La República de El Salvador se convirtió el pasado 7 de septiembre en el gran laboratorio mundial de las criptomonedas. Por decisión de su presidente, Nayib Bukele, el país adoptó el Bitcoin como moneda de curso legal junto al dólar estadounidense tras haberlo anunciado unos meses antes. En estos tres meses los salvadoreños, lejos de vivir una luna de miel con esta criptomoneda, han empezado a desconfiar de ella. Hay cierta opacidad en la compra de Bitcoins por parte del Estado y el delito de suplantación de identidad se ha vuelto relativamente común. Los salvadoreños no pueden conocer el uso que el Gobierno hace de los más de 200 millones de dólares en Bitcoin aprobados por la Asamblea Legislativa y cerca de un millar de personas han denunciado la suplantación de su identidad para el cobro de un bono de 30 dólares por el uso de la billetera digital denominada Chivo que el Gobierno adjudicó a los ciudadanos.
El resultado es que, tres meses después de que el Bitcoin entrase en circulación, la aceptación de esta moneda digital en el comercio informal es muy baja y son pocos los salvadoreños que la avalan. En una encuesta realizada a finales de noviembre por el Centro de Estudios Ciudadanos de la Universidad Francisco Gavidia, el 91,4% de los consultados se sigue decantando por el dólar. Del 9% no todos están a favor, el 3,7% ni sabe ni contesta y sólo el 4,9% apoyan decididamente la implantación del Bitcoin.
No es la primera vez que el Centro de Estudios Ciudadanos ausculta la opinión ciudadana sobre este tema. En el mes de julio los que se oponían abiertamente al Bitcoin eran muchos menos, sólo el 53,5% mientras que el 20% de los salvadoreños consideraban que adoptar el Bitcoin era una decisión acertada o muy acertada. Su apoyo, como vemos, era muy superior, aunque, eso sí, en aquel entonces aún no había entrado en vigor la medida y la mayor parte de los salvadoreños no sabían bien en qué consistía esto de las criptomonedas, a pesar de la intensa campaña de evangelización que Bukele hace a través de los medios de comunicación y las redes sociales.
El presidente sigue siendo muy popular entre los salvadoreños, en torno al 70% de los habitantes aprueban su gestión, pero esto del Bitcoin le está desgastando a gran velocidad ya que hace sólo unos meses su índice de aprobación rondaba el 85%. Quizá el experimento del Bitcoin tenga algo que ver en ello.
