In the school system in Singapore back in my day, if you were retained more than three times, it would mean you would have to drop out of the schooling system altogether. It is one thing to wait on God for our healing, but it is another thing for us to partner with God in the process. Of course, when you are a family experiencing Autism, Aspergers or obsessive-compulsive disorder, I know from experience, doing anything outside of your daily plan can be easier said than done. Aside from our struggles, we still carry many desires in our hearts that we would like to come to pass for our families, and God, in His infinite goodness has some wonderful plans and purposes in mind for us. But often, we, in our human thinking will only speak about the things we would like to happen. So, is Jesus meaning, when He says, “Rise and go, your way; your faith has made you well” (Luke 17:19). When you are on the spectrum, the words that people are speaking to you have the potential to either help you or hinder you. Throughout my life my mother has been my greatest ally, my greatest supporter, and my greatest encourager. Her words have always been faith filled and gracious toward me. I still remember her saying to me, “you will be healed one day Reg, because the God that I serve will heal you.” There is one thing for sure, my mother never gave up on me or the promises God had for my life. You see, your words should always be pleasant, like ‘drippings of the honeycomb,’ (which are) ‘sweet to taste’ (Prov 24:13) and are good for the soul. Are your words helping? Autism, Aspergers and OCD overtime will, cause the soul to become extremely exhausted and weary. A life on the spectrum, is packed with daily complexities, challenges, and difficulties. For this reason, the soul is drained and is left depleted. God knows the struggles that a child on the spectrum faces, and promises through His word, to ‘satisfy and replenish every languishing soul.’ He will give rest to the soul that is weary and replace sorrow for joy (Jeremiah 31:25). God has allotted to each of us a measure of faith. Owing to that fact, we will either put our faith in Jesus, or we will put our faith in our feelings. Due to this, that faith driven fear will dictate their lives. There are two kinds of fear in this world. One is the reverential fear of God, and the other is the ungodly fear of the enemy. It is this ungodly fear that operates around the lives of those with Autism, Aspergers and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The operative or agenda of this ungodly fear, is to hinder and paralyse them from thinking they have any kind of a future or hope. Often when we find ourselves caught up in the midst of one of life’s many trials, we can become fearful of the outcome. In addition to that, doubt, anxiety, and panic also tend to creep in. This of course, is nothing more than the work and activity of the enemy. If he can keep you in a place of fear, you will doubt God, His word and what He has to say about you and your life. Throughout the bible we see that God is in the business of healing His people. However, for us to believe this to be so, we expect to see an outward change in our circumstances first. Often when we are caught in a catch 22 situation, we will find out whether our focus is on the things that are above or the things below.  It is also in these moments we will discover whether we are operating either by faith or being influenced by our sight. The bible tells us, that it was by faith, Noah, who had been warned by God about unseen events, (things that had not yet happened), built an ark.  When the rains came, this ‘call to action’ saved Noahs household. The word of God is preached so that we may benefit from it in one way or another, gaining spiritual insights, knowledge and wisdom that will enrich and profit our soul. Hebrews 4:2 tells us that if we only hear the word of God, but do not mix it with faith, it will be of no benefit to us. You see when we put our faith into action, mixed with the word, and partner with God, changes will start to take place, some might be incremental, and some might be big! Being on the spectrum, does not mean that you don’t have additional illnesses and ailments to deal with.  You see when the enemy has an assignment against your life, he won’t just create problems for you mentally.  His ultimate agenda is to bring total destruction upon you and me. Fear is a formidable foe for a child on the spectrum. It can engulf their being, ultimately affecting their every thought and behaviour.  Apart from that, God is far greater than any of our foes, His word is reassurance that nothing can stand against us when He is for us. Isaiah understood that without prayer to the Almighty God there was no deliverance. His heart prayer was, ‘Oh Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for you. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble’ (Is 33:2). When a child grows up with conditions like Autism, Aspergers or OCD, there is a certain degree of fear that they carry, so much so, that when they are in certain environments the very bones in their small bodies may even shake. What can change that is the gracious words of instruction and comfort, peppered with the Word of God, from a parent or another.  Those gracious words have the ability to soothe the soul and the body, extinguishing that element of fear and uncertainty. We find an account of this in the book of Proverbs, when king Solomon records the impact of his father’s gracious and wholesome words, as having the sweetness of a delectable honeycomb, bringing health to the body and the soul. These God inspired words of wisdom from Solomon, are key to stop that fear your child might be experiencing, from turning into trauma!
