Make no mistake, tipping is directly related to corruption. It's an awful habit that drives all of the wrong behaviors in staff and employers. In high end restaurants it is customary to leave up to 10% in Peru, but at all other establishments, it is just what ever rounds out the bill, or nothing. By promoting tipping, you are not a better person. You're promoting tax evasion and destroying the great low key service that we enjoy in Peru. If you want service like Pizza Alley, then go down Pizza Alley and leave the rest for the soft sell service with a smile.

What you pay in total measures your level of overall satisfaction with the restaurant or establishment; what you leave in tips measures your satisfaction with the waiter's services. In Peru, waiters probably make minimum wage, which is insignificant in light of the cost of living. Therefore, I try to tip according to the quality of the foods and beverages I consume and according to my wish to reward the waiter or not. I usually I tip 25% and declining for bills from 10 soles to 50 soles, and 10% for bills over 50 soles. However, if the foods or beverages consumed are clearly unacceptable I won't leave much of a tip even if the waiter's services are above par as this usually is the only way to provide eventual feedback to the owner.
