How to Be a Better Ally for Social Justice featuring Dr. Joy Cox

I have been looking forward to speaking with Dr. Joy Arlene Renee Cox for months now. She is such a beautiful soul and I'm so grateful to her for all the work she's doing in the world. In today's conversation we talk about trusting our intuition, the lived experience of individuals with larger bodies, being brave in the healthcare industry, cultural biases, and discrimination against people with different bodies. In light of the current season of anti-racism, she also answers the question of "How can we use our intuition to be better allies and advocates?" Political action as a tool for liberation, especially for people with multiple identities is having an exciting moment in our history. Dr. Joy Cox sees a lot of that happening in the communities. She said in this episode "Liberation is built on the structure of bravery. If we look back generations, we'll see that our parents and our parents' parents' parents' had something to fight for... When you look at activists now, the shoulders they stand on belong to people who were conditioned in bravery, so to speak, they were able to stand up to the things that were impeding against them and say 'we're gonna do this.'" This conversation with Dr. Joy Cox challenged me and inspired me in such good ways and I hope it will do the same for you too! Especially as we dive into a new season of personal and societal bravery for the rest of this year, we need as much of this kind of bravery as we can get! Her book "Fat Girls in Black Bodies: Creating Communities of Our Own" releases September 29th of this year and The School of Bravery cannot wait! More About Dr. Joy Cox Joy Arlene Renee Cox is an ordinary person who has been given an ordinary opportunity to share stories about people much more fabulous than herself. She is a Philadelphia native, born on the blessed thirty-first day of December. Joy is a claircognizant Capricorn that thrives through connection and love, rooting for the underdogs in life to take their rightful place as overcomers. She is also a doctor, receiving her PhD from Rutgers University–New Brunswick in 2018. Her field of work is centered on fatness, identity, and social change. Reflective of the name she bears, Joy has the cheeks to out smile her detractors. Reflective of her work in print, she has the research to back up her claims. While the spotlight has never been a position she’d prefer to stand in, Joy does believe in speaking up and advocating for what’s right. She is the author of Fat Girls in Black Bodies: Creating Communities of Our Own, published through North Atlantic Books, and the host of the pro-fat, pro-Black podcast Fresh Out the Cocoon. Joy has been featured in articles by the Huffington Post and SELF magazine. Joy has also been on several podcasts, such as Positive Nutrition with Paige Smathers and Food Psych with Christy Harrison. Good Girls Talk About Sex & Context with Leah Carey & Emily Ann Peterson

Today we get to discuss something we haven't really talked much about on this show! It's kind of shocking really when you think about it. But Leah Carey is the perfect guest to pop this bravery cherry of ours because she is a Sexual Communication Coach! In this episode, you'll hear Leah Carey and our founder, Emily Ann Peterson, discuss the importance of context to your sexual life, how Leah's context defined her brave sexual journey and blossoming, and other lovely tidbits that you will really appreciate. We have a feeling you'll be hearing more from Leah in the future! There's so much to learn from the bravery of intimacy! About Leah Carey Leah Carey is a Sex Educator and Sexual Communication Coach who helps people learn to communicate about sex so they can get what they really want in the bedroom - rather than just tolerating what they’re getting. She is the host of the podcast “Good Girls Talk About Sex.” Sexual freedom is a subject that is deeply personal to Leah because she spent most of her life being a VERY good girl. Most of the sex she had was either boring or painful, but she endured it because she didn’t know she was allowed to ask for anything different. Having taken her own journey to sexual freedom, she is now passionate about breaking the silence, fear, and shame around women’s sexuality and pleasure, and redefining what it means to be a “good girl.” www.leahcarey.com www.instagram.com/goodgirlstalk www.facebook.com/goodgirlstalk About The School of Bravery The School of Bravery is a learning lab for life, career, and creativity. We have such an exciting episode for you today! To coincide with last month's bravery ingredient of Vision of Possibility, I wanted to introduce you to someone very special: Danielle Hope Diamond Danielle reached out to me to potentially become a guest expert of The School of Bravery and get interviewed on the podcast. However, after getting to know her very briefly, it became clear that she should be much more than just a one-time guest on our little podcast. Danielle is our new podcast co-host for The School of Bravery! Hooray! At the moment, she and I are hoping to release one joint episode like this one each month and one solo episode each. When we have appropriate guests to interview, we'll also release those as they arise too. I'm so excited for you to get to know Danielle more as the year unfolds for us! I think you'll catch her unique Vision of Possibility like I have over the last month that she and I have worked together on all this for you! Enjoy! Cyberstalking: Vulnerability & Power of Choice

Note: This episode might contain triggering content for some audience members. This month in The School of Bravery we've been focusing on the bravery ingredient of POWER OF CHOICE, while last month we covered VULNERABILITY. Both topics relate to what I want to bring up with you today... Cyberstalking. This is one of the rawest and un-edited podcast episodes I've ever published. There is crying in this episode, but you'll also hear hope and thankfully, power of choice. I've been silent on this podcast and on social media for very good reason recently. But the metaphorical duct tape needed to come off today because 1) I'm going into the studio to record my next album and I wanted you to know and 2) because it was time to let you know what really happened since I returned home from my last round of travels... If you or someone you know could use a boost or a new perspective on stalking, stalkers, and cyberstalking -- please send them my way. I don't know everything, but I do know that it is very serious (often deadly) and can rattle even the strongest among us. Here's to finding the safety we need and to taking the duct tape of fear off our mouths. Here's to greater visibility, mental health for all, and not letting fear stop us. Here's to bravery feeling easier every single day. About The School of Bravery The School of Bravery is a learning lab for life, career, and creativity. Through monthly masterclasses, guest experts, weekly office hours and so much more, you'll explore what it really means to "put yourself out there" and how bravery does not have to feel like a panic attack. It can feel easier! Visit http://schoolofbravery.com for more info! Fabienne Raphaël on Taking Big Risks

Because this month we're focusing on the bravery ingredient of Risk, it's the perfect time to talk with my business colleague, Fabienne Raphaël! In today's episode, she and I discuss things like why risks are so important to feats of bravery, how your life can change for the better because of risks, and what it can look like to make risky decisions. As a guest expert, Fabienne Raphaël and I also spent some time with students of the School of Bravery in a students-only guest expert training. In that training, she dives a little deeper into risky decisions by outlining the very first thing she recommends doing before taking a big risk. I highly recommend listening to that.
