Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: Dàji?h?o! Xiànzài w?men k?ish? xuéhàny?. W?shì ML.
S: Péngyoumen, n?menh?o! W?shì Stuart.
M: Last lesson we’ve learned qíngti?n, sunny day, xiày?, to rain, xiày?. Xiàxu?, to snow, xiàxu?. And gu?dàf?ng, to blow heavily, gu?dàf?ng. Qíngti?n, xiày?, xiàxu?, and gu?dàf?ng.
S: And the ti?nqìyùbào, the weather forecast, ti?nqìyùbào, was right. It snowed this morning, and now it’s quite gloomy and really windy. J?nti?n z?ochén xiàxu?le, xiànzài ti?n h?n y?n, hái gu?dàf?ng. ML, I don’t feel … very well today.
M: Sure, I can see that. How do you feel now?
S: W? tóuténg, hóulong y?téng, hái f?sh?o. I have a headache, a sore throat, and a fever. ????????????.
M: Did you take medicine? ?????N? ch?yàole ma?
S: Not yet. Méine! And after work I’m going to the hospital and see a doctor. W? xiàb?nhòu qùyi?yuàn kàny?sh?ng.
M: It’s very gloomy and windy today. ?????????Ti?n h?n y?n, hái gu? dà f?ng?Y?n, YIN, first tone, means gloomy, or cloudy, y?n.
S: So no way I can get some sun, shàitàiyáng, shài tàiyáng.
M: Without sunshine, poor Stuart has a headache, a sore throat, and a fever. ???????????? T? tóuténg, hóulong y?téng, hái f?sh?o.
S: Right. W? tóuténg, hóulong y?téng, hái f?sh?o.
M: Tóuténg. Tóu TOU head, tóu. Téng, TENG, téng, second tone, means to ache. And hóulong, HOU LONG, hóulong, means ‘throat’. So tóuténg means ‘headache’, tóuténg; while hóulong téng mean ‘throat-ache’, or a ‘sore throat’, hóulong téng.
S: So how do we say, “my arm aches” in Chinese? A clue. ‘Arm’ in Chinese is ?? g?bo.
M: F?ich?ngh?o! ????? W?de g?bo téng.
S: Moreover, ???? I also have a fever. W?hái f?sh?o.
M: Stuart, did you take any medicine? N? ch?yàole ma? Ch?, to eat. Yào, medicine, yào. Ch?yào, eat medicine, to take medicine. Now you people at home say ‘did you take any medicine’ in Chinese. H?nh?o, ??????N? ch?yàole ma?
S: Méine! W? xiàb?nhòu qùy?yuàn kàny?sh?ng. After work I’m going to the hospital and see a doctor.
M: Y?yuàn, YI YUAN, y?yuàn, first tone fourth tone, hospital. And y?sh?ng, YI SHENG, y?sh?ng, doctor.
S: And we learnt ages ago that xiàb?n means get off work, and ‘hòu means after. So the whole sentence is, ?????????? W? xiàb?nhòu qùy?yuàn kàny?sh?ng.
M: Ok, now let's go over the stuff we learnt today. Ready? ???????
S: J?nti?nz?ochén xiàxu?le, xiànzài ti?n h?ny?n, hái gu?dàf?ng.W? tóuténg, hóulong y?téng, hái f?sh?o.
M: Poor Stuart! N? ch?yàole ma? N? ch?yàole ma?
S: Méine! W? xiàb?nhòu qùy?yuàn kàny?sh?ng. W? xiàb?nhòu qùy?yuàn kàny?sh?ng.

Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: Dàji?h?o! w?shì ML.
S: N?men h?o! W?shì Stuart.
M: Hey, Stuart, you look much better today! Stuart, ?????????!
S: That's because I followed the doctor's advice. I took medicine on time, drank a lot of water every day, and had a very good rest for a couple of days. ??????????????????????. W? ànshí ch?yào, m?iti?n h? h?ndu? shu?, bìngqi? h?oh?o x?uxi le j?ti?n.
M: That's good.
S: And the doctor also advised me to do more exercises. Y?sh?ng hái jiànyìw? du?zuò duànliàn. He said, walking, jogging, and playing tennis are all suitable sports for me. ????????????????????. T?shu?, z?ulù, p?obù, hé d?w?ngqíu d?ushì shìhé w?de yùndòng.
M: Hmm, great doctor! I think he's absolutely right. You DO need to lose weight! N? shì x?yào ji?nféi le.
S: Hèng!
S: Wow, that's a lot of new stuff! Let's look at it.
M: I said, ‘Stuart, you look much better today!' Stuart, ??????????
S: ‘H?odu?le' means ‘much better'. We've learnt in previous lessons about how to make comparison. And here ‘h?odu?le' is one of the ways to express that one thing is far… than another.
M: And kànq?lái, KAN QI LAI, kànq?lái, means look, as in look well, look awkward, look ill, or whatever. Kànq?lái. It's a fixed pattern in Chinese. So the whole sentence is, Stuart, ????????????????????
S: Because I followed the doctor's advice, ?? JIAN YI jiànyì, advice, suggestion. I took medicine punctually/on time w? ànshí ch?yào, drank a lot of water every day m?iti?n h? h?n du? shu?, and had a very good rest for a couple of days. bìngqi? h?oh?o x?uxi le j?ti?n.
M: W? ànshí ch?yào. ???AN SHI, fourth tone second tone, ??, means on time, punctually. And x?uxi, XIU XI, to rest, x?uxi. ?????to have a good rest, ?????
S: And we've learnt that ch?yào means to take medicine, and to drink water is ???So now you guys at home, repeat the whole sentence with ML again.
M: W? ànshí ch?yào, m?iti?n h? h?ndu? shu?, bìngqi? h?oh?o x?uxi le j?ti?n. W? ànshí ch?yào, m?iti?n h? h?ndu? shu?, bìngqi? h?oh?o x?uxi le j?ti?n.
M: ??remember, is ‘advise'. So now say, The doctor gave Stuart some more advice, which was?
S: Méicuò. Y?sh?ng hái jiànyìw? du?zuò duànliàn. Y?sh?ng hái jiànyìw? du?zuò duànliàn.
M: The doctor also asked Stuart to do more exercise, ????. ???DUAN LIAN, both in fourth tone, mean ‘exercise'. He said, walking, jogging, and playing tennis are all suitable sports for Stuart. T?shu?, z?ulù, p?obù, hé d?w?ngqíu d?ushì shìhé Stuart de yùndòng.
S: What does all that mean? Let's find out next lesson. Don't forget to review what we learnt today, and try to read out loud everything, very important. Míngti?njiàn!

Lesson 144 Weather Report
Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: Péngy?umen, dàji?h?o! ????Learn Chinese Now, ??ML.
S: Dàji?h?o! W?shì Stuart. Today is a revision lesson, ????
M: But before we ???we've still got something left from the last lesson.
S: In the last lesson I said, y?sh?ng hái jiànyìw? du?zuò duànliàn. The doctor also advised me to do more exercise. He said, walking, jogging, and playing tennis are all suitable sports for me. T?shu?, z?ulù, p?obù, hé d?w?ngqíu d?ushì shìhé w?de yùndòng.
S: z?ulù, walking, ??.
M:???jogging, p?obù.
S: And playing tennis, d?w?ngqíu, ???.
M: Remember the word ?? We met it in ??? to ‘make a phone call'. But as we said, the word originally means ‘to hit' or ‘to beat'.
S: And in Chinese we ‘hit' any kind of ball game, rather than play it.
M: Right. So ‘playing tennis' is ??? in Chinese. Tennis is ???w?ngqíu.
S: So, if ‘lánqíu' is ‘basketball', how do we say ‘playing basketball' in Chinese?
M: Duìle, ????d? lánqíu.
S: Back to our text. z?ulù, p?obù, hé d?w?ngqíu, they are all suitable sports for me. T?men d?ushì shìhé w?de yùndòng.
M: ???SHI HE, fourth tone second tone, suitable, suitable for. Shì hé. ????suitable for me, shìhé w?.
S: T?men d?ushì shìhé w?de yùndòng. T?men d?ushì shìhé w?de yùndòng.
S: Ok! Now let's go over what we learnt in the past week.
M: Since it's been non-stop rain these few days, ????????, poor Stuart caught a cold. ?????
S: Ur, the weather's getting colder and colder. Ti?nqì biànde yuèláiyuè l?ngle. I hope tomorrow will be a sunny day so I can get some sunshine. W? x?wàng míngti?n shìge dàqíngti?n, zhèyàng w?jìu k?yì shàitàiyángle. ??, BIAN DE, to change; or here, getting.
M: ??????????????????????But the weather report said tomorrow it will snow, and perhaps be quite windy!
S: Oh, no!
M: Too bad! Stuart seemed even worse!
S: Yes. I have a headache, a sore throat, and a fever. W? tóuténg, hóulong y? téng, hái f?sh?o. ????????????.
M: ??????
S: Méine! W? xiàb?nhòu qùy?yuàn kàny?sh?ng. W? xiàb?nhòu qùy?yuàn kàny?sh?ng.
M: Obviously the medicine was effective. Stuart recovered very quickly. Hey, Stuart, ????????You look much better today.
S: D?ngrán. W? ànshí ch?yào, m?iti?n h? h?ndu? shu?, bìngqi? h?oh?o x?uxi le j?ti?n. W? ànshí ch?yào, m?iti?n h? h?ndu? shu?, bìngqi? h?oh?o x?uxi le j?ti?n.
M: That's good.
S: Besides, y?sh?ng hái jiànyìw? du?zuò duànliàn. T?shu?, z?ulù, p?obù, hé d?w?ngqíu d?ushì shìhé w? de yùndòng.
M: Humm, I can't agree more – you DO need to lose weight, Stuart!
S: Heng! I'm going to aerobics right now.
M: So we'll see you next lesson. Zàijiàn!
S: Zàijiàn!

