Millie Dollar Beauty: Eat that Glitter with a Spoon! (JK. Don’t. But It’s Technically Digestible.)
Episode in
Burlesque Stripped Down Podcast
Do you Glitter Responsibly?
I’ll be honest, I’d been pretty much using and abusing glitter without a second thought… until I saw what Millie Dollar was up to!
My very first repeat guest, Millie hopped back on Skype with me to chat about her newest endeavor, Millie Dollar Beauty, which is making biodegradable, vegan, cruelty free, hypoallergenic cosmetic glitters available to the masses! We chat all about why eco-friendly glitter is so important, her entrepreneurial approach, and what she’s been up to since her last episodes here on the show.

Here at Millie Dollar Beauty we love to glitter and sparkle on the regular, when Millie Dollar herself is onstage she’s never seen without her glittery eyelids, and she has even hosted workshops in the UK and Europe giving tutorials on how to get this sparkly look.
However we also love the environment, and believe we all need to do our part to lessen the evils of littering, and flooding our natural world with micro plastics. Micro plastics is a term given to glitter by eco conservationists, as most glitters are made up of tiny pieces of metal, or plastic, so they can cause harm to the ecosystem. Fish have been known to eat glitter that has ended up in the ocean, and due to the ingredients of these glitters, these are extremely dangerous to marine life.
It can also be dangerous to us, with some glitters being cut large, especially craft glitters, these can cause extreme eye damage. Anything from irritating the eye, leaving small cuts on the cornea, to in some cases even leading to the loss of an eye. We don’t think misusing glitter is a joke, we are very serious about providing a safe, hypoallergenic alternative that is safe to use on the skin.
Commercial glitters can also be harmful if swallowed, or inhaled due to some containing copper particles, which when small enough, can be absorbed into the blood stream causing lasting damage to the body.
Our glitters will break down in digestion due to their materials, and do not contain any harmful ingredients, so you can be sure any accidents are not the end of the world, and although your sparkle will live on forever, our sparkles live only as long as they are needed.
All of these reasons and more are why we are so proud, and working hard, to ensure the correct usage of glitter, and now with our range we can all can Glitter Responsibly!

Burlesque Stripped Down Podcast
SOMEBODY had to take on the immense job of chronicling burlesque costumes of past and present for future generations, and that somebody is here!
Rosey La Rouge, creator of the Pastie Project and a forthcoming scholarly monograph of burlesque costuming, joined me for this awesome conversation where we talk about her journey, work, and even the secret of life.

Rosey La Rouge is based in New York City, and has been on the burlesque scene for 9 years, performing from coast to coast. She is a professional costume designer and makeup artist with a Masters degree in Costume Design from Boston University. Rosey is currently interviewing burlesque legends about their costumes for Burlesque Beat, she blogs about the Pasties of the Week for The New York School of Burlesque, and she is writing a scholarly monograph on the entire history of burlesque costume for Routledge/Taylor and Francis under her muggle name, Coleen Scott.
The Pastie Project is a book by costume designer and burlesque performer Rosey La Rouge, featuring an archive of vintage and modern burlesque pasties, contributed by performers and costumers from all over the world. A costume history book of remarkable quality and original content, The Pastie Project is a must-have for costume designers and historians, vintage clothing collectors, and burlesque performers or enthusiasts. This book covers the history, pastie makers, and performers who make burlesque what it is today, and then tops it all off by teaching you how to make your own pair of beautiful pasties!
The neo-burlesque movement has embraced the pastie, and has elevated its existence, so that this significant accessory can be whatever the performer desires: ornate jewelry, a political statement, or the ultimate punchline to the artful narrative of an act. The Pastie Project celebrates burlesque’s appreciation of the body, the pasties’ impact on performance, and all levels of craftsmanship, from DIY to artistic mastery. The Pastie Project publication was funded by a Kickstarter campaign in March of 2017. Publication will be in June of 2017, and the book will be available for purchase on Amazon.com. Proceeds will be donated to The Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas.

