BFGC 49 - Its a JCVD Party Van Dammit
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Van Dammit, this is an entertainment packed weekend right here. In lieu of looking at films individually, we have constructed the ultimate JCVD movie marathon for you. Foz has painstakingly put together a couple of themed lists that give you the best the muscles from Brussels has to offer.
But is this The Quest a Hard Target? Is this worth going AWOL from work to watch ‘em all? And will all this excitement cause you Sudden Death?
Join us as we munch down on Belgian Waffles and see whether this movie marathon makes a Double Impact or if it’s a Maximum Risk that's not worth taking.

BFGC 48 - Double Impact
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Van Damme does the ultimate splits playing twins in Double Impact. What better way to celebrate June Claude Van Damme by having not one, but two JCVDs. This 1991 action movie was a huge hit, even though it didn’t light a fire under critics, and is arguably the one that spin-kicked JC out of B-movies to top of the A-class. No Double Impact… means no Universal Soldier, Hard Target or Timecop. We take a deep dive into this enjoyable romp, with a diverted focus on well developed body parts.
But why was the leading actress cast? Does Geoffrey Lewis manage to underplay his role? And are two JCVD’s simply too much?
Join us on a junk ride in Hong Kong harbour to see whether two heads are better than one, or if they cause double trouble (and we don’t mean the film we covered a few episodes ago)

BFGC 47 - Reign of Fire
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Idealistic Christian Bale takes a cross-country journey, with gruff veteran hunter Matt Mac to chase down a dragon in a post-cataclysmic Britain. It’s basically Jaws with dragons, and that can’t be bad… can it? This 2002 action/monster movie was a bit of a flop at the time, but has built up a cult following in the years since. This is a movie we’ve been looking forward to covering for some time. It is both good, and bad at the same time. Listen in to find out which side is more prevalent.
But can Ben remain objective about a film starring Christian Bale? Is Mac still a sexy beast even with a shaved head and beard? And isn’t it weird seeing Gerard Butler looking so thin?
Join us as at the dragon powered BBQ to find out if our collective nostalgic memories are gently warming or more like scorched earth.

BFGC 46 - Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
What McConaughmay would be complete without a McConaughrom-com. There are so many to choose from, but we’ve gone with Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past. A loose reworking of the classic story A Christmas Carol, with Matt Mac as a promiscuous, gamophobic Scrooge visited by the titular spectres. Jennifer Garner and Michael Douglas co-star in this lightweight, but utterly enjoyable film.
But is this Michael Douglas’ most controversial role to date? Does Jennifer have enough charm to Garner the heart of Matt? And is McConaughey just too charming to be tied to just one woman?
Join us at the wedding of the decade to see if this McConaughrom-com is a poltergeisty pleasure, or if the ghost’s make it a bust.

BFGC 45 - Two For the Money
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Alright, alright, awwwwriiiiight! It’s the glorious month of McConaughmay, celebrating the best Texan export since the discovery of oil. Kicking off this most sacred of months is Two For The Money, a “based on reality“ drama about the world of legalised sports betting. Matt Mac is brought into this shady world by a gambling Svengali, played by the legendary Al ‘hoo-ah’ Pacino. This is one of those movies that’s a slam dunk on paper, but it hit a short stop at the box office, and failed to score with the critics. Time (out) for us to take a punt, and revisit this classy looking drama.
But does Pacino act like a walking parody of himself? Will it persuade us to become gambling addicts? And is Matthew’s performance McONaughhay or McOFFaughhay?
Join us down the bookies to see if this gambling drama is an odds on favourite, or a waste of a betting slip.

BFGC 44 - Double Trouble
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Imagine if someone made a version of the Arnie/De Vito movie Twins, but cast actual twins. Welcome to Double Trouble from 1992 starring body building brothers Peter and David Paul. They are Dead Ringers, but couldn’t be more different. One’s a cop, the other is a criminal, and they must work together to stop the bad guys. This is one of those films that appears out of nowhere on Netflix and just begs to be watched. We did, and we’ll let you know if you should too.
But do these twins give identical performances? Was this film really made in 1992? And just how wrong does it feel to hear an OG Star Trek actor swearing?
Join us in the proper man’s gym to see if these overly buff brothers create a Double Impact, or if they are Twins of Evil.