Lesson 145 Tomorrow Is My Birthday.
Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: Péngyoumen h?o! ?????
S: Dàji?h?o, w?shì Stuart. ML, you look really excited today. What's happening?
M: Tomorrow is my birthday. ????????
S: Oh, I didn't know a bit. Happy birthday, sh?ngrì kuàilè, ML!
M: Thank you, Stuart. My family sent me beautiful cards. And my friends told me they would hold a birthday party for me tomorrow evening! ??????????????????????????????????????
S: How nice!
M: And Stuart, would you come and join my birthday party?
S: I would love to if I have time! But first, let's look at the new stuff in this lesson.
M: I said, ‘tomorrow is my birthday'. ???????????SHENG RI, first tone fourth tone, sh?ngrì, birthday. Remember the ‘rì', which means ‘day'? We learnt it before in ‘x?ngq?rì', Sunday.
S: Learning that tomorrow is ML's ‘sh?ngrì', I said, ‘sh?ngrì kuàilè!' Happy birthday! Sh?ngrì kuàilè. I bet you've guessed what ‘kuàilè' means here…Duìle, happy, kuàilè, KUAI LE, both fourth tone, kuàilè.
M: So, if new is ‘x?n' and year is ‘nián', new year is ‘x?nnián', how do we say ‘happy new year' in Chinese?
S: Did you say ‘x?nnián kuàilè', ‘x?nnián kuàilè'? You did?Congratulations! ????? you've won a break.
S: Break's over! Let's continue learning the rest new stuff.
M: I told Stuart, ?????????????My family sent me beautiful cards. ?????????????
S: Jì, send by post or email, jì. Out of interest, if you are the receiver, you usually use ‘jìlái', as in this sentence. Remember, ?means to come. But if you are the one to send things out, you often use ‘jìqù' or ‘jìz?u'. The ‘qù' and ‘z?u' both mean ‘to go'.
M: Ji?rén, family, family members, ji?rén. Piàoliang, PIAO LIANG, beautiful or pretty, piàoliang. And ‘??', KA PIAN, third tone fourth tone, k?piàn, is card.
S: So, t?de ji?rén jìláile piàoliangde k?piàn. Once again. T?de ji?rén jìláile piàoliangde k?piàn.
M: What's more, my friends told me, ?????????they would hold a birthday party for me tomorrow evening! ????????????????
S: Wèi, WEI, fourth tone, means ‘for'. Wèi w?, for me. In English we say, ‘do sth. for sb.', but in Chinese people always say ‘for sb. do sth.'. Wèiw? j?xíng sh?ngrì yànhuì.
M: Still remember the word ‘j?xíng', ??? Right, it means to hold a meeting, party, or whatever. And ‘party' in Chinese is ‘yànhuì', YAN HUI, both fourth tone, yànhuì. So ‘birthday party' is ‘sh?ngrì yànhuì', ‘sh?ngrì yànhuì'.
S: And ML kindly invited me to her birthday party. Hmm, I'll try my best, though I'm really busy these days. But now I'm to get off work – xiàb?n, and find a gift for her. See you tomorrow!

