The Best Audio Mash-Ups and Parodies of All Time

Listen to the Episode Below (00:14:35) Download iTunes Stitcher SoundCloud Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player Best Audio Mash-Ups and Parodies of All Time In this podcast, we thought of a fun episode to go with the holiday season, and featured audio producers – from all over the world – who created some of the best audio mash-ups and parodies. These mash-ups and parodies are clips of TV shows, current events, news and affairs, and other topics, that have been remixed using either auto tune, loop rapping or beat mixing to create the final audio. Let’s go over the “5 Best Audio Mash-ups and Parodies of All Time”. Katie Hopkins and the Fat Kids (Mash-Up) This is taken by the hosts of This Morning, a TV show in the UK, while discussing that kids are getting too fat and how it is the parents’ fault. The guests are quite opinionated and the audio is basically them talking about the subject in the form of a mash-up. Cassetteboy – Cameron’s Conference Rap Cassetteboy is a well-known mash-up artist in the UK, whose YouTube videos have millions of views. One of the most popular videos that Cassetteboy made this year was Cameron’s Conference Rap. David Cameron is the Prime Minister of the UK, and he recently had the annual conference for the Conservative Party (back in October). This audio is not only entertaining, but it’s also quite relevant and reflects the current state of politics in the UK! If you watch this online, beware, because it contains some swearing which we did not include in the podcast. Sweet Brown – Original Report and Autotune Remix.mp4 This next audio – currently with 54 million views on YouTube – makes good use of auto tune from an interview with a woman, Sweet Brown, which was made into a rap song. This just goes to show that you don’t really need to get someone into a studio and behind the microphone. If you are a talented audio producer, you can take even a simple interview, any clip, make it a song, and turn someone into a singer – just like that! TIK TOK KESHA Parody: Glitter Puke – Key of Awe$ome The Key of Awesome crew is one of my favourite YouTubers and general audio parody creators, and the TiK ToK Kesha parody is one of their most popular creations! They do remixes of popular songs by taking them, changing the lyrics up, and getting the singers to sing new lyrics! They also make videos and they’ve done “Gangnam Style”, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”, and other popular songs. Songify This – Obama Sings to the Shawties (replay extended) Obama sings to the shawties (replay extended) is the most popular Obama mash-up I could find, which was made by Songify This. This one’s very current and appropriate for the US audience, while it also shows you what a good audio producer can do with a bit of audio, cutting and an audio clip. Will Smith Miami Power Intro for Beach Grooves Radio by MRC We also have videos which are comparable to these creative videos, and Will Smith’s “Miami Power Intro” is an example of that! You can check out our power intros at: mrc.fm/powerintros. Call To Action If you have attempted to do something like this, or you have another parody or mash-up that you really like, go ahead and post the links in the comments so that we can check them out and maybe feature or tweet them! Outdoor Audio Recording Techniques

Listen to the Episode Below (00:12:12) Download iTunes Stitcher SoundCloud Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player Outdoor Audio Recording Techniques In this podcast, we talked about how audio producers can make outside audio sound as best as it can, including recommended equipment and techniques on achieving that studio quality sound, even when outdoors! Replacing the Audio With Adobe Audition A great new feature, which you can use in Adobe Audition CS6, allows you to analyse your recorded audio, and if you record another audio which is similar to it, you can actually replace the first audio! Roland R-05 The Roland R-05 is a stereo condenser portable recorder that you can put on top of your camera (in my case the Canon 60D) to record your video. It is sensitive to surrounding noise, so if you want to pick up the little sounds of the twittering birds and breeze, together with your voice, this recorder is actually a good bet. They sell for about 160 pounds on Amazon. Speedlink Spes Clip-On Microphone The Speedlink Spes Clip-On Microphone is a fantastic budget mic to use on location. There’s a huge difference between using a stereo condenser portable recorder and a lavalier mic; I actually made a video about this, where you can see their comparison! It’s also very cheap, as the lowest I’ve found it on an Amazon flash sale was just about 5 pounds. Tip for this microphone: you can put it under your shirt to block wind or rain sounds, while still picking up great audio! RØDE SMARTLAV Lavalier Microphone For Smartphones If you don’t want to get a full recorder, but instead want to use your phone for recording, you can get the RØDE SMARTLAV Lavalier Microphone For Smartphones, which works for both iOS and Android! It has a specific application that you can use for recording, so you just plug it in your phone and you can start recording a video or even your podcast! It also has 3 rings at the end of its jack, so it might be good for your phone but it might not necessarily plug into your other devices like the Roland R-05. It costs more or less around 45 pounds, depending on Amazon or your local retailer. Shotgun Microphones What most pros use when they record on location are the shotgun microphones! A lot of voice-over actors use them in their studios, so they’re really of good quality. RODE NTG2 SHORT SHOTGUN MICROPHONE RODE NTG2 SHORT SHOTGUN MICROPHONE is one of the best microphones I could find, which goes for around 140 pounds. This is also a shotgun microphone, and is not only good for use in studios, but also very good for camcorder video stuff. RØDE Deadcat Furry Windshield Microphone If you want to do what the TV people do and make it all furry, you need to get the RØDE Deadcat Furry Windshield Microphone for about 20 pounds. It protects the audio from the wind, rain and such sounds! Do you record regularly on location as part of your audio production? What works for you? Let us know in the comments of this podcast! Replacing an Internal Sound Card

