Thing #3 I’m Teaching My Kids: The World Is Governed by Absolute Truths

Episode in A Dad's Guide
https://www.adadsguide.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/A-Dads-Guide-Thing3-Im-Teaching-My-Kids-The-World-Is-Governed-by-Absolute-Truths.mp3   *Podcast episode* It is often said that we live in a post-truth world where absolute truth does not exist and that facts don’t matter. Saying that everything is relative—and that there is no absolute truth—is an easy way out. That way anyone can defend any argument without backing it up with reality. However, there are clearly absolute truths in the world and in our shared human experience. There are absolute truths in every sphere of the human experience, including the moral, physical, emotional, spiritual, political, and scientific.  Belief in absolute, objective truth is the foundation to forthrightly interacting with the world and finding a path to a good life.

Thing #2 I’m Teaching My Kids: Meaning and Purpose Sustains You, Not “Happiness”

Episode in A Dad's Guide
https://www.adadsguide.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/A-Dads-Guide-Thing2-I’m-Teaching-My-Kids-Meaning-and-Purpose-Sustains-You-Not-Happiness.mp3   *Podcast episode* The pursuit of happiness will always be incomplete. What every human being needs in order to attain fulfillment is not “happiness”–it’s purpose and meaning. By pursuing these, you’re opening yourself to fulfillment not some distant day in the future, but each and every day. Here’s the full article that complements this episode.

Thing #1 I’m Teaching My Kids: Life isn’t about balance. Life is about feeding all the wolves you need to feed

Episode in A Dad's Guide
https://www.adadsguide.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/A-Dads-Guide-Thing1-I’m-Teaching-My-Kids-Life-isn’t-about-balance-Life-is-about-feeding-all-the-wolves-you-need-to-feed.mp3   “Life is all about balance”. Everyone has heard that one before. This is actually an incorrect way to live. If life were all about balance, then if you have low levels of everything in perfect balance then you would be happy, fulfilled, and life would be great. This is obviously untrue. Also, if life were all about balance, this precludes the opportunity to pursue excellence. This is obviously undesirable. As we know, humans who are impoverished in every way (but perfectly balanced!) are perfectly miserable. Humans who are mediocre in every way (but perfectly balanced!) are also miserable. Here’s a more accurate description of how to live: Life is about feeding all of the wolves that you need to feed. Click here for the blog post for this podcast episode.

My New Project: 50 Things I’m Teaching My Kids

Episode in A Dad's Guide
https://www.adadsguide.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/A-Dads-Guide-My-New-Project-50-Things-Im-Teaching-My-Kids.mp3   I have been thinking a lot lately about what sort of lessons and values to teach my kids. I know that kids need to learn how to deal with the hardships and complexities of life. I know that my little girls will go out into the world with a barrage of ideas and ideologies impinging upon them at every turn. I believe that what my kids will learn from school, the workplace, and everyday life will be at best incomplete; at worst, wrong and misleading. I do not want to leave anything to chance with regard to what my kids need to learn to tackle the challenges of life. Thus I’ve been thinking long and hard about what lessons and values I want to teach my kids so that they can live happily and meaningfully. So, I’ll be working on something over the next year or so. I will be releasing a blog post, a video, and a podcast episode approximately once a week dealing with a lesson or a value that I will be teaching my young children. This series is called “50 Things I’m Teaching My Kids”. These are the lessons and values that I wish I was taught at a young age. Lessons and values that I want to pass on to my own kids so that they have an advantage in life.
