Gather round, children, for the story of one of the coolest ladies in literary history.   Zora Neale Hurston was born with a thirst for adventure and the confidence to conquer the world, even though at the start of the 1900s, to be both black and a woman seemed a formidable barrier to overcome.   But it didn’t take long for her to make her mark on the world as both a writer during the Harlem Renaissance (her most popular novel is Their Eyes Were Watching God), and an anthropologist, studying hoodoo and conjure all over the southern United States and the West Indies.   In fact, her life is so full of drama and adventure that this episode quickly turned into a two parter, so enjoy part one where Hannah and Tyler talk about Hurston’s early years (including a parent who might go down in BL&L infamy), her entrance on the writing scene, and initial anthropology expeditions. A Field of Trees is the first story I've written since Tick Tick, and I am happy to have written this new one for BL&L. Thank you, for the first time ever I kept a new years resolution. Please give thanks to my Glittery Space Angel of a wife for being my editor. Also, more fun facts... I lived on a Christmas tree farm for a few years as a teenager. I'll stand by these claims until sense is made of them or I die. I really saw a shadowy figure in the road one night, I really saw a crouched figure among the trees though only once, and I really did hear voices everytime I took a walk. If Mary Shelley's life were a book, you'd put it down because it sounds too dramatic and tragic to be believable. By her mid-20s, the creator of "Frankenstein" had run off with a poet, been disowned by her family, lost four children, published a literary masterpiece, and been widowed. William Shakespeare is the most famous playwright of all time, but his life is largely a mystery. No one wrote about his life when he was alive, and he left few (if any) personal writings and letters behind for historians to study. But Tyler and Hannah still found plenty to discuss during this episode, including Shakespeare's dad's fall from societal grace after being caught trafficking one very controversial material, Shakespeare's marriage to Anne Hathaway, and of course speculation that many of his most famous sonnets are about a man.   When Robert Jordan died in 2007, he left the beloved epic fantasy series “The Wheel of Time” incomplete. But a moving eulogy written by emerging fantasy author Brandon Sanderson caught the attention of Jordan’s widow, Harriet McDougal. After reading just a couple chapters of Sanderson’s novel “Mistborn,” McDougal knew she’d found the author to finish her husband’s series.
