose leader, and head of the government, is Prime Minister Gaston Browne. The other major political party is the United Progressive Party. The national flag of Antigua and Barbuda was designed by the artist and sculptor Sir Reginald Samuel and was adopted in 1967. The flag consists of 2 red triangles, one on the left and one on the right, the red colour symbolising the energy of the people. The triangles form a V shape which represents victory. In the middle of the flag you will find a rising sun, which is the figure for the dawn of a new era. Below this is a stripe of blue and a stripe of white. Together, these 3 elements represent the sun, sea and sand which are prevalent in the nation. The background for the sun is filled with the colour black, which represents the African ancestry of many persons in the country. Antigua is a nation known for being in the heart of the Caribbean and it abounds with friendly people, lovely weather and good times.
