En la primavera de 1967, dos años antes de la celebración de Woodstock, Alan Pariser un angelino pirrado por el jazz, inspirado por el Jazz Festival de Monterey en California, se le ocurrió montar un festival de música, el Monterey Festival Music Love and Flowers. Pariser, se asoció con unos cuantas figuras del mundo musical. Promotores de conciertos, el manager de Jefferson Airplane, se apuntaron otros que pusieron dinero como Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Donovan, Smokey Robinson, Brian Wilson y algunos más y alquilaron el Monterey County Fairgroundd, el recinto ferial de Monterey, para organizar tres días de conciertos, desde el viernes 16 al 19 de julio de 1967. Fue el primer festival musical, antes de Woodstock en 1969. Programa dedicado íntegramente a The Zombies. Banda menos reconocida de lo que merecen y que se han mantenido unidos durante décadas. Su último disco Odessey and Oracle, publicado por CBS, se grabó en los estudios de Abbey Road, en el que acababan de grabar The Beatles Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Zombies, sin compañía discográfica, se hicieron cargo de los gastos de producción. La portada del disco, realizada por Terry Quirk, la hizo sentado en el estudio 3 de Abbey Road. Mientras dibujaba, en la funda de un viejo disco apareció la palabra Odessey y luego Oracle. Así se llamó. Odessey con E y no con Y griega. No se dieron cuenta del error hasta que ya se iba a poner a la venta.