Listen to the Episode Below (00:08:53) Download iTunes Stitcher SoundCloud Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player   Replacing an Internal Sound Card All computers that you buy in a store come with basic sound cards, be they Macs or PCs. In this episode, we talked about replacing an internal sound card, because of a question that we got from one of our regular listeners, Matthew Butler. Here’s his question: Hi Mike I’m a regular listener to all of your podcasts – I really enjoy listening to them – keep up the great work!! Now you see I’m keen to buy a Focusrite Saffire PRO 14, but want to ask you some questions about it. Now I’m basically wondering if it is ideal for use with a mixer – and ultimately a replacement for my Internal sound card? I’m conscious that if I buy it, and then find out it isn’t what I want I’ll be a little disappointed!! And should it not be an idea replacement of a sound card, can you suggest anything which could ultimately replace it? My budget is under £200, and I’m using a Windows PC. Thank you Matthew Butler Focusrite Saffire PRO 14 Completely Replaces an Internal Sound Card The answer is yes! The Focusrite Saffire PRO 14 bypasses any kind of internal structure inside your computer; so whether you have a computer with or without an internal sound card, adding the Focusrite Saffire PRO 14 is going to completely overwrite that sound card. It also comes with more features than a sound card! We actually recorded this podcast using the same product, as I actually like Focusrite and have been vocal about it before. To a certain extent, it’s also the answer to a mixing desk, because you can control it just like a mini mixing desk! Alternative Audio Devices With a budget of £200, you can also get other great audio devices like Behringer, which is a German company that I also like. I would advise you to look around and try to find the best deals by checking out reviews and checking out past episodes of the Audio Production Podcast. In Episode 11, we actually talked about great audio interfaces and Focusrite! Fulfilled by Amazon Program You can also check out Amazon, because they now have this Fulfilled by Amazon Program, where you can deal directly with Amazon and compare lots of good products. Basically, when somebody sells a thing, they send it to Amazon and it will be Amazon who will fulfill the order. Most of the good audio equipment is also there. Plus, you get ratings and reviews! Audio Production Tutorials on YouTube

Listen to the Episode Below (00:09:00) Download iTunes Stitcher SoundCloud Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player In this episode, we tackle the most viewed videos on my YouTube channel, which currently has around 25,000 subscribers and 3.1 million views!   Best Effects for Radio Idents in Adobe Audition In this video, I share the best effects for radio idents and even go into detail on how to use these effects, such as flanger in the voice and a better chorus effect! [cbc_video id=”529″ volume=”30″ width=”880″ aspect_ratio=”16×9″ autoplay=”0″ controls=”1″]   Stutter Effect for Voice-Overs I show how easy it is to do the stutter effect for radio idents in Adobe Audition, and also share a few of my favourite stutter effects. [cbc_video id=”315″ volume=”30″ width=”880″ aspect_ratio=”16×9″ autoplay=”0″ controls=”0″]   Scary Voices Sound Effects I always see a spike in this video just before Halloween, usually around the end of October. In this video, I give a quick tutorial on Halloween-related audio such as ghost and demon voice effects! [cbc_video id=”545″ volume=”30″ width=”880″ aspect_ratio=”16×9″ autoplay=”0″ controls=”0″]   Adobe Audition CS6 Tutorial This is a video tutorial on Adobe Audition CS6, with a great overview on the – then new – features from the update, including things that you can do in the version. [cbc_video id=”547″ volume=”30″ width=”880″ aspect_ratio=”16×9″ autoplay=”0″ controls=”0″]   Adobe Audition CS5.5 Tutorial The reasons why this video, together with the CS6 tutorial, get a lot of views is mainly because of the length of time since it’s been uploaded on YouTube, and because many users may actually be sticking to the older versions instead of buying the new versions under monthly subscription. Aside from a quick beginner tutorial, I give a brief overview about how to get started with the program, as well as the new features and effects that this Adobe Audition version has to offer. [cbc_video id=”539″ volume=”30″ width=”880″ aspect_ratio=”16×9″ autoplay=”0″ controls=”0″]   How To Make Your Voice Sound Better (Secrets Revealed) This is the most popular video I’ve recorded, thanks to our voice-over friend Darren Altman from voiceoverdarren.com. He persuaded me to talk about the secret source that I use when doing audio production. In the video, I give away the exact settings that I apply to a voice-over after it’s been recorded in Adobe Audition! Generate Noise feature in Adobe Audition