6 Steps to Better Burly Productivity!
Episode in
Burlesque Stripped Down Podcast
Feel like there’s more you could be doing in your burly career to be more productive, more effective, and happier?
Wish you had time to perform more?
See yourself on the BHOF stage but have no idea how you’re going to get there?
Never fear, Velvet’s here! Today I’ve got six steps that, when applied strategically and devotedly, will help you to become a more productive and, thus, #BetterBurly artist.
AND I’ve got a special, FREE surprise for you hidden below, so don’t miss it! (Okay, it’s not really hidden. But you still have to scroll down to get to it!)
So have a listen and follow along, make some commitments to follow these steps, and download your surprise below!
6 Steps to Better Burly Productivity
1. Set goals. And make sure to set the right goals.
You can’t expect to make real progress in your journey or career if you’re not setting goals, benchmarks, or milestones to aim for. Some people have an aversion to one word or another, but it doesn’t really matter – use what works for you. But you have to use something.
Take some time to sit down just to brainstorm and refine your goals. Don’t assume that just because you have some general ideas floating around in your head that you’ve already got goals set. Sit down and put them to paper.
Use SMART goals, SMARTER goals, FREE goals, or DREAM goals. Those are all acronyms for different types of standards to hold your goals to – personally, I like to use SMARTER or DREAM goals, depending on the scope of the goal. I went way more in depth on these acronyms back in episode 30, Setting Goals You’ll Actually Achieve, so check that one out for more details.
As a side note, I did mention in that episode that I was putting together a worksheet on goal setting. I’m going to be honest, apparently I promptly forgot about finishing that shortly after releasing that episode. BUT I have that worksheet back on my radar and will be releasing that within the next couple weeks! Plus, I’ve got a different free worksheet actually finished for you…. but that’s step 4 and we’re not there yet!
2. Plan EVERYTHING.
Planplanplanplanplan. I know for a lot of creative types, planning sounds like the absolute last thing you want to be doing. But if you really want to take control of your burlesque career, if you want to perform more and make more contacts and have more, better acts and build your skills, planning for success is the way to do it.
This goes beyond setting goals. For every goal you set, you have to break it down into bite-sized, manageable steps that you’re going to take to get there.
How you plan is going to differ based on what type of person you are.
Are you old-school visual? I’ve had great luck with a giant board and colored post-its. It’s got an extra element of satisfaction because once you finish a task, you can either move it into a “done” column or, much more fun, crumple it off and toss it into the air triumphantly.
Are you techy? Use a tool like Trello. Trello is an online planning system with boards and cards that you can drag around, add notes & attachments to, color-code, assign to other team members if you have them, archive, and more. I talked a bit about Trello during my Top 5 Apps for a Burly King or Queen (episode 24) and also gave some resources there to help you use Trello to its fullest potential.
Are you listy? You don’t have to have a giant vision-board style wall hanging or use another computer app to keep track of your planning – if you’re a paper-and-pencil kind of person, stick with that!
But here’s something that’s going to make your life insanely easier- Pilot Frixion pens. These things are God’s gift to listy folks and planners. They’re colored, which is cool to really color-code those lists and notes, but even better than that – they’re erasable. And like really erasable, not like those shitty erasable pens that we used when we were kids.
Like the name suggests, they use friction, or heat, to erase, and they actually work.
PLUS, as I discovered from a planner that I bought recently, if you want to erase a whole thing, you can actually put it in the microwave for like 30 seconds and all the ink will disappear! Just make sure the notebook is microwave-safe, of course. Nobody’s exploding their microwave on my watch.
Those are just a few ideas for figuring out what type of planning works best for you.
Once you’ve decided on a method, start by simply breaking down the steps for each goal and assigning those steps a reasonable due date. There are various approaches to making planning more complicated and perhaps effective, but especially if you’re just getting started, don’t overwhelm yourself. KISS!
3. Schedule your time.
Not just rehearsals or meetings with other folks, but your actual personal time. Your brainstorming sessions, your rehearsals, your costuming binges, your Artist’s Dates. (If you’re not familiar with Artist’s Dates, grab a copy of the Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and get ready for your whole life to change.)
A great practice to put into place is the idea of setting up tomorrow today. At the end of the day, whether it’s your work day or entire day (just before bed), take 5-10 minutes to schedule out your day tomorrow. Pay special attention to your morning routine, the first thing you’re going to do to get you closer to one of your goals, and your top priority task. Those two might not be the same thing.
There is, however, a concept that works well for a lot of people, and that comes from Brian Tracy in his book Eat That Frog! Of course, there are no truly original ideas, so Tracy adapted this idea for business from a quote from Mark Twain:
