Curling

This is a presentation about curling. Curling is a unusual sport for us but it’s very common in Canada and Scotland. In fact, it is an official Olympic sport nowadays. It’s played on ice and the participants slide stones toward a target area to win. If you want to win a curling match, your team has to be precise and to reach the circle. This is sport is about precision and not strength and it’s about cooperation between players of the same team. I’m going to talk about its history and how to play it. Speech script Morning everyone! My name’s Alice and today I’m going to talk about a sport that it's called CURLING. What is curling? Curling is a team sport in which players slide stones of a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. Let’s talk now about its history. The origin of curling traces back to the 16th century in Scotland, where the sport was played on frozen ponds in the winter. The first match took place around 1541. Since the 1700s and onwards, plenty of Scottish People emigrated to Canada. They brought curling with them. The Royal Montreal Curling Club was founded in 1807 and is the oldest continuously active sports club in North America, not just Canada. Even though Canada is a major representative of curling, the World Curling Federation headquarters are in Perth, Scotland. Curling was introduced as an official Olympic sport in 1998 and now is very popular. But how do you play it? Two teams, of four players, participate in a curling match. Each player slides round stones, which are concave on the bottom and have a handle on the top. They throw them across the ice rink, which is marked, as I’ve said before, with concentric bands. The object of the game is for each side to get its stones closest to the centre. So, what is the equipment needed to play this sport? If you want to play this game, you need, of course, to be part of a team. Once that’s done, you’ll need: curling brooms, stones (rocks) and curling shoes. That’s all, I hope you enjoyed my speech and thank you for listening to me!