Lesson 146 My Birthday Party
Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: Dàji?h?o! Hu?nyíngsh?ut?ng xiànzài xuéhàny?, w?shì ML.
S: W?shì Stuart. Lesson 146 today!
M: Right! Today I'm going to enjoy my birthday party, ???????
S: Ur – ML, I'm so sorry…but I'm afraid that I can't join your birthday party. Duìbùq?, ML, w? k?ngpà bùnéng c?nji? n?de sh?ngrìyànhuìle. ??????????????.
M: But why? ???? Wèi shénme?
S: Because my uncle and aunt are arriving in Beijing today. They came all the way from New York. ??????????????. w?de g? fu hé g? m? j?nti?n dàob?ij?ng. T?men cóng n?uyu? lái.
M: Oh, I see.
S: Oh, I almost forgot! W? chàdi?n wàngle. Look, I bought a gift for you. W? m?ile yíge l?wù g?in?. Happy birthday, ML!
M: Thank you, Stuart! Thank you so much!
S: Ok, let's look at the new stuff. I said, Duìbùq?, ML, w? k?ngpà bùnéng c?nji? n?de sh?ngrì yànhuìle. Duìbùq?, ML, w? k?ngpà bùnéng c?nji? n?de sh?ngrì yànhuìle.
M: Duìbùq?, duìbùq?, we've learnt, means "sorry". ???KONG PA, third tone fourth tone, k?ngpà, means ‘to be afraid'.
S: And since ‘néng' means ‘can', néng, can you guess what ‘bùnéng' means? Simple! Cannot, bùnéng, bùnéng.
M: And the last new word in this sentence is ‘c?nji?', CAN JIA, both first tone, means to take part in, to attend. So the whole sentence is –
S: ML, w? k?ngpà bùnéng c?nji? n?de sh?ngrì yànhuìle. W? k?ngpà bùnéng c?nji? n?de sh?ngrì yànhuìle.
M: Stuart bùnéng c?nji? w?de sh?ngrì yànhuìle. T? bùnéng c?nji? w?de sh?ngrì yànhuìle. Why? Wèishénme? Wèishénme?
S: Because, my uncle and aunt are arriving in Beijing today. Y?nwéi w?de g?fu hé g?m? j?nti?n dàob?ij?ng. w?de g?fu hé g?m? j?nti?n dàob?ij?ng.
M: G?m?, GU MA, both first tone, g?m?, father's sister. G?m?. And g?fu, GU FU, g?fu, is g?m?'s husband. We know in English we simply call them aunt and uncle, however, in Chinese, we have the names all different for calling father's sisters and brothers, and mother's sisters and brothers. We'll explain bit by bit in our following lessons.
S: My aunt and uncle came all the way from New York. W?de g?m? hé g?fu cóng n?uyu?lái. W?de g?m? hé g?fu cóng n?uyu?lái. N?uyu?, NIU YUE, third tone first tone, n?uyu?, New York.
M: ?????to come from New York, cóng n?uyu? lái. Notice the cóng somewhere lái pattern is very useful, which means to come from somewhere. For example, I came from Beijing. ????????????
S: T? cóng shàngh?i lái. He came from Shanghai. T? cóng shàngh?i lái.
M: And, they came from New York. T?men cóng n?uyu? lái.
S: Ah, ML, I almost forgot! W? chàdi?n wàngle. Look, I bought a gift for you.
M: ???forgot, ???And ‘to forget' is simply ??WANG, fourth tone, wàng. chàdi?n, almost, chàdi?n. W? chàdi?n wàngle. I almost forgot. W? chàdi?n wàngle.
S: W? m?ile yíge l?wù g?in?. I bought a gift for you. L?wù, LI WU, third tone fourth tone, l?wù, gift. And g?in? here means ‘for you'. The whole sentence again. ML, w? chàdi?n wàngle. W? m?ile yíge l?wù g?in?. w? chàdi?n wàngle. W? m?ile yíge l?wù g?in?.
M: And what is it? Let's find out the next lesson. Zàijiàn!

