Such Sights To Show: Episode 27 - Underworld / Transmutations (1985)
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Bryan and Joe check out Clive Barker's first screenplay, Underworld aka Transmutations (1985).
This George Pavlou (Rawhead Rex) film was plagued by producer interference, so much so that Barker has notoriously disowned it. For good reason! It's boring, has a soap opera aesthetic, and features an icky romance between Nicole (18 year old Nicola Cowper) and Roy Bain (38 year old Larry Lamb).
Plus: kernels of Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions, early Miranda Richardson, and a confounding ending

White Ladies in Crisis: The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window Part 1
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Jenn, Gena and Joe return to discuss the first four episodes of Kirsten Bell's half serious, half parody Netflix series, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window.
Up for discussion: Bell as MVP, the show's best joke(s), messy women as jokes, comparisons to Police Academy and The Naked Gun and whether this would have been better served as a film.

Sexy & Surreal: Episode 23 - The Straight Story (1999)
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Terry and Joe close out the David Lynch side of S03 with a very unorthodox text: 1999's The Straight Story.
Or maybe it just seems odd. Upon closer inspection, there are clear Lynchian elements; they're just lurking under the surface!
Plus: an Oscar-nominated performance by Richard Farnsworth, hitting deer on the highway, and an out of control lawnmower action sequence.

Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
We’re getting into some foreign horror for this episode and heading The Orphanage, the 2007 film directed by J.A. Bayona. We have disabled characters, some light touching of tropes of that we (thankfully) move away from and gut-punch of an ending.

Such Sights To Show: Episode 26 - Clive Barker's Nightbreed Vol. 1-3
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Bryan and Joe reach the end of the Nightbreed road with Clive Barker's Nightbreed Volumes 1-3, a comic series by writer Marc Andreyko with art by Piotr Kowalski, Emmanuel Xerx Javier and Devmalya Pramanik.
Up for discussion: the pros and cons of standalone stories, a punishing backstory for Boone (C/W: everything), canonical debates about Ashberry: Serial Killer, and confusion about the series' end.

Sexy & Surreal: Episode 22 - Crash (1996)
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
It's finally time: we've reached Joe's favourite Cronenberg film, 1996's Crash.
Expect lots of gushing from Joe, but what does first time viewer Terry think of the controversial film adaptation of J.G. Ballard's novel?
Plus: is this sexy, clinical or both? Why is Elias Koteas so hot? Is the gay sex adequate? And where is Holly Hunter?

Bodies of Horror: Episode 72 - Crimes of the Future (2022) feat. Gena Radcliffe
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
After a brief venture into crime thrillers, David Cronenberg made a return to the body horror subgenre with 2022’s Crimes of the Future. He brought along his current go-to actor, Viggo Mortensen, to tell the story of an aging performance artist whose partner…uses an eXistenZ style device to cut out the extra organs he grows regularly. As one does on a Tuesday evening.
I am joined by the incredibly funny and thoughtful Gena Radcliffe (from Kill by Kill Podcast and AOAS’s very own White Ladies in Crisis) to go deep into this film’s message about aging, illness and disease, disability, and evolution.

White Ladies in Crisis: The Girl On The Train (2016)
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Our journey into the realm of hot, messy women embroiled in murder mysteries continues with Tate Taylor's adaptation of Paula Hawkins' The Girl On The Train.
Much like The Woman in the Window, the film stars an A-list actress (here it's Emily Blunt) doing great work in a lukewarm thriller.
Plus: female archetypes, too complicated plotting, our desire for a miniseries, and comparisons to male-centric "prestige" pictures like Oppenheimer

Sexy & Surreal: Episode 21 - Lost Highway (1997)
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Terry and Joe finally hit one of former's most anticipated titles on the pod: David Lynch's surreal 1997 masterpiece, Lost Highway.
This mind fuck of a film noir has true crime connections in Robert Blake, dual roles for Patricia Arquette, but makes the mistake of subbing out Bill Pullman for Balthazar Getty? Oof!
Plus: impossible Hollywood houses, nightmare imagery, and wild speculations.

Such Sights To Show: Episode 25 - Clive Barker's Nightbreed Archive
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Bryan and Joe return for the first of two episodes on Nightbreed comics. The first is a 400 page comic omnibus principally written by D.G. Chichester, including an adaptation of the Director's Cut of the film, the X-Men-esque "Blasphemers" arc, and (unbeknownst to us) a Nightbreed/Hellraiser cross-over!
Plus: a rotating roster of artists, our favorite Blasphemer characters, and the Archive's casual (1990s) misogyny

Bodies of Horror: Episode 71 - Night Swim (2024)
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Disabled folks who have by default a non-existent to low quality of life? Check. Disabled characters being a burden to loved ones? Check. Magical cures? Check.
2024’s Night Swim is a layer cake of the disability tropes we know and love, and I thought I would channel some of the simmering rage this film insured to give a refresher on some of these tropes (since we circle them frequently here on the pod).

Sexy & Surreal: Episode 20 - M. Butterfly (1993)
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Terry and Joe tackle another challenging Cronenberg title with the adaptation of David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly (1993).
Is this the straightest queer film ever? Although Jeremy Irons and John Lone are both doing great work, the film's reticence to engage with its gender, queer, and even political themes frustrates us to no end. By playing this realist and straight (in all senses of the word), the film is a bad marriage of director and material.

White Ladies in Crisis: The Woman In The Window (2021)
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
The White Ladies in Crisis crew get back to basics with the first of three episodes dedicated to hot, alcoholic, messy, voyeuristic women embroiled in murder mysteries.
Entry 1 is Joe Wright's long delayed adaptation of The Woman in the Window, which finds Amy Adams in unflattering pyjamas and the largest NY apartment we've ever seen, spying on Julianne Moore (or is it Jennifer Jason Leigh?) getting murdered.
Plus: grown-ass men playing boys, twists on twists on twists, a Single White Female sequel, and why Jenn cried twice.

Bodies of Horror: Episode 70 - Se7en (1995) w/ Hannah Oglivie
Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Disability representation in media doesn’t exist in a vacuum because disability is something that can impact anyone at anytime – meaning it is so important to touch on the intersectional points of representation.
Nichole is joined in a discussion of the landmark, but complicated, film Se7en by Hannah Oglivie, host of Fats on Film, a podcast that discusses the representation of plus-sized bodies across all genres of television and film.
We touch on so much in our discussion of Se7en:
> there are some arguably terrible individuals associated with this movie now but wanted to still have this conversation in the hopes that there is a benefit of sharing our thoughts
> how media depictions of disability, weight, gender and sexuality begin to inform our associations and identity from a young age
> how disability and weight are linked to the “religious morality” framework of the Seven Deadly Sins

Episode in
Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad
Joe and Terry return to Twin Peaks to discuss David Lynch's sensational (and incredibly upsetting) prequel film, Fire Walk With Me (1992). C/W: Sexual Assault
How does Terry fare with the cacophony of new characters? How do we feel about the recast actors? And how freaking great is Sheryl Lee in a film that makes the actress go there?