“Eat a live frog every morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”
I love Mark Twain.
What Tracy suggests is to take that idea and “eat a frog”, aka do your most disliked or worst task, first thing, so that it’s all downhill from there.
This idea is hit or miss for me. Sometimes it works but sometimes then I start my day off with procrastination and find that I prefer to start my day off with a bunch of little successes to ramp me up to a big, dreaded task. Your mileage may vary, but try it out!
Another great time management strategy that may help you is the Pomodoro technique. The general idea is that we work better in short, focused blocks of time. Kind of goes along with Parkinson’s law, which is that work expands to fill the time we allot it.
To use the pomodoro method, we block off chunks of 25 minutes each to focus completely on one task, then take a 5 minute break, then do it again. And you get a longer break with every 4 pomodoros.
There’s whole planning and charting methods that go along with this, or you can just read about it and apply the general principles to your work. For example, when I pre-wrote this episode, I did three pomodoros using the timer function on my favorite focus app Focus@Will, and took short bathroom/walk around breaks in between.
For those of us with short attention spans, which is pretty much all of us these days, it’s helpful to get us to complete work in a shorter amount of time!
Speaking of which, don’t forget that almost everything takes longer than you expect it will, so make sure to give yourself a daily buffer to pick up the slack. It helps to chart expected and actual time to complete tasks, especially recurring ones, so that you can develop a better idea of the time it really takes you to craft an application email to a festival or splice together music for your new act or sew twenty-five buttons on a new garment.
4. Use worksheets.
Tons of people have created worksheets to help you track your Pomodoros, plan your SMART goals, and more. You’ll find what works best for you, but I personally adore using a well-laid-out, colorful worksheet or printable to give me joy in planning and tracking my life.
And thus, my friends, may I present to you…. the first in the BSD series of Better Burly Worksheets!
Just for you, darlings, I’ve created a multi-page worksheet/planning sheet to help you create and develop your acts. I put it together and then used it myself in planning for a show recently, then made some tweaks and wanted to share it with you all! It’s got space for planning out your storyline, your music, your costume, your tech and prop needs, plus your routine in as much or as little detail as you want.
Download the Worksheet here!
Your browser does not seem to support iframes. Click here to read this PDF.
Download the Worksheet here!
Download it here, then be sure to email me any feedback, things that worked, things that didn’t, things you’d like to see changed or tweaked… along with what other worksheets you’d like to see in the future. You can also take pictures of your completed worksheet, tag me, and #BetterBurly!
5. Use technology. And use it wisely.
Even if you don’t consider yourself a techy person, almost all of us have phones and thus access to a gazillion helpful (and some unhelpful) apps. I already mentioned a few in this episode that can help to make your life easier, more efficient, and more productive, and episode 24 features a few more of my favorites.
One major change since I recorded that episode, though!
Replace Evernote with Google Keep.
Evernote was too much. I know it’s robust for people who really use it to its fullest potential, but that wasn’t me. I found myself just getting overwhelmed with its complexity, and everything I added to it would just get lost.
Enter Google Keep! I don’t know how this isn’t a more popular thing, cause it’s AMAZING.
I could recount all the benefits and features here, but just head over to the Google Keep website and give it a try for yourself. And then start thinking about all the fantastic ways you can use it! (Many of the ideas in this episode/show notes page that talk about Evernote are also applicable to Google Keep.)
6. Get accountability!
Most of us need someone to help keep us on track.
You might be one of the Upholders (as made popular by Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies – take the quiz here) who is motivated purely by internal sources, but I’d say the majority of us do well when there’s something external holding us accountable.
So, form a Mastermind! There’s plenty to say about masterminds that I don’t have time to dive into here, but essentially this is a group of people committed to each other’s successes, with specific objectives. You may be all about support and celebration, but I’ve found it also works best when there’s an element of constructive criticism (and sometimes even tough love) involved. Read more about masterminds here.
You can also get an official Accountability Buddy to hound you about staying true to your commitments, goals, and to-do lists. For your accountability buddy, you may need to go outside your immediate circle – perhaps even outside of the burlesque or artist communities! Find someone that can push you gently in the right direction when you need it…. and you can push them in turn. Read more about accountability buddies here.
And there you have it!
Six strategic steps that you can take to improve your productivity and efficiency and help get you on the road to #BetterBurly.
Don’t forget to download your FREE Act Creation Worksheet here, and then send me an email or comment below with your thoughts!
See you next time, my productive pinwheels!