Lesson 147 By the Way…
Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: Dàji?h?o! Hu?nyíng sh?ut?ng xiànzài xuéhàny?, w?shì ML.
S: Dàji?h?o! W?shì Stuart. Lesson 147 today.
M: In this lesson I'll see what gift Stuart gave me for my birthday. And of course, we'll learn a few new things.
S: ML, I hope you like the gift. X?wàng n? x?hu?n zhège l?wù.
M: Let me see… A radio! ??????Thank you, Stuart!
S: You are welcome! Haha! Now she has to listen to all my programs everyday! Oh, ML, I must go now. W? d?i z?ule. ?????
M: OK. By the way, how long will your uncle and aunt stay? ??????????????????Shùnbiàn wènyíxià, n?de g?fu he g?m? yào d?i du?j?u?
S: Two months. ????
M: Now the new stuff. Stuart said –
S: I hope you like the gift. X?wàng n? x?hu?n zhège l?wù.
M: L?wù, we've learnt, means gift; and x?wàng means to hope. So x?wàng n? x?hu?n zhège l?wù, literally, hope you like this gift, almost the same as we put it in English. Now repeat the sentence with me, x?wàng n? x?hu?n zhège l?wù. X?wàng n? x?hu?n zhège l?wù.
S: And how do we say ‘radio' in Chinese? Duìle, sh?uy?nj?, radio, sh?uy?nj?. Out of interest, sh?u means ‘to receive', y?n means sound, and j? means machine. Put them together and we get a ‘sound-receiving machine', a sh?uy?nj?.
M: And did you hear the measure word for ‘???'? Yes, it's gè. So we say yígè sh?uy?nj?, one radio, li?nggè sh?uy?nj?, two radios, etc.
M: Now listen to this carefully, very useful sentence. ??????????????????
S: Shùnbiàn wènyíxià, by the way, shùnbiàn wènyíxià. This phrase is widely used in daily life. So you must bear it in your mind. Now repeat it again with ML.
M: Shùnbiàn wènyíxià, shùnbiàn wènyíxià. ??????????????????
S: Hear the word ‘d?i'? It can be a verb. And in colloquial Chinese, it means to stay. But be careful, when you use it as an adjective, it means dull or idiotic.
M: And ‘du?j?u', DUO JIU, du?j?u, first tone third tone, is ‘how long'. The du? is the same du? as in du?sh?o, how many or how much, du?sh?o. And the ‘j?u' alone means a long period. So du?j?u together mean ‘how long'. ????????????Literally, your uncle and aunt will stay how long? How long will your uncle and aunt stay?
S: Li?ngge yuè. Two months. Li?ngge yuè.
M: Notice the measure word for yuè is ‘gè'. When we talk about the number of months, we simply put the number, the measure word, and ‘yuè' together. For example, three months is ‘s?nge yuè', s?nge yuè.
S: So, to end our lesson today, how do we say twelve months?
M: Duìle, shí’èrge yuè, shíèrge yuè.
S: Next lesson, we'll review the stuff we learnt this week, plus a few new things. So see you then!
M: Bye bye.

Lesson 139 I’ll Climb Mount Everest!
Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: ???! ?????
S: ??????Stuart. Lesson 139 today. Dì yìb?ièrshís?n kè
M: Last lesson we were excited about going traveling. So, Stuart, where do you want to go? ??????n? xi?ng qù n?r?
S: Let me have a look at the guide book. ?????????Ràng w? kànkan l?yóu zh?nán.
M: Ok.
S: Uh, where shall I go first?
M: How about the Tàihú Lake?Tàihú z?nmeyàng? It’s a very famous scenic spot in China. Or, ???perhaps the West Lake, ???x?hú in Hangzhou City?
S: Aha! Here’s the place I’d like to visit first – ???Tibet! W? yào xi?n qù x?zàng. Maybe I’ll climb Mount Everest! ????????????W? hái yào d?ngshang Zh?mùl?ngm?f?ng d?ng.
M: That’s ambitious!
S: You bet!
M: OK, now the new stuff. At first Stuart had no idea about where to go, so he said –
S: Ràng w? kànkan l?yóu zh?nán. Ràng w? kànkan l?yóu zh?nán.
M: l?yóu, we’ve learnt, means to travel. And zh?nán, ZHI NAN, third tone second tone, zh?nán, literally means ‘point south’. But now it usually means ‘guidance’ or ‘instruction’.
S: So, ‘l?yóu zh?nán’ means ‘Tour Guide’, or ‘guide book’, very useful.
M: Tàihú Lake, tàihú, is one of China’s well-known scenic spots.
M: I also recommended the West Lake, ???XI HU, x?hú. We’ve learnt that x? means ‘west’. So I’m sure you can easily guess what ‘hú’ means. Duì le, hú, lake, ??And x?hú is a very famous scenic spot in east China’s city of Hangzhou.
S: But, despite ML’s recommendation, I decided to go to X?zàng, Tibet, X?zàng, where Mount Everest is.
M: And Stuart says he’ll climb to the top of it! He’s just boasting, ???chu?niú.
S: No, ML, I’m serious! W? yào d?ngshang Zh?mùl?ngm?f?ng d?ng.
M: In Chinese, we call Mount Everest ‘?????’, Zh?mùl?ngm?f?ng. ??DENG, d?ng1, first tone, means ‘to climb’. And ??DING, third tone, means ‘top’. So the whole sentence is –
S: W? yào d?ngshang Zh?mùl?ngm?f?ng d?ng.
Everybody say with ML.
M: W? yào d?ngshang Zh?mùl?ngm?f?ng d?ng. W? yào d?ngshang Zh?mùl?ngm?f?ng d?ng. H?n h?o.
S: Now let’s go over the conversation again. And you people at home please repeat with us as loudly as you can. Don’t be shy. OK, let’s start.
M: Stuart, ??????n? xi?ng qù n?r?
S: Ràng w? kànkan l?yóu zh?nán. ?????????
M: Tàihú z?nmeyàng? ?????
S: W? yào xi?n qù x?zàng. W? yào xi?n qù x?zàng. W? hái yào d?ngshang Zh?mùl?ngm?f?ng d?ng. ????????????
M: In that case, good-bye and good luck, Stuart! ’Cause I’m not climbing Mt. Everest!
S: Ok, it’ll be my solo climb to the top of Zh?mùl?ngm?f?ng d?ng. Who needs ML! Guys, bye for now, and don’t forget to practice at home!