BFGC 43 - Showtime
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
It's Showtime! No, not Beetlejuice. Buddy cop meets reality TV in this 2002 action comedy. You might know it better as the one where William Shatner teaches De Niro how to act. That's right, Captain Kirk shows the man behind Travis Bickle, Jake La Motta, Rupert Pupkin and Young Vito how to act. That sounds good, yeah? But then it also stars a post 1980s Eddie Murphy, which is not such a sure thing. It was a critical and commercial bomb on release, but can it really be that bad? It's time to re-evaluate BFGC style.
But which films would you choose for the stars on the back of the DVD box? Will Eddie Murphy rein it in, or be all swivelling bug eyes? And is it possible for William Shatner to be the best actor in a movie?
Join us in the LAPD squad room to see if this Big Brother/Cop hybrid is arresting entertainment, or if it should be evicted.

BFGC Oscars 2018 Predictions
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Can we pick the Best Picture winner based on the trailer, and socio-political climate only? The Darkest Hour approaches and it’s time has come for us to Post our thoughts on the Best Picture nominees for the 2018 Oscars. Will the host Call Me By Your Name, or tell you to Get Out? Who will get to add those magic words to their Three Billboards posters? In the year of #MeToo, will a Lady Bird take homes the golden statuette, or will a Phantom Thread keep it with the patriarchy. Listen now to see if we have feeling in the Shape of Water, or like Shatner have we already Dunkirk.

BFGC 42 - Blade Franchise and Lows
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
The Blade trilogy gets the Franchise and Lows treatment. Who doesn’t love Wesley Snipes as the badass half-vampire. That’s a rhetorical question, by the way. Everyone here at #TeamBFGC are massive fans of the 1998 action horror classic, and the original made our list as one of the best action movies of the 1990s (listen to our Action Movie special from Jan 2017 for more). What about the sequels though? We can’t agree on which one fits better, and this has caused some heated debate in the studio. Foz believes the second entry has more merit, but Ben thinks Trinity is a much worthier sequel. Luckily for us, irregular guest, and Blade superfan, Dave is on hand to mediate and add some much needed perspective.
But is Blade 2 only popular because of Guillermo Del Toro’s fanboys? Does Trinity essentially act as Ryan Reynolds’ audition for Deadpool? And just how did Norman Reedus, AKA Darryl from The Walking Dead, manage to get work after his role here?
Join us as we cruise around in a black Dodge Charger to find out if these vampire sequels have teeth, or if they were left out in the sun too long.

BFGC 41 - Doctor Mordrid
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Should the Doctor Strange film have been more like this early 90s rip-off? Low budget studio Full Moon entertainment held the movie rights to Marvel’s Doctor Strange for a short period. When they lost the rights, they thought “well we’ve done all this pre-production work, might as well do something with it”. The result is Doctor Mordrid, a low budget fantasy action movie starring horror and B-movie legend Jeffrey Coombs in the title role. The Blu-Ray edition that one of us bought was definitely not released as cash grab.
Team BFGC are on hand to investigate a curious . This episode was recorded shortly after consuming a large amount of Kentucky branded fried chicken. Joining us in the studio is semi-irregular co-host Dave. Before we tackle the movie, Dave is subjected to a rigorous Q&A and gives us his own Desert Island Flicks.
But can Coombs play a heroic role and not come across as creepy? Can stop motion dinosaurs ever be rubbish? And does this film actually exist or is it a meat sweat induced fever dream?
Join us as we soak in a bucket of KFC gravy to see if this comic book knock-off has Cumberbatch quaking, or if it should have stayed in the Nth dimension.

BFGC 40 - Scream Franchise and Lows
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Scream is 21 years old and we look back at the highs and lows of the series in the first Franchise and Lows. Writer Kevin Williamson combined Dawson’s Creek with Crystal Lake, and roped in veteran horror director Wes Craven to create a ground breaking, crowd pleasing chiller. It revolutionised the horror movie and you could argue that the genre exists in a pre- and post-Scream era. It went on to spawn 3 sequels, not to mention an almost totally unrelated TV series. As we’re examining all 4 movies, there’s plenty to (Edvard) munch over.
But which one of them is the absolute worst? Is Wes Craven so good at directing he could do another instalment posthumously? And which character is worse, Gail Weathers or Monica Geller?
Join us in small town America as we see if these scary movies are a Ghostface Killah, or more of a restless spirit.