Trained in aerial arts and circus since 2012, Fifi La Roux turned to Burlesque in 2015, winning the title of the Best Newcomer at the 2015 Belfast Burlesque Festival, and she was one of the Judges’ top 5 finalists at Miss Burlesque Ireland 2016.
Fifi is also the producer of the Emporium Series, a series of quarterly emporiums (springtime, summer, autumn and winter) which combine alternative traders with classic burlesque in Dublin’s favourite vintage cocktail bar, The liquor rooms.
This lady really did run away with the circus (no seriously, she’s travelled with the Kelly Miller Circus in the States!) and after seeing her perform you might want to go with her!

Fifi La Roux on the Joy of Failure, Aerial Arts, & Giant Balloon Dogs!
Episode in
Burlesque Stripped Down Podcast
Fifi had so much goodness that I had to split it up into TWO separate episodes!!
Or maybe I just like hearing her accent so much that I wanted to keep it going as long as possible…. PLUS, as it turns out, we’re birthday twins! We both celebrated our birthdays this last Tuesday, April 4th! (Though I’m a taaaaad bit older )
This week, we’re chatting all about her journey from performance and circus artist into the big, bad world of burlesque… plus a bit about the Irish burlesque scene, the importance (and joy?! really??) of failure, getting your nose smashed in on your 21st birthday, and more.
Be sure you’ve subscribed to Burlesque Stripped Down so that the second half of her interview, coming next week, is delivered right to your device! Here are the links for iTunes, Android, Stitcher, and Google Play.
Listen in below, then have a look at all the links to keep up with her on her burlesque and music journeys!