Chinese Studio
M: Péngy?umen, n?men h?o! ???????????????
S: Dàji?h?o! W?shì Stuart.
M: Today is a ????and we have a lot of stuff to review.
S: So, w?men búyào làngfèi shíji?n. xiàn zài k?ish?.
M: First, we’ll go over the four seasons, ??, seasons. What are they?
S: Duìle, Spring, summer, autumn, winter: ch?nti?n, xiàti?n, q?uti?n, and d?ngti?n. Again with Manli.
M: ???????????????
S: And since now is autumn and the weather is very cool, liángkuai, cool, I decided to go traveling, l?yóu. to travel l?yóu.
M: Stuart wants to visit some scenic spots and places of interest, ????, f?ngj?ngmíngshèng. And I generously offered to be his guide, ????????.
S: D?oyóu, DAO YOU, third tone second tone, is a noun, meaning ‘guide’ or ‘tour guide’. Don’t mix it up with ‘l?yóu’, which means to travel.
M: And ‘l?yóu zh?nán’, we know is ‘Guide Book’. Zh?nán, literally means ‘pointing south’, but usually refers to directories and guide books.
S: Apart from ‘Tour Guide’ books, we also have ‘Cooking Guide’, p?ngrèn zh?nán; ‘Health Guide’, jiànk?ng zh?nán, ‘Railway Guide’, ti?lù zh?nán, etc.
M: I recommended several famous scenic spots to Stuart, including ??in Ji?ngs? province, and ??in Zhèji?ng province. However despite my recommendation, Stuart declared –
S: W?yào xi?nqù x?zàng! W?yào xi?nqù x?zàng! W? háiyào d?ngshàng zh?mùlángm? f?ngd?ng! W? háiyào d?ngshàng zh?mùlángm? f?ngd?ng!
M: Remember x?zàng? Right, it’s Tibet. And zh?mùlángm? f?ng is the famous Mount Everest, Zh?mùlángm? f?ng. Stuart is so ambitious that he wants to climb to the top. ??????????????????????
S: But ML refuses to be my guide. Humm, maybe she’s afraid of heights!

M: Hello everyone, good to meet you again in ‘Learn Chinese Now’, ?? ML.
S: ??????Stuart. Achoo! Excuse me, I must have caught a cold.
M: How come, Stuart? You were alright last time I saw you.
S: Yeah, but I walked back home when it began to rain, xiày?, to rain.
M: Poor Stuart!
S: Achoo! These few days it’s been non-stop rain! Zhèj?ti?n yìzhízài xiày?. ?????????
M: Yes, and the weather’s getting colder and colder. ??????????
S: I hope tomorrow will be a sunny day so I can get some sunshine, ?????????????????????.
M: ??????????????????????But the weather report said tomorrow it will snow, and perhaps be quite windy! ??????????????????????
S: Oh, no!
S: Ok, let’s look at the new words. I caught a cold. ???? W? g?nmào le. Because it began to xiày?, to rain, xiày?.
M: And ??????????The weather is becoming colder and colder. ???weather. L?ng, LENG, third tone, l?ng means cold. Yuèláiyuè, to become more and more sth. sth., yuèláiyuè. This is a fixed pattern in Chinese. So how do we say ‘becoming hotter and hotter’ in Chinese?
S: Duìle! Yuèláiyuè rè, yuèláiyuè rè.
M: And how to say ‘faster and faster’?
S: Méicuò. Yuèláiyuè kuài, yuèláiyuè kuài.
M: And one more. How do we say ‘more and more slowly’ in Chinese?
S: F?ichángh?o! Yuèláiyuè màn, yuèláiyuè màn.
S: Oh, w? x?wàng míngti?n shìgè dàqíngti?n, zhèyàng w?jìu k?y? shài tàiyángle.
M: x?wàng, XI WANG, first tone fourth tone, x?wàng, means to hope or wish.
S: Dà qíngti?n, qíng, QING, qíng here means sunny. Ti?n here means ‘weather’. And usually people put a ‘dà’ in front of the word when it is a VERY sunny day without a cloud in the sky.
M: And shàitàiyáng. Tàiyáng, TAI YANG, tàiyáng, means the sun. And to ‘shài’ means to expose something to sunshine. So shàitàiyáng together mean to get some sun. Shàitàiyáng.
S: But the weather report said, ti?nqìyùbào shu?, tomorrow it will snow! Míngti?n yào xiàxu?. Míngti?n yào xiàxu?.
M: Ti?nqì, the weather, ti?nqì. Yùbào, forecast, yùbào. Ti?nqìyùbào, the weather report, or the weather forecast. Ti?nqìyùbào.
S: Xiàxu?, XIA XUE, fourth tone third tone, xiàxu?, means ‘to snow’. Xià xu?. Tomorrow it will snow. Míngti?n yào xiàxu?. Míngti?n yào xiàxu?.
M: And it might be quiet windy as well. ??????????????????Gu? GUA ‘to blow’. f?ng, ‘wind’, gu?f?ng ‘to be windy’, gu?f?ng. Remember the ‘dà’ in dàqíngti?n, which stresses that the sun is really bright? Here in ‘gu?dàf?ng’ we meet the same ‘dà’, referring to a really strong wind. By the way, the ‘érqi?’ at the beginning of this sentence means ‘what’s more’, ‘in addition’.
S: Oh, dear! How do I get rid of my ‘g?nmào’, my cold?
M: ????let’s xiàkè now and give Stuart time to have a good rest. Hope you’ll be ok tomorrow, Stuart!
S: Xièxiè, ML, and see you all tomorrow, guys!
M: Zaijian!

