068 - Why Bridges Collapse

Title: Why Bridges Collapse Hello my fellow heroes, and welcome to episode 68! On August 1, 2007, A Minnesota Bridge collapsed, 13 people were killed and 145 were injured. Investigators said the designers had specified a metal plate that was too thin to serve as a junction of several girders. The bridge was designed in the 1960s and lasted 40 years. But like most other bridges, it gradually gained weight during that period, as workers installed concrete structures to separate eastbound and westbound lanes and made other changes, adding strain to the weak spot. At the time of the collapse, crews had brought tons of equipment and material onto the deck for a repair job. There are many reasons why bridges collapse but there were a few common reasons: Earthquakes Floods Design flaws Poor Maintenance That got me to thinking about how a bridge collapse and the cause can parallel our lives. So how do these causes parallel our modern lives? Earthquakes – Something happens in our life that shakes us to our core. Floods – Massive, rapid changes that we have no planned for and are not prepared for happen in our lives Design – In today’s modern age we are pushing ourselves farther than we ever have before. We are asked to do more with less. Poor Maintenance – We don’t take care of ourselves. We work too much, and don’t take time to rest. Closing Message: Thank you so much for listening today. 064 - Rabbits and Squirrels

Title: Rabbits and Squirrels Chasing rabbits and squirrels can hurt you success Hello my fellow heroes, and welcome to episode 64! “The man who chases two rabbits, catches neither.” ~ Confucius. Also remember the dog names Dug in Pixar’s movie up? He wears a collar that allows him to speak but he is constantly distracted and every so often yells, “Squirrel!” Both of these examples, the ancient one and the modern one depict a lack of focus. And when it comes to achieving you goals, your desires and your dreams, a lack of focus could, at best delay your success and, at worst, lack of focus can derail your success completely. Lack of focus comes from not prioritizing what you want to accomplish You must decide what is the most important goal You also must decide what can wait till later You have to reaffirm your focus on a daily basis Read your goal, desires and dreams every morning Be intentional about what you will do today to get closer to those dreams Read your goal, desires and dreams every night Ask yourself, “What did I do today to get closer to these dreams?” Know your Non-negotiables Have a preset list of actions that will not change, no matter what’s going on around you, and make a contract with yourself to do them everyday If you lose focus, get back on track as soon as possible Acknowledge the misstep but don’t dwell on it Pick up right where you left off and keep moving forward Create accountability Tell a trusted friend or family member what you are trying to accomplish and ask them to help keep you accountable Create a reminder system to help you keep focused Create a tracking system that shows clear progress toward the goal you’ve set The big take away today is that when we start a new project, or have a new goal, it is exciting and for a short time, you are hyper focused on it. The problem is, excitement has a half-life. It will diminish over time no matter how grand the vision is. So, if you are going to see this through to completion, you gave to remain focused on the end goal. The best way to start down this path is by knowing your why. Why is this so important? Title: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions Hello my fellow heroes, and welcome to episode 63! I heard a riddle the other day, maybe you’ve heard yourself. Five frogs were sitting on a log, three of the frogs decided to jump off the log. How many frogs are left on the log? The answer is five. You see, while three decided to jump off the log, they never put any action behind the decision. I think this is an excellent representation of how many of us go through life. The most obvious case in point is New Years resolutions. In just over a month, 2018 will be upon us Many of us will establish new years resolutions Most of us will abandon them within a week Because we will put no action behind our decision or resolution Decisions without action are worthless Just like Bible says faith without works is dead So too will the change be dead in your life if you make decisions without action You can decide to save money You can decide to loose weight You can decide to write a book But all of the decisions require you to take some sort of action Most people fail to take action because They don’t know what to do They are intimidated The action is difficult and they are not truly committed to taking it How to avoid the trap of inaction Find a mentor who has walked your road Understand how your life will change by taking action on your decision Understand the consequences on NOT taking action on your decision Create a system of accountability for the actions you must take to support your decision Be intentional about making positive decisions for change in your life and follow through with the appropriate action to support your decisions to create lasting change. Reviewing the plan regularly ensures you remain on track for the long haul Your Goal Plan should include mile markers to celebrate defined progress toward the finish line Remain flexible incase of setbacks Gameify your goals and/or your milestones through challenge or contests. Their belief was that their value as a person was tied to their ability to earn it from their loved ones, friends, and their colleagues. You have Inherent value; you don’t have to earn it! You are valuable because you are you, not because of what you do for others Stop living your life desperate to please others You can not please everyone, not even your loved ones, stop trying Stop trying to make others happy at the expense of your own happiness Doing that leads to frustration, even anger because it never works Stop tying to your happiness to the actions of others Your happiness, your joy cannot be dependant on outside events, situations or circumstances Happiness begins with your contentment with in you are, not what others want you to be You have Inherent value; you don’t have to earn it! Title: Remembering Las Vegas (Ordinary People Become Extraordinary Heroes) Hello my fellow heroes, and welcome to episode 58! I am recording this week’s episode with a heavy heart. I’m sure most of you, if not all you know that America suffered a national tragedy this week when an individual released a hailstorm of bullets on defenseless, unarmed, unsuspecting concert-goers in an extreme act of cowardice in the city of Las Vegas. At least 58 people lost their lives and over 500 where injured in this unprovoked, and completely unjustifiable act. It was, and is a true tragedy in every sense of the word. In the midst of this tragedy, while bullets flew and fear rained from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, something happened that no one could predict. In the moments before first responders could render aid, ordinary people became extraordinary heroes.

My coaching client admitted being addicted to his comfort zone Three Reasons to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone Your creativity lives outside your comfort zone Comfortable is boring No pizzazz Just sameness Mindless repetition Leaving your comfort zone gets you out of that boring place Your comfort zone is a bland place There is no life No vibrance Getting out of your comfort zone puts the color back in your life Your creativity in shut down when you are entrenched in your comfort zone Doing the same thing day in and day out is not creative There are no decisions that force you to create new solutions Leaving your comfort zone brings you back to a creative place Stepping outside your comfort zone generates personal growth You have to face the unexpected and deal with it outside your CZ You have to learn and apply new knowledge, new information to succeed outside your CZ You find deeper relationships, more success, and more adventure when you leave your CZ You become a risk taker Hang out with risk takers You learn to just go for it You won’t regret the things you did, you’ll regret what you didn’t do We like being in our comfort zones because we feel safe. We feel like we know what to expect. But that is a false sense security. The world around us does not care what we want or how we feel. It is constantly moving and changing around us. That means we have to keep pace and move, change, and adapt to it. We either keep pace and make things happen in life or we sit back, in our comfort zone, and let life happen to us.