Zora Von Pavonine & Jon Manning on “Burlesque: Heart of the Glitter Tribe”!
Episode in
Burlesque Stripped Down Podcast
Ooooh we got two honest-to-goodness movie makers in the house today!!
Jon Manning (director, producer) and Zora Von Pavonine (star, producer) of the new documentary film “Burlesque: Heart of the Glitter Tribe” join Velvet this week to chat all about movie making, defining burlesque (ack!), and diversity/representation on the stage and screen.
If you’re in Portland or Los Angeles and checking this out shortly after release, you can catch the film during the first week of March 2017!
~in Portland, OR at the Living Room Theater, March 4-9
~in Los Angeles, CA at the Montalban Theater, March 4-9
In just a few days, the film will also be available on iTunes and Amazon – I’ll update with links here once that happens.
If you’d like to see the film in your city, contact your local theater! As more releases are announced, they’ll be added here.
So, listen in below, check out the links, and then go see it in your city or on your digital device! The film is a fab representation of our industry and all the sexy (and not-so-sexy) secrets that go along with it.
(Don’t forget, if you’re loving Burlesque Stripped Down, you can help out the show by joining the Posse, supporting on Patreon, sharing with your friends, and subscribing on iTunes/Android/Stitcher/Google Play/ALLTHETHINGS.)
Glitter Tribe is a documentary feature about the passion and personalities at the heart of today’s new wave of burlesque. On stage and in candid conversation, twelve of today’s hottest performers reveal the naked truth about an exotic world where artifice is a route to authenticity and pretending to be someone else is the ultimate journey to become yourself.
These burlesquers put it all on the line in performances that are sexy, funny, elegant and outrageous – and they bare more than just their bodies as they discuss their artistic vision, their financial struggles, the misconceptions that infuriate them and the community that sustains them.
Zora Von Pavonine was born on a full moon and raised on 20 acres.
Surrounded by animals, held most dear was the peacock family that allowed her to follow them around, telling stories, inventing all kinds of life. Momma Pavonine saw the creative spirit encapsulated in her precocious little scorpio and encouraged music, dancing, painting and writing across the early years.
Zora spent her teenage chapter foreshadowing her eventual participation in burlesque with another solo activity crafted beautifully from the mind and body, performing as a decorated cross country and track athlete, breaking records and holding others to this day. Her deep appreciation for this output, mental tenacity, just the self and the body, stuck with her long after she left the track and immersed herself fully in hip hop dance. She found grounding and heaven in hip hop and had been teaching the format for years when she found burlesque and she knew: she knew she had mined the gem, a dynamite composition of effort, passion, expression and self.
A published poet, holder of a handful of intellectual property patents and a few degrees in the creative arts, Zora needles on towards creating smart, impassioned acts wrapped in costumes that speak to her tremendous love of fashion and design, reflective of her hip hop roots and the unmistakable dedication of a distance runner… It has been said that her sparkle can be seen from outer space; it has been rumored that one night in Zora’s audience will have you discovering confetti in all your places for a month on… with pasties so small, even the most veteran of show-goers blush, they come to see the tease and leave with an eyeful of feathers… she is the Girl With The Peacock Tattoo.
Jon Manning has been an internationally recognized, award-winning filmmaker for the past 32 years. From national commercials for the world’s largest corporations to theatrical documentaries such as “Lord Save Us From Your Followers” and psychological thrillers such as “House of Last Things” he brings three decades of film experience to the creation of “Burlesque: Heart of the Glitter Tribe”.

And I do believe that Miss Dee Twenty might have one of the best of them all!
The Season O’Sex is starting to wrap up, so I knew I wanted to make sure that Miss Dee came on the show to give us an insight into her world of supporting intersectional feminist issues through performance, how burlesque continually helps her discover herself and her sexuality, compartmentalizing and balancing burly life with muggle life, and tons more.

? The Seeeeeasooon O’ Seeeeex! ?
Welcome back, friends and lovers! <3
I am so excited to bring you the first episode of 2017 (though recorded LAST YEAR ) with the always-captivating Glamazon Sexpert Tyomi Morgan!
It was a blast to geek out with her over social media strategies and productivity, plus using art to create balance and how to bridge the gap between being a personal sexual being and an artistic sexual being…. and more.
Listen in below, then have a look at all the links to keep up with her on her sexpert journey!
(Don’t forget, if you’re loving BSD and the Season O’Sex, you can help out the show by joining the Posse, supporting on Patreon, sharing with your friends, and subscribing on iTunes/Android/Stitcher/Google Play/ALLTHETHINGS.)
Passionate, innovative and ambitious are just a few words to describe the model-turned-Sexpert Tyomi Morgan. Hailing from Chicago, Illinois Tyomi began her career as a model working for local designers, Musical artists and national brands and eventually landed a contending spot on America’s Next Top Model Cycle 10. The opportunity was short lived, but after leaving the show, Tyomi decided to use her influence for good. Possessing a love for all things sensual, and recognizing a lack of modern-day edge in presenting sex education, the “Glamazon” (as she is commonly known as) decided to create her own sex education blog. And this is how glamerotica101.com was born in September of 2011.
Originally created for the modern lady, Glamerotica101.com is inspired by the women across who’ve been left heartbroken and unsatisfied sexually. After receiving an overwhelming response from men who desired to improve their sex lives, Tyomi extended her knowledge to both sexes. Over the course of 5 years, Tyomi has launched a Youtube channel that reaches lovers worldwide, bringing in 1.4 million views monthly, and has appeared on several radio shows and podcasts including Naomi Banxxx’s Chocolate Radio, Playboy Radio with Maya Jordan, Chicago’s 107.5 WGCI, Chicago’s B96 and many others. She has been featured as a favorite Sexpert on Comedy’s Central’s popular sketch comedy show “Tosh.0” and her blog has been referred to as a “go to source” for sex positioning and sex advice for the woman of color by activist and writer Feminista Jones.
Tyomi currently serves as the resident Sexpert and a contributing writer for Ebony.com and EBONY Magazine, contributing writer for Blackdoctor.org, and is currently a host on Playboyradio.com with her own podcast “Glamazon Tyomi’s Sex Academy”. She is also a contributing writer for “The Guardian UK”, Elitedaily.com and is quoted for several sex positive platforms across the internet including Yourtango.com, Askmen.com, Dailymail.com UK and others. Tyomi is an active member of the National Coalition for Sexual Health and is currently working on her certification as a Sexuality Coach through the World Association of Sex Coaches while working with clients one on one to help them move towards their desired improvement within their relationships.

