Alan Smith joins the podcast today, as he gives us a preview of a groundbreaking product for the pool industry,, specifically pool plastering and beyond, with host Randy Beard. MICROGLASS SYSTEMS A Plaster Preservation and Renewal System The Microglass System is designed for both new and old pool finishes. New Pools When applied to new pool finishes, the plaster must be finished to the desired look and exposure, if being acid washed. The surface shall be dry or damp to the touch. The material is applied by low pressure spray and then backrolled. Generally the rate of application is 200 square feet per gallon in two coats. Its allowed to dry to the touch and can be filled after 4 hour cure. Existing Pools The surfaces of the existing pool are generally acid washed and then neutralized and pressure washed. Any minor repairs need to be done prior to application. The application rate and application procedures are the same for both new and old pool plaster or pebble surfaces. Microglass Stops Chemical Exchange Between Pool Plaster and The Pool Water Chemical balancing and stabilization is much simpler and constant when the Microglass is applied as specified. Microglass forms a glass like layer around the cement paste or binder around the aggregate, quartz or pebble finish. Stops Dusting and Staining The Microglass chemistry resists staining from adhesion of iron or other contaminants on treated Microglass surfaces. On this episode, Randy Beard chats with Eric Herman of WaterShapes. WaterShapes is an all-digital publication focused on the design, engineering, and construction of recreational and decorative bodies of water. It was launched in 1999 as a business to business print magazine with the goal of defining a new industry, the “watershaping industry” an amalgam of professionals who imagine and create pools, spas,  fountains, ponds, streams, waterfalls, lazy rivers, zen gardens and so on.  Eric discusses the new look of the website, some new features and what they’re up to this year.

What responsibility do builders have in making sure pool drain covers have been replaced since they installed them? Technical Director, Dewey Case, from the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code (CMAHC) provides tips on when you should replace your pool drain covers and how to manage documentation and replacements moving forward. Many covers have most likely not been replaced since installation after the VGB act was implemented. This pool construction deep dive is a 2020 Pinnacle Award winning pool by collaborators Drakeley Pool Company and Red Rock Pools and Spas. It has a perimeter overflow of the most demanding configuration. It features some negative edge-concrete, negative edge-acrylic, and a flooded coping at the deck side. It has a large corner acrylic wall, an in floor cover system, extensive glass tile work, perimeter overflow spa, and floating step details. This unique pool concept was developed by Dick Clark & Associates Architects with a unique interaction with the surrounding house that was built by Jon Luce Builder. Design Ecology developed the details and mechanicals and managed the pool and surrounding landscape construction to complete the project. The house creates a cool shaded cove on the pool that is 10 feet above ground on a concrete footer. It has a 45-foot linear vanishing edge with a unique limestone coping that was cut through a vein of fossilized shell limestone. We are doing another one of our deep dive multi segment breakdowns of a pool construction project. In Part 2 one of Dave pet projects we’ve got a typical pool, but it’s got a awesome automatic retractable cover system on it. And then we actually have a more even cooler spot that has a mobile phone system in it. And then add to the technicality of the whole project as over the top of the equipment room and the storage tanks underneath. So it’s quite a technical challenge for the project. So I want to introduce URB that’s on the call. I’ve got Tom Dinkle . He’s going to be able to speak to us and cover some of the stuff on the covers. I’ve got Jim Farell , and we’re going to he’s going to go through what we did on the spa. We can obviously do this on just about any scale. We worked with Jim on a number of projects. So from large pools to small spores and any kind of in between.
