How The Conversation (News) Began with Lisa Watts

Today, we live in a world of fake news and alternative facts - an infodemic where decisions are made on emotion not evidence. In worldwide coverage of the covid-19 pandemic, there has been increasing misinformation about coronavirus. As consumers and concerned citizens, where do we go for trustworthy information? My guest this week, Lisa Watts, describes herself as a long-term "news junkie". Having held multiple senior roles in digital media, when the idea for The Conversation was pitched to her, it was immediately compelling. Now with more than 10,000 donors, The Conversation is a news outlet operating on a not-for-profit basis, bringing independent, research-backed journalism to the general public. In episode 195 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Lisa and I discuss the death of traditional media, the birth of The Conversation news outlet and she reveals how her not-for-profit team got their fledgling platform out to tens of thousands of fellow news junkies.----Are you considering starting a podcast? The Uluru Statement: Changing The First Nations' Narrative with Thomas Mayor

Some years ago, while living in Broken Hill, I was privileged to work closely with the local aboriginal community. It was through this work that I learned the very real and tangible power of storytelling to bridge gaps and help foster positive change. As a non-aboriginal Australian, this experience helped motivate my desire to understand my Australian story in a way that connects to, acknowledges past hurts and celebrates the incredible stories of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes. Thomas Mayor is the National Indigenous Officer at the Maritime Union of Australia, and a passionate advocate of the Uluru Statement and the three reforms contained within it. In fact, the Statement is an invitation to all Australians - to "walk with us" and support the proposed reforms to create a better future for the entire Australian nation. If you believe that the First Nations deserve to have a voice, this interview with Thomas will help you understand how to show your support. In episode 194 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE at Adelaide Writers' Week, Thomas recites the entire Uluru Statement - which he knows by heart. He explains the journey to create his book, Finding the Heart of the Nation, shares some helpful resources and extends an invitation to join the movement.----Are you considering starting a podcast? Audio vs Video Editing And The RodeCaster Pro

I've been involved in video production for nearly 20 years and audio production for 5 years, over which time I've learnt and continue to learn techniques to help craft story. I've self taught myself tools like Adobe Premiere and RODECaster Pro but my primary role is not editing, it's marketing and storytelling. However, through my experience I have learnt the importance and power of good editing to help tell a compelling story. Alex Plisko is an experienced video editor, currently working for the Nine Network in South Australia, editing the nightly news. So if anyone knows how to tell a story, that quickly engages attention, it's Alex. He is now also branching into podcasting and is soon to launch his first podcast, Trailer Island. In episode 193 of Be The Drop, Alex talks about his new audio editing tool, the RODECaster Pro which is helping him kick-start him journey into podcasting. He also shares a range of insights into audio vs video editing and how beginner editors need to feel comfortable about making mistakes.----Are you considering starting a podcast? Wabi Sabi: Embracing Imperfection with Michelle Cox

In traditional Japanese philosophy, wabi sabi (??) is a world view that sees beauty in imperfection. A concept that as we muddle through remote working and home schooling during COVID-19 restrictions, I have seen an increased number of people embrace. Business meetings from home via Zoom have increased our empathy for life's imperfections, as we navigate interruptions from dogs, children and technology issues. My guest this week has been guided by this philosophy for a number of years. Michelle Cox describes herself as a "reluctant author" even though she has just written and launched three books in her Wabi Sabi Series. Michelle is passionate about embracing the unconventional and challenging the status quo. Her personal journey has been full of challenges, from cancer to considerable loss. But these 'imperfections' in life are what make her human and motivated her to release her book series. In episode 192 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Michelle talks about the concept of wabi sabi - embracing imperfection and how the book series came to fruition. She also shares her thoughts on the power of simplicity in communication. ----Are you considering starting a podcast? At Narrative Marketing, we deliver a full range of podcast production options. The Future of Personalised Video Content Using Ai Technology

I've been passionate about the power of video content for a long time. Being visual, it's possible to achieve strong emotive connection. However, with high volumes of video now used in marketing, it can be hard to make your video stand out. One answer may lie in advanced AI software, used to create extremely personalised video messaging, with tailored content produced in real-time. Nathan Musson is the founder of eMoo Media, which has developed a solution to completely personalise video content. Through AI, the footage and content is selected and editing using the viewers specific profile information. Using personality, behaviour and intent elements the software creates programmatic storytelling videos delivered at mass scale. In episode 191 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Nathan blows my mind with examples of personalised video content this software has created. Nathan also shares valuable insight into the power of personalisation.----Are you considering starting a podcast? At Narrative Marketing, we deliver a full range of podcast production options. Data Privacy and Social Media Law with Paul Gordon

The digital landscape has changed dramatically in the past decade. Instagram, for example, was launched in October 2010. Now, it's estimated to be worth more than $100 billion. There's a whole category of people who earn their living by being Instagram influencers. Digital makes up roughly half of all advertising spend. But with all this transformation has come data privacy issues, cyber-bullying and the birth of social media law. Paul Gordon, is a Partner at Wallmans Lawyers. Paul is one of the few lawyers in South Australia specialising in social media law, which he has been doing since 2012, which in social media years is a long long time. In fact, that takes us right back to when Facebook bought Instagram. In episode 190 of Be The Drop, Paul talks about some of the challenges businesses face in today's world of social media. He outlines key issues to be aware of when sharing content online, plus insights into how social media law is keeping us safe and engaged online.----Are you considering starting a podcast? Episode 189 Daniel Teitelbaum - Playful Thinking (Pause Fest)

