After a brief venture into crime thrillers, David Cronenberg made a return to the body horror subgenre with 2022’s Crimes of the Future. He brought along his current go-to actor, Viggo Mortensen, to tell the story of an aging performance artist whose partner…uses an eXistenZ style device to cut out the extra organs he grows regularly. Terry and Joe tackle another challenging Cronenberg title with the adaptation of David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly (1993). Is this the straightest queer film ever? Although Jeremy Irons and John Lone are both doing great work, the film's reticence to engage with its gender, queer, and even political themes frustrates us to no end. By playing this realist and straight (in all senses of the word), the film is a bad marriage of director and material. Disability representation in media doesn’t exist in a vacuum because disability is something that can impact anyone at anytime – meaning it is so important to touch on the intersectional points of representation. Nichole is joined in a discussion of the landmark, but complicated, film Se7en by Hannah Oglivie, host of Fats on Film, a podcast that discusses the representation of plus-sized bodies across all genres of television and film.