Listen to the Episode Below (00:11:38) Download iTunes Stitcher SoundCloud Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player By using only the Generate Noise feature in the Effects menu, there are many great noises you can create inside Adobe Audition. If you’re not using Adobe Audition, this is an amazing VST, VST3 and AU (for Mac) audio plugin: MNoiseGenerator MeldaProduction. Here are a few of my favourite noises: Vinyl Crackle Effect You’ll get that authentic sound of crackling vinyl. Usually we would like to remove crackles and pops from audio, but perhaps you’re producing an old-fashioned podcast promo or radio sweeper. Then this effect becomes ideal! Pink Noise Intensity: 20 DC Offset: -100% Waterfall and Outside Atmosphere Want to sound like you’re outside even when you’re not? This can create the perfect outside atmosphere and if you listen for a long amount of time, it could send you into deep relaxation. Waterfalls, streams, wind and more can all be heard using this effect. Brown Noise Spatial Stereo – Generates a noise that sounds like it’s coming from everywhere in your headphones. 1000 microsecond delay for the ultimate surround experience! Radio or TV Dead Air White Noise Mono Mono white noise sounds just like the crackle we’re used to hearing when a radio station or TV station is not tuned in. The typical ‘dead air’ sound that is generated by all frequencies playing randomly at the same time. Enjoy creating static bursts and more with this. You can even manipulate it to sound like a spaceship taking off, and more! Spaceship Taking Off Edit > Time and Stretch > Pitch Bender (process) Grab the white noise effect you just created and change it with this effect. Start with Turntable Losing Power, now draw the effect you’d like on your waveform! You’ll hear a spaceship or perhaps even a thunderstorm. Have fun with this process! NASA Released Sounds for Free NASA has issued a public domain licence on some of their old space missions, and you can get them all here. Noise Generation – It’s Over To You What effects have you created with the noise generation feature in Adobe Audition? Let me know in the comments! What’s The Best Laptop for Audio Production?