BFGC 39 - Critters
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Small, ravenous creatures are terrorising small town America. It can only be one film… that’s right, Critters. A sci-fi/horror action comedy that is most definitely not a knock-off of Gremlins. This is a movie that generates fond, misty memories for us in the studio. Its appearance on Amazon Prime means it’s time for us to re-evaluate this 80s classic. Our recall is not always totally accurate, though, as we have discovered in previous episodes. Fingers crossed that this is still a hit. But do Americans have a different idea on what constitutes a firework? Is 80s poodle perm rock music truly universal? And is this film a critical satire on the immigrant experience?
Join us in the remains of the white house as we see if this alien invasion is an unbelievably fun object, or more like an interstellar plot that comes after eight.

BFCG 38 - Red Riding Hood
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Twilight fever was running rampant and every studio was running a high temperature. Red Riding Hood was Warner Bros attempt at catching some of those twinkling YA dollars. WB were so eager to repeat the success, they even hired the same director. As no-one had ever tried to make a rites of passage/teen-based werewolf film before, there’s no way it could fail. This movie was not a huge success either critically or commercially, making it ideal territory for Team BFGC. We were both very tired recording this one, and we’re a bit rambley. But there is a previously unheard trailer for your entertainment.
But can it really be a werewolf film without a transformation sequence? Why is there a lack of chemistry with the romantic leads? And what was Gary Oldman’s thinking behind his performance?
Join us as we follow the breadcrumb trail into the forest and see if this supernatural romance is destined for greatness or if it’s just lupine lunacy.

Episode in
BFGCPodcast
It’s a match made in hell, as two of the biggest horror icons from the 80s square up for the fight of the century. In the blue corner, wearing the O’Neill shorts, we have the strong, silent slaughterer Jason ‘momma’s boy’ Vorhees. And in the red corner, with the flaming shorts it’s the chuckling child-killer Freddy ‘fingers’ Krueger. Whoever wins… well you know the rest. Team BFGC are providing the concise post-match analysis for 2003s action packed horror mash-up. But have American filmmakers ever actually been to a rave? Is Kelly Rowland destined for an acting career? And why wasn’t Katharine Isabelle given the lead?
Join us on vacation at Crystal Lake as we see if this horrific Odd Couple are a match for Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau, or if they provide more tragedy than Hamlet.

BFGC 36 - Fool's Gold
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
Before the McConaughssance, came the collapse and few films did more than to progress the fall than this poorly received turkey. Cashing in on the chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, Fool’s Gold is a half rom com, half action adventure that aims to recapture the spirit of classics like Romancing The Stone. Unfortunately, it didn’t convince audiences particularly well, and infuriated critics. Just perfect for us to investigate if this is a low point in Matt’s illustrious career. But did Ray Winstone accept this role for a Caribbean holiday? Should Malcolm Jamal-Warner aka Theo Huxtable be in more films? And should the accent coach be struck off for their contribution to this film?
From the other side of the world Sam recommends a rom com that has a considerably better reputation in this weeks Our Man in Japan segment.

When terrorists take over the White House, only one film can save the day, and in our 4th July special we find out which is better Olympus Has Fallen, or White House Down. We start by examining which is better on paper. Whilst we deliberate over their entertainment value, Sam, Our Man in Japan takes the reins and joins US Correspondent Vic for a stateside look at what films they think best represent America. Then it’s back for the definitive conclusion to discover whether Gerard Butler or Charming Tatum is the right man to save the president, and provide the most fun. But would Butler be more intimidating wearing just pants and a cape? Can Tatum Step Up 2: The Plate and bust the right moves on the bad guys? And just why would anyone vote Two-Face for president over Ray Charles?

BFGC 34 - Gods of Egypt
Episode in
BFGCPodcast
It’s been a while since we’ve had a decent swords, sandals and sorcery movie. Many have tried but, whilst some have come close, all have failed. Gods of Egypt gives Egyptian born Australian director Alex Proyas, purveyor of arch-Goth classics The Crow and Dark City, a go to try and brighten things up. Unfortunately, the reviews were so bad the director took to Facebook in a fit of rage. It has been known for critics to be wrong, and we are just the people to assess whether that is right. But just what has Bryan Brown been up to since Cocktail? Does Chadwick Boseman’s performance bode well for Black Panther? And can anyone teach us how to correctly pronounce Nikolaj Coster-Waldau?
Join us as we raft down the Nile to see if this movie is a golden idol, or touristy trinket.
