017 Songwriting doesn’t have to be so “raw & real”

In this episode I describe how that song writers have a often limited themselves by thinking they have to be so raw and real with their emotions and their experiences as they incorporate them into songwriting. Each time you write a song that has depressing lyrics, you will have to revisit those same emotions every time you sing that song. If you’re writing a song about your old boyfriend… what about when the new boyfriend comes, how is that going to feel? You’re the artist. You can paint whatever you want. Don’t be held back by preconceptions. Now is your time to be alive. Right like you were alive. Build your song today. I believe in you. 010 Manscape Your Destiny with Your Songwriting | 'Cry On a Dime'

Be inspired by discovering the prophetic edge to songwriting, and how Robbie Silverarm is going to bring post-covid joy to Hawaii and go On Tour this year. Build The Song is a Podcast that empowers Songwriters, Musicians, Rappers and Rockstars to be 100 times more On-Fire as Creators! On this episode I use quite a bit of humor to share about how we have a Gift on the inside, and that we can’t just hide it in the closet or leave it in a drawer. We’ve got to use it! Watching the documentary of Johnny Cash called “The Gift” will totally encourage you as a songwriter no matter what genre of music you are into. Johnny Cash’s Mom said to him, “Boy, you better use that gift!” And he never forgot it. And boy did he use his gift! And so will you and I too. When I got attacked by 2 huge Pitbulls here in Hawaii while riding my bike down the mountain, on Auhuhu Street at the very top of Pearl City here on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, I experienced a divine intervention where a Guardian Angel rescued me. Yet, I was knocked-out when the first Pitbull slammed into my mountain bike my whole right arm was crushed when I landed in the middle of the street, and needed to re-build with metal cages, pins and screws. AND YET… many song came out of that painful season. During these difficult covid/post-covid time it’s a challenge to write songs (…and it’s hard for Robbie to get a girlfriend too 😆 😩). Yet all of us are feeling it’s effects, it’s PAINFUL effects… some of us more than others. But through this I’m going to be going On Tour and doing 50 Shows here on Oahu to bring Post-Covid Joy. My Tour is called, “The Honolulu Dance Robot Yacht Rock Tour coming to a city near you, bringing sometimes Spam Musubi just for you.” "CRY ON A DIME” (song by: Robbie Silverarm / Honolulu, Hawaii) ‘Didn’t know that I can cry I can cry on a dime In the rain or sun shine I can cry on a dime Sometimes I wonder why Why I can cry on a dime (Someone came up to me and said…) It must be a Gift of some kind You can cry on a dime Then a still small voice Said inside, “Robbie…" (..no, you’re gonna have to Wait for this one…) Why…. Oh Why? Huh, Robbie ? ‘Cuz you almost died Why…. Oh Why? Robbie, ‘Cuz you almost died I can cry on a dime I can cry on a dime So, it was almost like that Voice was saying to me… Maybe you can take some Of that pain, and all that You’ve been through in your life.. During this post-covid season, Maybe you can bring some joy And break depression off their life And have a little fun with it, Robbie And I was really surprised It’s like “Have a little fun with it!” And I was like, “Oh wow?” And this is the first thing That came to mind… When you put me in the movies Then you’ll just why, yeah I can cry on a dime Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum P.I. I can cry on a dime I can cry on a dime, yeah Ain’t that right Bruno? I can cry on a dime, yeah. . . . --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/robbiesilverarm/message

