Ayn Rand Hero: Reasoning With A.I. w/ Jay Friedenberg

What happens if intelligence grows faster than values and ethics? The first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16th 1945. The dizzying leap forward in our capacity to harness energy for fuel and for ammunition changed the way we understood politics, war and the protection of our own existence as a species. Artificial Intelligence is bringing up a lot of the same fears (except this time it will be able to think for itself — in a manner of speaking … ) In this episode, Jay Friedenberg, scientist, author, and artist, joins me to discuss the dangers, the exaggerations and some of the implications of what an ‘intelligent technology’ might mean, the ethical implications that we need to consider and how we can move forward. Check out some of the highlights: Learning to be focussed on your work [4:00] Why literature matters, and how it can help us [5:15] The Two ‘False Alternatives’ of the Future (Terminators vs Utopia) [15:05] The competitive advantages with new technology [25:00] How technology effects the art we make [31:00] Using technology to enhance our rationality [38:00] Rationality and Ethics: Values in artificial intelligence [40:15] What happens if computers become ‘Logically Omniscient’? Ayn Rand Hero: Don Watkins on Freedom, Morality, and Equality

Don Watkins is one of today’s most vocal opponents of the welfare state and one of the great proponents of Ayn Rand’s philosophy. A fellow with the Ayn Rand Institute, Don is co-author, with Yaron Brook, of the national best-sellers Free Market Revolution and Equal is Unfair. He is also the author of RooseveltCare: How Social Security Is Sabotaging the Land of Self-Reliance. In this episode you’ll learn: Why having a ‘hierarchy of values’ is one of the most important things about philosophy[12:15] Why you should read books you disagree with [18:30] America before and after welfare [30:00] Don’t fall for your ‘confirmation bias’ when researching your case [39:35] What we mean by inequality [43:30] The difference between political and economic inequality[50:10] The only way to ‘equalize’ (and why this doesn’t work) [1:01:40] How to think clearer about morality [1:07:30] Your two best resources for developing your thinking [1:17:00] I highly recommend you get a copy of Equal is Unfair if you want to learn more about the moral perspective behind the ‘equality’ debate – and how that impacts us. His other two books, Free Market Revolution and Rooseveltcare are also hard-hitting explorations into the political and economic world in which we live – and how we might transform them into a world in which we are inspired to live. You can learn more about Don at The Ayn Rand Institute or follow him on Twitter @dwatkins3.
