Today we are lucky to have Catherine Orer on the podcast. She is business and PR specialist focusing on artists and art business owners. She's a fellow Canadian living and working in Quebec. After studying marketing and working in the corporate world Catherine turned her talents in a more creative and interesting direction by studying the business of art at Christies in Paris, and then back in Canada, working for galleries, international art fairs and eventually opening her current business the Artist Entrepreneur to help artists directly. She's not an artist herself but she brings the best of her pragmatic business mindset and marketing expertise to help artists improve and grow their businesses. Today I bring you illustrator and picture book maker Marc Martin all the way from Melbourne Australia. I talked to Marc about starting out as a designer and all the different things he tried in his quest to find work he loved. He shares how he transitioned into illustration, how he got into making picture books, how he got his first publisher, and how he challenges himself to keep improving. Todays episode is the second half of a long interview all about personal finance for artists. I'm talking to Mati Rose McDonough and Christina Empedocles, creators of Money Bootcamp for Artists and Creatives about why personal finance for artists is so important and how to get a handle on your own financial situation. Mati and Christina are both artists. On top of that Mati's artist business involves teaching online art classes, a creative business class and running artist retreats. Christina is well on her way to becoming a certified financial planner and channeled her interest in business and personal finance for artists into her blog/business Sm-artly. Carole Epp is a ceramicist living and working in Saskatoon in Canada. After Finishing her masters in Australia she had to find clever ways to maintain access to the kilns and other equipment she needed to continue her artistic practice but she made it work. This one's a solo episode, so it's just me here today on the Art Pro Podcast. Today i’m interviewing Alex Beriault who is a performance and installation artist. I was really keen to interview her because I can only imagine that an art practice centered on performance and installation art would be one of the most difficult to maintain. After all it may be the least commercial form of art. I was lucky that Alex actually lives nearby so we were able to meet up in person. She shared her great tip for finding places to show her art and other opportunities. Dina Brodsky is a painter living and working in New York city. She makes beautiful and highly detailed miniatures 8” square all the way down to 2” square. Michael Peterson is from Saskatoon here in Canada, where he runs his own gallery, the only printmaking studio in the city, and a radio show about art and artists. He is also on the boards of many art organizations including Saskatoon's Nuit Blanche. And he recently spearheaded a provincially funded professional development program for artists. Michael Peterson studied printmaking and initially started organizing art initiatives in order to fill his own needs and those of his peers. Starting businesses, organizations, and initiatives has mainly taken over at this point and we talk about many of his projects. We talk about the importance of building up your fellow artists and your art community. Today I bring you an interview with Kelli Maeshiro. When I heard Kelli had moved to the Philippines to try to make art full time, I knew it was a story I would want to share with you. She saved up some money and gave herself two years to try to make a living from her art in Manila. Since moving to Manila she’s already found a market for her paintings, and sold out her first solo show before it even officially opened. In this interview I ask her how and why she moved to a country she’d never even been to in order to work full time on art. She shares tips on integrating into a new art scene, working with galleries, and running your studio and business, including the many uses of spreadsheets for artists! Love it! This episode is an interview with Bianca Bello of Wild Humm. In the past year, Bianca Bello finished her masters in chemistry and quit her day job at starbucks. Now she makes her living full time from her art. She made art on the side through school and built up an Instagram following of 40,000 people. She sells her colourful abstract paintings almost exclusively through her own website shop. I got to ask Bianca Bello about how she started out, how she grew her instagram following, how she was able to go right into full time art after studying chemistry, and how she set up her website and online shop. Leah Davies is a pet portrait painter living and working in Boston Massachusetts in the U.S. She built up her portrait business to the point where she could take the leap to quit her day job in january 2014. While she says she still doesn’t quite match what she made at her day job, she doubled her income from art that year, again in 2015, and she’s on track to do it again this year. Leah is a self taught painter and marketer and I could tell she’s given a lot of thought to what it takes to be an artist entrepreneur. I got to ask leah about what she carried into painting from her printmaking undergrad, how she made the leap to making art full time, how she finds her customers and how she keeps them so happy!

For this episode I got to interview Adam Lee an Australian painter living and working outside of Melbourne. I got to ask him about the 12 years he spent developing his interesting and nuanced style and his PhD in philosophy through art. We talked about about persevering through the early times when you’re broke overworked and unknown, and about the importance of having a deeper meaning and purpose for making art. I also got to ask him about how he got gallery representation on 3 continents and started having Adam also shared his thoughts on treating your studio time like a regular job and how to determine if a gallery is a good fit. In this episode I interview artists Kyle Topping and Chrissy Poitras of Picton Ontario about their art practice and about how they started their business Spark Box Studio. Spark Box Studio offers a fully equipped print making studio where artists can rent time on the equipment or attend workshops. They also offer a residency program to allow artists in a variety of mediums the time and space to devote themselves to creative output. They offer regular residency awards to select some artists to come free of cost. In the interview Kyle and Chrissy share how they came up with the idea and got it started and how they made it profitable while building up an arts community. Kyle does his personal work in print and Chrissy is a painter and printmaker. They shared how they finally got back to showing and selling the work that feels true to them after years of churning out work they thought people wanted.
