In language development, whether it is learning a first or foreign language, a novel utterance is defined as the first time the learner generates something that they have not been taught. If you are a parent, you remember your delight as your child began forming words, then sentences. You laughed as they experimented, making errors, but corrected them, shaping their development. It was a safe place for the child to discover and create. Learning to create original thoughts and express them in a new language is an enormous step forward in the developmental learning process. This episode of 5 Trainers in a Car looks at the parallels of the novel utterance and the learning that occurs in our training courses. Here’s who was along for the ride: Daniel Gray | Prime Lending Delia Smola | Global T&D specialist | @deliadelia Frank Thomsig | Director, Learning Design & Development, On Course Learning | @fcthomsig | fcthomsig@gmail.com Matt Pierce | @piercemr | piercemr@gmail.com Phylise Banner | LX designer | @phylisebanner | pbanner@gmail.com The Ah-Ha Moments Our trainers included a foreign language teacher (Frank), a childhood English language learner (Delia), and a conceptual ponderer (Phylise), who brought up the topic of novel utterances, which she learned about from Frank. Sharing from personal experience, Delia spoke about the delight of discovery as a child learning to speak English, and the empowerment she felt as the world opened up to her as she could communicate. It was a huge ah-ha moment for her, that generated more motivation to learn. What about in your classroom, whether ILT, VILT or elearning? Do your learners have those ah-ha moments? Are they given a chance to experiment and try new things? Do you remember your joy as a facilitator, seeing learners light up in moments of discovery or one reviewing evals, hearing about learner delight? We want to create these break through moments. There are some keys to that kind success, all applicable to our training environments. Keys to Success The first key is safety. Learners need to feel like it is ok to make mistakes. It has to be ok if things don’t come out perfectly the first time. When we are learning, we make mistakes, and in those mistakes is discovery and shaping of new thinking and behavior. The second key is engagement. Have we created compelling lessons, targeted to our learners, designed in ways that they like to learn? We have to connect with them before we can connect the dots of our content. The third key is the desire to learn more. In our classes, we can’t possibly teach every single thing that a learner needs about a topic. As instructional designers, we regularly trim the content to simplify things to the basics. If we do our job well, our learners will want to take things to the next level and continue to learn more. Today’s 5TrainersInACar episode comes to you from Dublin, Ohio (just outside of Columbus). We recorded this directly after “Learning Technology Day” a local ATD Chapter event featuring Debbie Richards & Sam Rogers (2 of the 5 Trainers for the episode). Also in the car is that event’s producer Terri LoGidice, Joe Suarez (who presented a great case study), and the all-important driver Cara North (whose driving skills are put to the test as she narrowly averts a near-collision in the parking lot!). Each of us are active trainers and developers of content for workplace learning. This episode we talk about making connections and how to get others involved in our training and this podcast. Take a listen to the episode and let us know – how do you get others involved? When #5trainersinacar started, it wasn’t a planned, or a fully thought out endeavor. We didn’t sit around planning on a bunch of goals and milestones. No one said, hey here’s our mission statement or our rules of operation. It all just happened. Then when DevLearn happened, we said, we should do this. We just did it. This is a great case of us working out loud. We only had three people, but we had a car and desire. So we went, and we recorded it. I held off on publishing because I wanted to make sure that the other episodes from DevLearn made it out the door first. And then there were more episodes, and I still have two episodes from Training 2017 to edit and publish. But this is a worthwhile effort. We all have projects that we want to get others involved in or need them involved. How do you do that? Episode 7: LMS, SME, and EDU. Oh my! Guest Author Katie Stroud What do five trainers in a car, Christmas shopping, and downtown Seattle have in common? An old man in a wheelchair who is still alive and unharmed no thanks to the insanity of pre-Christmas traffic in a big city! Welcome to the next #5trainersinacar episode. In this Episode In this episode, we discuss the hassles of LMS, finding the right SMEs, and how our education prepared us for our role in this professional space. We all know the pain of finding and using an LMS that can do everything we need it to do. Lisa and Victoria share their struggles in switching from one LMS to another, and Brian discusses the idea of scraping the LMS altogether. We all chimed in to suggest that training professionals build the next and last LMS you’ll ever need until Brian brings us back to Earth with the reality that it can’t be that easy to do. Subject matter experts (SMEs) are valuable to instructional designers, but what if you’re assigned one that doesn’t know the subject matter. Lisa discusses a SME mismatch that lead to missing details for a training session her team built. Brian discusses the importance of a SME with a passion for what he or she does. And Victoria chimes in with the need to make sure that the SME has time scheduled to work with the training team. Despite our best efforts, timelines, SME mismatches, and clunky LMSs lead to less than ideal outcomes. Brian suggests that taking a more iterative approach can help us with quality, and his colleague, reminds us to follow-up with a post-mortem to help us discover what works and what doesn’t. As far as education goes some of us don’t use much of what we learned in college to do the work we do now, but Brian found his courses on Organizational Psychology helped a lot. I highlighted the need for us to grow by leveraging our relationships with others and how communications classes helped the most with that. Aside from that, did you know that Lake Washington High School has a kangaroo for a mascot? Suggested as the only school in the US with a kangaroo mascot, I found that there are at least seven schools in the US today that sport the hoppy Kangaroo spirit. Brian was the mascot for his alma mater and took an interest in finding the mascot for a school using his last name: Washburn. And we didn’t. As I maneuvered through all the one-way streets FULL of pedestrians to pick up our trainers, I managed to pull a little too far into the crosswalk at 4th and Pike at a red light. Once we got everyone safely in the car, we drove to a neighborhood where I used to live so that we could get out of the busy streets of downtown. Anyone can record a #5trainersinacar episode, but consider safer traffic options such as a quieter time of day and a quieter neighborhood or country road not likely to be full of people and busy traffic. We’re back with another episode. Maureen Orey sent this one in for us. Maureen is an author, speaker, coach, and President of Workplace Learning & Performance Group. She also happens to be a founding member of 5 Trainers in a Car. In this episode, she recorded with several individuals as they were leaving a training certificate program. And here’s the cool thing — she just went ahead and recorded the episode. They had only 4 people in the car and made it work (Siri gets a few lines). She provide us here at 5 Trainers in a Car with the audio, and we helped clean up the audio, added the bumpers, and boom – another episode for you. And here’s the thing, you can do it too. Get your workmates together, record an episode. Going to a conference, record an episode. Get some trainer, instructional designer, L&D people together, and make your episode. You pick a topic and record. It’s easy peasy. And it can be a short one, a long one, or something that’s just right. Maureen’s is 5 1/2 minutes. They folks in the episode express some of their thoughts about micro-learning. This episode is a bit noisy. The danger of doing a podcast in a car is a lot of noise. We’re back with another DevLearn  inspired episode. One of the noticeable features of the Las Vegas strip is lots bright lights and lots of screens. It’s a land grab for attention, in a completely over whelming way – not what we want from our learning probably. However, it made for an interesting backdrop as we got four trainers in a car. This episode is focused video in L&D, some of the challenges the field is facing. We’re hearing a lot more about about video, how it’s being used, and probably some of the mistakes and issues being made. We had good conversation about video, but there’s a lot more conversation that’s needed. We were at DevLearn for this episode, driving around the Las Vegas strip. Even in such a flashy environment, there’s room for deep questions and conversation.
