Episode 3: Philosophy as a way of life with Matthew Sharpe

In the third episode of 'A Troublesome Thought' your hosts Dale and Marilyn talk philosophy and other stuff with Associate Professor in Philosophy at Deakin University Matthew Sharpe. After Dale’s ‘Today in the history of philosophy’ segment falls flat, we talk Philosophy as a way of life (including a brief mention of public masturbation, of course, Greeks you know…) Matt leads us through differing conceptions of philosophy as a way of life, from the more modern notion to the difference between the kind of philosophical exegesis we would recognise today and the practice of philosophy as a search for the right way to live. This latter conception is very much influenced by Matt’s work on Pierre Hadot. As well as Matt’s philosophical writings, he also contributes to Cogito on The Conversation. Episode 2: Public Philosophy and Personal Identity with Dr. Patrick Stokes

In the second episode of 'A Troublesome Thought' your hosts Dale and Marilyn talk philosophy and other stuff with Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Deakin University Patrick Stokes.   We discuss the role of philosophy in public discourse, including Patrick's work on why philosophy matters, the arguments for and against marriage equality, and how Facebook plays a role in the remembrance of the dead.   Pat explains how he is still grappling with the questions of his childhood through his work on personal identity, exploring the relationship between first and third person identity. Patrick's book The Naked Self highlights this debate in light of the philosophy of Kierkegaard.   As always, you can find more information about your hosts here: http://unimelb.academia.edu/MarilynStendera http://deakin.academia.edu/DaleClisby Thanks to pidgin.net.au for hosting the show.