Episode in
Burlesque Stripped Down Podcast
Trigger warnings: sexual assault/trauma, rape/rape play, 2016 election
Welcome back into the Season O’Sex! Despite some distressing political news this week, I’m excited to share with you all a fabulous and inspiring conversation I had recently with Virginia Dare Me.
Listen in below, then have a look at all the links to keep up with her on her burlesque and music journeys!
(Don’t forget, if you’re loving BSD and the Season O’Sex, you can help out the show by joining the Posse, supporting on Patreon, sharing with your friends, and subscribing on iTunes/Android/Stitcher/Google Play/ALLTHETHINGS.)
Raised in the Blue Ridge Hills of her namesake, Virginia Dare Me is new to Burlesque, but not to the stage. She’s always been at home under the lights – from her first singing performance at the age of 5 to her current international touring career as co-front person for the band Wild Ponies. When Virginia takes the stage, she comes alive with a magnetic presence that dares you to look away.
Virginia began her burlesque journey in early 2015, taking classes at Delinquent Debutantes in her current home of Nashville, TN. She was overtaken with a sense of giddy excitement and power the first moment she walked into the Burlesque studio. Virginia grabbed hold of the thrill of choreography, costuming, and concept development, and performed her burlesque debut to one of her own songs, Make You Mine, about the sexual empowerment of women. Pulling songs and inspiration for her dance mostly from other independent or East Nashville artists, Virginia continues to choreograph and create, elegantly adding “burlesque performer” to her resume.

In the US, Election Day is right around the corner.
It’s vital that we all get out and vote!
You probably know who you’re voting for in the presidential race, but have you researched the rest of your state and local ballot?
In California, one important element on the down ballot is Proposition 60.
Prop 60: the California Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act.
A sweet little name for a bill that has the potential to do a tremendous amount of damage to the porn industry in California, put thousands of workers out of business, and set a dangerous precedent for countless other industries/states/countries.
Andre Shakti (link NSFW) popped on the phone with me to discuss the fight against prop 60. Andre is a journalist, educator, performer, activist, and professional slut living in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is devoted to normalizing alternative desires, de-stigmatizing sex workers and their clients, and not taking herself too seriously. Andre wrestles mediocre white men into submission and writes about sex work, queerness and non-monogamy for Cosmopolitan, Thrillist, MEL, Vice, and more. She can frequently be found marathoning Law & Order: SVU under a chaotic pile of partners and pitbulls, and yes, she knows how problematic that show is.
Look for Andre to hop on BSD again in the near future to chat happier things, like her journey and AFOGs and all things burlesque!
For now, we get into some of the details of why prop 60 is so dangerous. Listen below, check out the links for more info or to donate, then SHARE the info with everyone you know who lives in California!

Here’s hoping that when we next talk the world won’t have gone to shit!
Until then, amazing activists-