I believe that we can absolutely take our work seriously but still have fun whilst doing it; actually if you're not able to have fun and implement playful work practices, I'm not sure what's the point! As adults, we sometimes forget how important it is to remain playful and curious about how we learn and interact with others. Daniel Teitelbaum initially studied philosophy before helping to set up The School of Life branch in Australia, where he delivered the organisation's playful workshops. Through this work and his previous role as a Youth Leader, Daniel discovered the power of play to help develop better ways of thinking and working. Daniel recently launched his own business Playful Thinking, to help people and organisations think playfully. In episode 189 of Be The Drop, Daniel talks about the importance of being earnest. He also shares numerous and incredibly useful tips for incorporating playful work practices to improve outcomes.----Are you considering starting a podcast? Networking Tips For Introverts: 100 Lunches with Kaley Chu

As an extrovert, I sometimes take for granted how comfortable I feel networking and meet new people. In a professional capacity, it's an extremely valuable skill to have - to speak confidently in meetings and to make contact with new business prospects. However if you don't feel comfortable in this situation, then you'll definitely appreciate the networking tips for introverts from this week's guest. Kaley Chu had always been highly introverted. But then she got a new job and didn't utter a single word in her first client meeting, and decided she wanted to change. This was when she developed the idea for 100 Lunches. Over the course of one year, she had 100 lunches with total strangers in order to break out of her shyness and change her life. In episode 187 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Kaley reflects on her extraordinary transformation, from too-afraid-to-speak-to-anyone, to a confident public speaker and published author. She also shares some of her top tips for networking with strangers.----This episode was recorded prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, so during this current time of social distancing you should replace in person lunches with online Skype meetings; however the hints and tips to help you build your connections are now potentially more important than ever. -----The Be The Drop podcast is brought to you by Narrative Marketing, the Brand Storytelling Superheroes! We release new content each week!SUBSCRIBE to the blog hereSUBSCRIBE to Be The Drop podcast in iTunes hereSUBSCRIBE to Be The Drop in Spotify hereSUBSCRIBE on YouTube here for the full interview video, behind the scenes, bloopers & more.CONNECT with us on Facebook, follow @be_the_drop on Instagram or Twitter.CONTACT US podcast@narrativemarketing.com.au

Communication To Effect Global Change with Ben Bickford

A waterfall begins with one drop. That's the concept behind the Be The Drop podcast, and a key philosophy in my life. I believe that, together, we can create and achieve amazing things. My guest this week has a very similar outlook. In fact, the philosophy of his company, Bionic, is 'together, we find a better way.' His life's purpose is to find what unites us for positive global change. Ben Bickford is a visionary and philosopher, but he's also a businessman. From philosophising with someone from the Atomic Energy Commission while selling things at Camberwell Markets in London aged 15, to debating global change with some of the world's greatest minds at the 2020 Global Economic Forum - Ben thinks BIG. In episode 185 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Ben reflects on some of life's seriously big questions. Chef Adam Liston: Community and Collaboration over Competition

Success isn't something that happens overnight, it's much more long term and comes from building knowledge and experience. Chef Adam Liston started collecting cookbooks from a young age but it wasn't until he left high school that he started working as a cook. Surfing through the day allowed him to indulge his interest in cooking at night and in his early 20s, he left Adelaide to pursue his culinary adventures in other states and overseas. During his travels, Adam honed his craft in Shanghai working at the prestigious restaurant T8. Returning to his home town, Adam is cited as lighting the Adelaide dining scene on fire, when he co-opened Japanese hotspot Shobosho on Leigh Street. In episode 184 of Be The Drop, Adam reflects on community and competition in the food industry, and the launch of his restaurant, Shobosho. He talks about the importance of attention to detail and shares valuable tips on how to run a successful business.-----As one of the country’s longest-running food and wine festivals, Tasting Australia offers innovative events and indulgent adventures. Curiosity and Story-yelling with Shingy

Working in marketing, I'm often asked about the balance between creativity and strategy - which is more important? How do businesses harness creativity in a strategic way? But they're not 'chalk and cheese'. They're not opposites that somehow need to be brought together. Someone who knows this better than many is this weeks guest, Shingy. David Shing - or Shingy as he's more commonly known - is a Digital Prophet. In basic terms, he contextualises behaviours and trends for brands within the digital landscape. He advises how to have great ideas that bring brands more value - so creativity and strategy are in his makeup. But with a background in design, media and marketing, the real superpower Shingy has at his disposal is his unquenchable curiosity. In this episode of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Shingy provides tips on how to unearth great ideas, he reflects on the definition of craft and being a craftsman, plus we have an interesting debate about storytelling and the power of curiosity.----Are you considering starting a podcast? Human To Human (H2H) Connections with Lisa Leong

My interview this week is with a woman after my own heart. Her 'item of significance' is a microphone, she's a business owner and radio host who values meaningful conversations, understanding the profound importance they have in today's digitally connected world. Lisa Leong was working as a lawyer when she first starting interviewing guests in her 'hot seat'. It wasn't until she was in London that she discovered her passion for radio hosting and landed her first official presenting gig. Lisa is now ABC Radio Host of the This Working Life program. She's also CEO of O1O APAC, a "social technology" consultancy that helps the world's largest and most pioneering businesses to move from an "ego-system" to an eco-system. In episode 182 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Lisa reflects on her incredible journey from law to radio and then consultancy. We discuss the value of human connection and she describes the importance of taking an experimental, beginner's mindset in any new endeavour.----Are you considering starting a podcast?
