Benjamin Clementine se crio con su abuela en uno de los barrios más duros de Londres. Aislado de todo, el chico pasaba las horas en la biblioteca de Edmonton entre libros nada populares entre los chicos de su edad. Tiempo después y cansado de esa vida sin demasiado futuro se marchó a París, a tocar en la calle hasta que un día le llegó la oportunidad. En 2015 comenzó a sonar el debut de Benjamin Clementine, un disco inclasificable que terminó llevándose el Mercury Prize a álbum del año. En 2015 se editaron discos fascinantes como el To Pimp a Butterfly de Kendrik Lamar, el debut de Courtney Barnett, el poderoso The Epic de Kamasi Washington o el regreso de Blur. Entre tanto disco interesante llamó la atención At Least for Now, el trabajo de un pianista inglés que se había hecho nombre en las calles de París y que tras su primera actuación televisiva impresionó a una leyenda como Paul McCartney.El primer disco de Clementine se puede etiquetar como jazz, pero en sus retorcidas canciones hay muchas más cosas, hay poesía hablada, aullidos, pero también melodías pegadizas que han acabado en populares series de televisión.
Benjamin irrumpió con fuerza con su primer disco, pero ha sabido moverse para no quedar atrapado en el circuito del jazz. El pianista ha conseguido acercarse un hueco propio y moverse por festivales de rock y calar entre públicos ajenos totalmente al jazz. Desde entonces, Clementine ha cimentado su carrera, pero esta semana hemos querido recordar junto a la periodista Jimena Marcos cómo fueron esos primeros pasos de este peculiar músico.
