#01 lumbung stories: Azhari Aiyub

Azhari Aiyub was born in 1981 in Banda Aceh in Sumatra. He was awarded first prize in the Ministry of Education and Culture’s short story writing competition in 2003, before receiving the Poets of All Nations’ Free Word Award in 2005. During a writer’s residency in Mexico he wrote Wall Polanco and Alien: A Little Adventure in Mexico, published in 2019. His short story collections Nutmeg Woman and The Garden of Delights & Other Tales have been translated into English, German and French. His last novel, The Bearded Turtle, won the Khatulistiwa Literary Award in 2018.

lumbung stories is a project coordinated by the publishing house consonni within the framework of documenta fifteen with the collaboration of 8 publishers. lumbung stories is a book, 8 editions, 7 languages. The Almadía publishing house from Mexico, to write about tequio, presents Yàsnaya Elena Aguilar, who uses Spanish. Txalaparta presents Uxue Alberdi, who writes in Basque, to imagine around the idea of auzolan. From Brazil Dublinense gives us Cristina Judar, writing in Portuguese about mutirão. Al-Mutawassit proposes Nesrine A Khoury, who writes in Arabic on naffir and fa-zaar. Cassava Republic Press presents Panashe Chigumadzi, writing in English about intergenerational and transhistorical struggle through ubuntu. About allmende, Hatje Cantz and documenta fifteen have Mithu Sanyal, who uses German. And about lumbung, Marjin Kiri presents the writer Azhari Ayub, whose language is Indonesian.