009 Chris Cornell I Miss You So Much | My Song + My Story

In this episode I share tons of stories about Chris Cornell & how I met him when I was 14 years old. The story is in the song I wrote for him called, “Chris Cornell I Miss You So Much”. I play the song Live and then circle around and share the stories, which will so inspire you as a Songwriter. Even if you’re a… "Grandma Betty”, you’re gonna get a kick out of this episode of Build The Song. So, from the Creator Yacht I live on here in Downtown Honolulu, welcome to Build the Song! I mention Andrew Wood first, because it seemed so fitting. Not only because I knew Andrew, and we smoked flower before many of his shows when his band was called Malfunkshun (before Mother Love Bone). Andrew would always ask for me because… uh, yes Robbie always had a pipe for enjoying Canibus. The first time I met Chris Cornell was in 1984. I was 14 years old, and a Freshman at West Seattle High School. He was wearing combat boots, cut-off shorts, and some kind of custom-cut T-shirt. It was in an old basement at Norman Scott’s Dad’s house. We all called him “Uncle Norm”. There was lots of Rainer Beer and I remember he was playing a song by Scratch Acid when I walked in. Kurt Cobain also loved Scratch Acid, and you can see some of his early photos where he’s wearing a Scratch Acid T-Shirt. Even though I was young, I was already playing guitar and beginning to write songs. And that’s why Norman Scott and I connected at school. Scott was so handsome, and had cool spiked Jett-black hair and was into The Sex Pistols and Punk Rock. Eric Garcia was the closest friend to Chris, (might even be related, please forgive me for not having my facts all straight, but we were all like family back then, and we still are today). Eric and Michelle rented a house on 45th Ave in West Seattle which was thE jam house; and Chris came over all the time. 15 years later or so, I was able to rent that house, because Eric & Michelle bought a house of their own. I was SO excited to rent it, because it was like “keeping it in the family”. The very first album that Soundgarden put out was produced by Jack Endino, of Reciprocal Recordings, who is one of the top Producers in the world and helped shape the “Grunge” movement. Because of Norman Scott, and… I’m sure Chris put in a good word for me, I was invited to join the band, “Crypt Kicker 5” which was a cool quirky Surf Rock band, AND… Jack Endino was the drummer! Matt Cameron was there too with his fun band, “Couch of Sound”, and we’d hang out a lot together at Jack Endino’s house that was called, “The Skin Yard House”. The band, “Vexed” was also there too. At the time I didn’t realize the ramifications of being in a band with Jack Endino, which is like music history. But I’m so thankful I was a part of it. Chris Cornell’s House on Capitol Hill overlooking the freeway with Kim Thayil and Hiro Yamamoto, Bill the dog. 008 Get Yacht Sloshed + Robbie's Shooting Star Story

On this episode I continue the theme of overcoming opposition, but it was also a special day where I got to serenade a cute Asian receptionist at my knee rehab place, and also played my new song, “Kimo The Gambler Man” for everyone there too. When I came back to the yacht, Captain Otto, who is an awesome Creator, said, “You know… these covid times… I think it’s important to connect with our family and friends.” He said, “You should call your Dad”. It was so wild that he said that because just 2 hours earlier my Dad called me out of the blue just to say “hi” to me, and that.. made me cry. So later that night I began to think of my other family members, and decided to do a voice-memo for my sister Katie, who lives with her husband, Jeff in Seattle. I did it, because I am scared of email. Hehe. It’s a real phobia. You can google it ya’ self! But because of what Captain Otto said to me, I felt it was the Word of the Lord. I have been so lonely during these covid times, and I know you resonate with that as well. But that’s why I’m getting ready to Rock 50 Live shows on Oahu here, and I’m going to bring so much joy and (much needed) laughter to people’s lives as a kind of… “Post Covid energy shot in the arm” so we can all catch our second wind, and…. Maybe even (if we can take off our masks…) maybe Little Robbie can even get a girlfriend. Now, listen to me… you’re starting to get to know me, Robbie Silverarm, and so I’m calling this episode the “Get Yacht Sloshed” episode, because I’m totally upfront and honest that I recorded this episode at around 4am in the morning, and yes… I had a few beers, and was exactly after I sent a long voice-memo to my sister, telling her my “Yacht Story” (which I may include in the next episode), because it will blow your mind, and it’ll make you cry too. That being said… Let’s rock & roll! Let’s Build The Song! Because, girl… you KNOW you got it going ON! Much love & aloha to you all, 🎸🔧 I’ll be delving in further to various songwriting processes, which will be a bit more organized. These beginning podcast episodes are to meant to get the ball rolling, to inspire you to write songs, and help spark something new in you to create. 006 Overcoming Songwriting Opposition

Listen to Robbie's story about Jack Endino, Chris Cornel, Martin Feveyear, Bruno Mars, Prince, Johnny Cash, Rick Rubin, Cyber Punk 2077, Keanu Reeves, Johnny Silverhand, Samurai, Dave Growl and Robbie Silverarm As a Creator, as a musician, as a singer, as a songwriter… there is opposition, and it will slap you right up your face. And then a day, a week, a month, sometimes even years can go by in your life, because of opposition. I’m coming into your earbuds to encourage you, and help light a new fire to create! On a documentary on Grunge, they asked Jack Endino, “Why do you think so much good music comes out of Seattle?” Here what he said, and also what another Seattle producer said about my song "Under Again".  You’ve got to overcome song writing opposition. If you don’t, it’s like a slat in the face. I share many stories on this episode, and even included a clip of the spontaneous songwriting session I had on the yacht with Captain Otto just a couple days ago, the same night we went to the Karaoke Bar, and a guy there called me a “Rich Brat” because I said the word “yacht” instead of “boat”. It was opposition. And both him and his friend laughed right in my face. That same night I came back to the old weather-beaten 1970 Hughes Northstar Racing Yacht, which is a “Creator Yacht”, and the former owner was a Creator, and his art is still seen inside the yacht. Now, it’s going into a second generation with my artist friend, Otto and I get to be a part of it, and create here too. Be encouraged! Don't stop writing music! 'Love you all! 005 The Tale of The Tragic Romance in Hawaii - Build The Song

