Episode #188: Helpful Equations To Connect with and Support Kids: An interview with Sonali Vongchusiri

All of us have the same values, these are to be seen, heard, understood and to be appreciated and know we belong. What are your needs? How much time do you give to look after you? Do you find you give so much to your kids, that you find yourself overwhelmed when you try to connect? In this episode Janine and Sonali speak about: What does it mean to be a highly sensitive parent How to enjoy your relationship with your kids How to think about what your needs are and how to bring them alongside your kids needs Sonali’s Connection Equations What Sonali does to rest and relax About The Guest - Sonali Vongchusiri Sonali is a highly-sensitive mom, with three deeply-feeling and strong-willed kids. It took a whole lot of time to see that just because her kids didn't respond to parenting methods the way experts said they would, and just because her family didn't fit society's ideal of a "perfect family," she wasn't a bad mom and she wasn't raising spoiled, snowflake kids. In fact, now she knows for sure, that they rock! So she’s your sensitivity, needs and regulation go-to-gal. And, she also happens to be legally blind and have albinism. When she finally realized she didn’t need to “fit in” to “belong”, it gave her permission to find her own way. And now she supports others in doing the same. Her work is dedicated to sharing with parents how it's possible to have fun with sensitive kids and to raise them to be kind and compassionate. Because she gets it - both from being THAT kid, and from having THOSE kids. Website: www.forwardtogetherparenting.com Facebook Group Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/raisingyourstrongwilledchild Sonali is offering a free gift called “The Parent's Guide to Tackling Tech Troubles” available at: www.forwardtogetherparenting.com/tech_resource Discover what your child needs to come off technology the first time you ask them to Unlock why “the negotiator” child relentlessly asks for MORE and how you can eliminate incessant asking and energy consuming discussions. Transform your perspective on what’s going on with the battles around tech and uncover a new healthy relationship with tech for your child that will support them into adulthood About The Host - Janine Halloran Janine Halloran is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, an author, a speaker, an entrepreneur and a mom. Lessons Learned from Stardew Valley

Sometimes it's some of the simple things in your day to day like a game you like to play that remind you of a few strategies and values in life that are helpful to keep you going.  In this episode, Janine speaks about the game Stardew Valley and the reminders of life lessons that she holds and was reminded of from playing this video game. She speaks about: Building up Resilience  You have to practice to get better at something. The importance of keep going, recognise your strengths but still keep practicing.  It’s okay if you fail in the process and you can always try again.  If you miss a goal that’s been set, isn’t the end of the world  There’s always a chance to have another go at it if you miss the chance or don’t get it quite right the first time around  Have connection moments with others while you’re live so you don’t miss the moment and can gain skills or new experience from sharing with others  Schedule your play and downtime  Rest is important. Guard it. Make sure work doesn’t interfere with this time. Book in the hangouts with friends, exercise and keep those non-negotiables in this time.  Resources Mentioned in the podcast: Want to play Stardew Valley? https://www.stardewvalley.net/ Coping Skills for Adults Survey: https://copingskillsforkids.com/coping-skills-for-adults And remember, do not forget about yourself, take a few minutes for you and have a little fun! — About The Host - Janine Halloran Janine Halloran is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, an author, a speaker, an entrepreneur and a mom. I’m excited to share that I’ve recently recorded and launched the audiobook version of the Coping Skills for Teens Workbook.
