Fort Plain Museum Receives Battlefield Study Grant

The Fort Plain Museum announces it is the recipient of a 2018 American Battlefield Protection Program Grant. The $50,000 National Park Service grant will provide the needed money to conduct an official government approved study of the Stone Arabia Battlefield. “This was a small but important battle in the War for America’s Independence”, said Norm Bollen, Chairman of the Board at the Fort Plain Museum. It had been part of an overall plan to depopulate the Mohawk Valley and retain the land here for British Loyalists. The plan never fully developed because a stubborn group of the valley’s residents stayed and fought off the enemy invasion.
The purpose of the study said Bollen is to determine the course of events which took place in Stone Arabia on the morning of October 19, 1780. The main goal will be to establish the size and boundaries of the battlefield. The battle encompassed a much largerarea than most people think said Bollen. Most all of Stone Arabia was affected as farms and fields were destroyed by the enemy during the fighting. By establishing the “official” area of battle we will be able to clear the way for a future preservation plan. The Museum worked with the Stone Arabia Preservation Society assembling a StoneArabia Battlefield Committee of local historians and experts to provide the needed documentation for the grant application.
The grant also received the support of Congressman John Faso and County Administrator Matt Ossenfort. “We would like to especially thank Congressman Faso”, said Bollen for helping us bring this important project to fruition. “This is an important first step in honoring those who gave their lives defending American liberty.
Long Island Advocacy for State and Local History By Peter Feinman NYHB https://newyorkhistoryblog.org/2018/08/20/feinman-long-island-advocacy-for-state-and-local-history/ How should we advocate on behalf of state and local history? Perhaps instead of focusing at the state level, we should think more locally.