The Tale of the Tragic Romance in Hawaii is a song I wrote based on a true story of someone I know right here in Hawaii that will encourage you in your own song-writing process. Can I just say this? Songwriting isn’t always easy. Sometimes we try to force a song into existence when it hasn’t yet been birthed yet. But finding creative ideas to spark the song into its embryonic form is often closer than we think. My songwriting ideas come from many things, but many times what I'll do is first⏤ see how the music of the song feels to me first, and then go from there. Soon I’ll be delving in further to various songwriting processes, which will be a bit more organized. These beginning podcast episodes are to meant to get the ball rolling, to inspire you to write songs, and help spark something new in you to create. If you’d like to follow me on some of my social networks for further encouragement and updates on projects, etc. I’ll list a couple below. 004 [Bonus] 'Always On My Mind' Episode

On this Bonus Episode I share how Willie Nelson inspires me to write and perform music, and also... I play the song, "Always On My Mind" with the right lyrics this time. "Bonus Dude, you rock, Robbie!” Willie Nelson is a huge inspiration to me in more ways than one. His beautiful rendition of "Always On My Mind" puts shivers down my spine and makes cry every single time. But the fact he’s 87 years old (in 2021) and he’s going On Tour this year AND already has 2022 Tour Dates booked. (Shesh, don’t we feel lazy ?) but it so inspires me to make every day count, and to go for it. I challenge you to do the same! I wanted to include this bonus episode, because I talk a little more about Willie Nelson inspires me, and also I play my version of the song differently than episode 002, (and I correctly sang it... kinda, as imperfect as I am). Hope it inspires you to write music, go big, don't hold, make an impact on people's lives with your music, your art, your soon to be masterpiece. 003 'Curse Your Weather' - Build The Song

I wrote "Curse Your Weather" in about 10 minutes. I was scrolling through my YouTube feed and up came up Soundgarden's #1 song: "Black Hole Sun", and because of Chris's history with Depression, and how that it was so popular, it kind of made me mad. It made me made because Chris Cornell was a very good friend, and now he's gone. So, because of my close relationship with Chris I felt a certain artistic license to say what I saw in the song. I make reference to Black Hole Sun, Euphoria Morning, Times of Trouble, Say Hello 2 Heaven, and send my love to Victoria Cornell, the kids, and all who loved and do love Chris Cornell with all their hearts. If you're battling with Depression, Curse Your Weather, and then... come visit me in Hawaii! 002 'Always On My Mind' - Build The Song

Whether you're a Solo Artist or you're a part of a band I hope to encourage you, as a Song-Writing Creator to write music. I grew-up learning to sing and play guitar from Chris Cornell, or Soundgarden, and later on Audioslave. In these podcast episodes I'll be sharing a song, and also the story behind the song. But the song I want to share on this Build The Song episode is called, "Always On My Mind". It was written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James. But the song was made popular by Willie Nelson, as well as Elvis Presley, (and... soon to be by Robbie Silverarm) hehe... just kidding. It's so much fun being inspired by other artists and then creating something yourself that you never knew you could do. Hope this song and episode really encourages you! 001 Build The Song Trailer

Build The Song is Podcast hosted by Robbie Silverarm, helping Song-Writing Creators get fired-up to create more music and for us all to get more inspired, especially in the song-writing process. I grew up learning to sing and play guitar from Chris Cornell. I've been wanting to share what I've learned from him, as well as songs that he's inspired. You've probably never heard a podcast like this. The audio is a little rough around the edges, but I'm just getting started. I'll be recording from a 1970 Yacht in Downtown Honolulu. You'll hear some sail lines jangling, and motorboats going by, but I don't think you'll mind. But the audio will only get better. Special thanks to Otto, an artist who encouraged me to start this podcast, and who also helped name this podcast, "Build The Song". Are you ready?