Lesson 138 I Can Be Your Guide.
Episode in

M: ?????????
S: ???????Stuart. Now we’ll start right away.
M: Because today we’ll learn a lot of stuff. ????????????????Y?nwéi, j?nti?n w?men ji?ngyào xuéxí h?n du? d?ngxi. ???DONG XI, stuff.
S: Or things. Fine! So what are we going to learn?
M: Well, last lesson we taught our listeners ?? and ???which mean ‘summer’ and ‘autumn’. Now we’ll learn how to say ‘winter’ and ‘spring’ in Chinese.
S: ???DONG TIAN, d?ngti?n, both 1st tone, is winter. Out of interest, in Chinese there is a word ??also spelled DONG but is in the fourth tone, which means freezing.
M: And ??, CHUN TIAN, ch?nti?n, means ‘spring’.
S: So now we’ve learned all the four seasons of a year. They are –
M: Chun ti?n, spring, chun ti?n.
S: xià ti?n, summer, xià ti?n.
M: qi?ti?n, autumn, qi?ti?.
S: And d?ngti?n, winter, d?ngti?n. Hey, that seems pretty easy!
M: Last lesson Stuart told me that he had heard about, ????t?ngshu? guò, quite a few places of interest. However, he hasn’t had a chance to visit them yet.
S: That’s right. ?????????????????????W? t?ngshu? guò h?ndu? f?ngj?ngmíngshèng, dànshì yìzhí méiy?u j?huì qù.
M: F?ngj?ng míngshèng. F?ngj?ng, FENG JING, 1st tone 3rd tone, f?ngj?ng, ‘scenery’. And míngshèng, MING SHENG, míngshèng is ‘place of interest’.
S: Yìzhí, we know is ‘always’, yìzhí. So yìzhí méiy?u means ‘always not have’, or, in real English, ‘never have’.
So, ‘I never have a chance’ is ?… Duì le, w? yìzhí méiy?u j?huì. w? yìzhí méiy?u j?huì. ?? is of course ‘chance’, ‘opportunity’.
M: Right. Now here’s the whole sentence, ?????????????????????I’ve heard about many scenic spots and places of interest, but never got a chance to visit them. W? t?ngshu? guò h?ndu? f?ngj?ngmíngshèng, dànshì yìzhí méiy?u j?huì qù.

M: And I can be your guide. ????????????DAO YOU, 3rd tone 2nd tone, d?oyóu, means guide. Zuò, ZUO, zuò, 4th tone, can mean ‘do’ or ‘make’, here it means ‘be’, or ‘serve as’. ?????????W? k?y? zuò n? de d?oyóu.
S: Zhen1 de ma? Really? Zhen1 de ma? Tài h?o le! Wonderful! Great! Tài h?o le! This is a very common way expression.

S: W? shì Stuart. Our suspense story continues.
M: Remember, the bird thinks the bread is tasty h?och?.
S: The cat thinks the bird is h?och?. And, Chapter 3 begins:
M: Those two large dogs reckon the cat is very amusing, fun to play with ??? hao3 wanr2. ?????????????? nà li?ng zh? dà g?u rènwéi nà zh? m?o h?n h?o wónr.
S: Suddenly, the cat jumped. ?????????? t?rán, nà zh? m?o tiào q?lái le.

