Description of EP354: Metabolic Syndrome Meeting
Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.
Dr. Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist and CEO of the Healthy Heart Network, discusses key insights from a recent cardio metabolic health conference he attended. He covers topics like the similar cardiovascular disease risk for type 1 and type 2 diabetics, the benefits of newer diabetes medications like SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists beyond glucose control, the importance of managing conditions like fatty liver disease and PCOS to prevent cardiometabolic issues, and the links between metabolic health, inflammation, and cognitive decline. He emphasizes the interconnected nature of heart health, diabetes, fatty liver, and brain function, and encourages listeners to be proactive about monitoring and managing their cardiometabolic health through lifestyle, medication, and regular check-ups.
Takeaways:
The risk of cardiovascular disease is similar for type 1 and type 2 diabetics, contrary to the common belief that type 2 diabetics have higher risk.
Newer diabetes medications like SGLT-2 inhibitors (e.g. empagliflozin) and GLP-1 agonists (e.g. semaglutide/Ozempic) have been shown to reduce cardiovascular events, beyond their effects on glucose control and weight.
These newer diabetes medications carry small but real risks like diabetic ketoacidosis and Fournier's gangrene that prescribers should be aware of.
There are several new weight loss medications available in Australia, including Saxenda, Contrave, Ozempic, and Mounjaro.
The GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide have receptors throughout the body and appear to have benefits beyond just glucose and weight, including reducing cardiovascular risk.
Polycystic ovary syndrome is closely linked to cardiometabolic risk factors and early use of metformin may be beneficial.
Imaging techniques like CT and PET scans can detect inflammation in blood vessels and around arteries, which is linked to increased future cardiovascular risk.
Even "metabolically healthy" overweight individuals have a high risk of developing diabetes within 10-15 years.
Fatty liver disease is very common, even in non-obese individuals, and is an early indicator of cardiometabolic disease risk.
The cardiometabolic syndrome impacts the whole body, including the brain, and medications like metformin, SGLT-2 inhibitors, and GLP-1 agonists may help reduce the risk of dementia.
Australia, like the rest of the western world, has a heart problem.

Every 10 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart attack. And 21 lives are lost daily because of it.
The devastating fact in all of this is…
Almost every one of those cases could have been prevented.