Listen to the Episode Below (00:23:30) Download iTunes Stitcher SoundCloud Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player What’s The Best Laptop for Audio Production? What should you know about choosing the right laptop for audio production? Here are a few recommendations and key points to note. 3 Reasons Laptops are Better Than Desktops for Audio Production They’re portable, meaning you can work from wherever you want. If you’re travelling from country to country, all you need is that backpack-sized computer. You could even be working from a desktop at home and decide that you want to work in the garden. It’s easy with a laptop! Flash storage is the standard in many of the newer laptops. This means faster access to the audio files you need (with less waiting time), and a whisper-silent HDD that won’t make loud noises all the time. Retina displays allow for finer grain detail on many laptops. 3 Action Points for Audio Producers Using a Laptop Sync everything you do to the cloud. That could be using Dropbox or another cloud storage service. Make sure you do this, as you can then access your audio and sessions elsewhere and carry on. It’s also a good idea to back up your DAW preferences and presets into the cloud. Does your audio editing software of choice allow multiple installs under the same licence? Can you, for example, install a copy on your desktop and your laptop machine without issues? Adobe Audition CC will allow you to install it on up to 2 machines at the same time.  [cbc_video id=”335″ volume=”30″ width=”880″ aspect_ratio=”16×9″ autoplay=”0″ controls=”1″] 3.  Consider external goodies such as an audio interface Scarlett 2i2 of tiny speakers M-Audio Studiophile Av40 M-Audio Studiophile Av40 to add that extra kick. Hardly any laptops come with decent built-in speakers and sound cards, so look outside the box. You may also wish to consider a really high-quality set of headphones Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO Headset – 80 OHM too. A Couple of Things Desktops Do Better Than Laptops for Audio Producers The mouse control on a laptop can often be much less intuitive for audio production than a mouse that comes with a desktop. This issue can be easily overcome by purchasing an external controller for your laptop. Desktops usually allow for far bigger local storage of files. This is not really an issue with Dropbox for cloud syncing. If you’re worried about filling up your laptop, you can always use ‘selective sync’ on Dropbox. The Best Laptop for Audio Production Apple builds products for media creators. That’s why I highly recommend their latest Apple MacBook Pro for audio producers. I would not consider the MacBook Air as, despite its beautifully light size and shape, I simply do not believe it will be powerful enough to produce intensive audio sessions. Always go for a bigger screen size if you’ll be using the laptop for audio production, as tiny screens will not allow you to navigate around your multitrack session very easily. If you’re looking for a PC alternative to Apple, then I’d recommend the Lenovo G500 for its power and amazing Intel i3 CPU. The 8 GB RAM and 1 TB hard drive should give you plenty of room to play with! What Laptop Do You Use for Audio Production? It’s over to you! Let me know what laptop you’re currently producing on in the comments below. The post What’s The Best Laptop for Audio Production? appeared first on Audio Production Masters.

The Best Audio Interface for Audio Production

Listen to the Episode Below (0:18:04) Download iTunes Stitcher SoundCloud Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player The Best Audio Interface for Audio Production I received an email from Mirna Cortes, asking me about the best audio interface for audio production: Hello Mike! I have a question about the M-Audio Avid product. Some people say that this is good and very cheap and also includes the software Pro Tools, will this serve to begin to recording audio? What is your opinion about this? I joined your community! I hope you answer, thank you. Audio Interfaces Mentioned Avid Pro Tools Express and Mbox Focusrite Saffire PRO 14 Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 The best little beginner audio interface. It’s so rugged and tough – in a shiny red box – that you can even transport it, as it is built for mobility. M-Audio Audio Interfaces I used to use an M-Audio Delta 44 PCI interface on my old PC. It was high-quality, but has now been discontinued. I’ve not tried it myself, but you may wish to check out the M-Audio M-Track 2 Channel Portable USB Audio and MIDI Interface. How To Make Sound Effects

Listen to the Episode Below (00:16:23) Download iTunes Stitcher SoundCloud Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player   How To Make Sound Effects This episode will touch on the subject of our next exclusive Audio Production Masters webinar – how to create your own sound effects using software & tools. How to Make Sound Effects with Household Items First, I’ll take a look at some household items you could use to create sound effects. Tin Foil Get a futuristic or robotic sound by rattling it or stretching it over a bowl, and beat it like a drum! Balloons Blow them up and make them squeak or release the air quickly for all kinds of amusing sounds. Plastic Bags Crunching of gravel or walking on snow can easily be created with a few supermarket plastic bags. Apples and Crisps The sound of digging, walking or eating can be created by biting out a chunk of apple! How to Make Sound Effects with Software Adobe Audition has some great noise generation tools, such as the ability to generate noise and generate tones. Making Radio Tuning Sound Effects in Adobe Audition R2D2 Sound Effect in Adobe Audition Using Generate Tones What is noise? They come in all different colour flavours: white, pink and brown are the most popular. You can also get blue, violet and grey noise too! These noises can sound like rainfall, waterfalls, the seaside and rivers. They tend to be very relaxing and are often the noises you’d find on an FM dial when tuning up and down radio stations. Some audio producers believe that new speakers and headphones can benefit from a little burn in by playing noise through them for a prolonged period. Voice Generator I love using text-to-speech, and I include some examples of using the Google Translate text-to-speech tool in this podcast. DTMF Tones This used to be a feature in Adobe Audition, up to version 3.0. You can create the touch tones you often hear when dialling on traditional phones. They’re still trendy and to this day, you can hear those tones even when dialling on an iPhone! Suggested resources for generating DTMF tones. Binaural Beats Different frequencies in each ear have been shown to relax, reduce anxiety, help you to meditate and more. They are also considered the audio equivalent of strobe lighting, so do use with caution and seek medical advice before usage.