S: And then??
M: Patience. Wait for chapter 4. Now we look at the new stuff.
S: Remember from the previous lesson - nàkuài miànb?o h?och?, ?? good to eat h?och?. Well, the two big dogs thought, ?????????????
M: nà zh? m?o h?o wánr. ???? ? WAN wán ‘to play', as in play a game, not play a piano. The wán changes to wánr in h?o wánr.
S: So what does ??? mean? Duìle. Good to play, amusing, fun.
M: ?????? that cat looks like fun nà zh? m?o h?owánr.
S: And I said???????????
M: t?rán, nà zh? m?o tiào q?lái le. ?? TU RAN t? rán, 1st tone, 2nd, means 'sudden', 'suddenly' t?rán.
S: So try to say, Suddenly, they came. Méi cuò. ??????? t? rán, t?men lái le.
M: Now say, ??????It's too sudden. Nà tài t?rán le.
S: Back to our m?o, and ????
M: tiào q? lái le. ? TIAO tiào, 'to jump, leap' tiào. ??? q?lái QI LAI q?lái, means 'to get up' or 'rise'. It can be used to say, What time do you get up? ?????? Say it, n? j?di?n q?lái?
S: What does q?lái do after a verb? Listen, and you'll get the idea. ? k?, is ‘to cry'. He burst out crying, ????? say it, t? k? q?lái le.
M: ? xi?ng, 'to think'. ??????? Oh, I've thought of it! ò, w? xi?ng q? láile!

M: And I said, ??????????? ?? TONG SHI tóngshí, 'at the same time', tóngshí.
S: And ????. ? FEI f?i, 'to fly', like in flying machine, airplane, ?? f?iji.

Lesson 124 Revision of the Tale of Suspense
Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: Dàji? h?o. Hu?nyíng n?men sh?ut?ng Xiànzài Xué Hàny?. W? shì ManLi.
S: W? shì Stuart. Today it's a fùxí kè. If you can handle the tension, we'll fùxí our tale of suspense. Listen, t?ng, and repeat, chóngfù.
M: We will now read Chapters 1 thru 3.
S: On the tree is a little bird??????? shù shàng y?u yì zh? xi?o ni?o.
M: On the table there is a cat ??????? zhu?zi shàng y?u yì zh? m?o.
S: Under the chair are two big dogs ????????? y?zi xiàmian y?u li?ng zh? dà g?u.
M: The little bird sees a slice of bread, ???????????nà zh? xi?o ni?o kàn dào le y? kuài miànb?o. It thinks, that bread must be good to eat, ????????????t? xi?ng, nàkuài miànb?o yídìng h?nh?och?.
S: That cat sees the bird. It thinks, that little bird is good to eat. ????????. ??, ?????????nà zh? m?o kàn dào le xi?o ni?o. T? xi?ng, nà zh? xi?oni?o yídìng h?nh?och?
M: ?????????????????????? nà li?ng zh? dà g?u kàn dào le nà zh? m?o. T?men xi?ng, nà zh? m?o h?o wánr.
S: Suddenly, the cat jumped. ?????????? t?rán, nà zh? m?o tiào q?lái le.
M: At the same time, the little bird flew up. ??????????? tóngshí, nà zh? xi?o ni?o f?i q?lái le.
M: Some useful stuff in those three chapters. Like the easiest way to say 'on the tree' ??? zài shù shang.
S: Or 'on the table' ???? zài zhu?zi shang.
M: And for 'under the chair', we said ????? zài y?zi xiàmian. In these simple phrases we don't need to use the measure words. Remember that we usually use the measure word if we are referring to a specific thing, or a specific number.
S: For example, I see three trees ??????? w? kàn dào le s?nk? shù.
M: And if ? BA b? is the measure word for ?? chair y?zi, how do we say, We have seven chairs? Méi cuò. ??????? w?men yòu q? b? y?zi.
S: And now say, That bread is good to eat. H?n h?o. ?????? h?o ch? good to eat?h?o ch?.
M: Now say, using ??, I am really good looking. Duìle. ????? w? f?icháng h?o kàn.
S: And, to end, that cat is really fun to play with. Duìle. ??????? nà zh? m?o h?n h?o wánr.
M: Xiànzài w?men xià kè. Zài jiàn.

Lesson 125 The Cat Fell to the Ground.
Episode in
Chinese Studio
M: Dàji? h?o. Hu?nyíng sh?ut?ng Xiànzài Xué Hàny?. W? shì ManLi.
S: W? shì Stuart. Time for Chapter four of our suspense story.
M: Chapter three ended with the xi?o ni?o flying up.
S: Now, chapter four.
M: M: The cat fell to the ground. ?????????Nèi zh? m?o shu?i dàole dì shang.
S: The two big dogs ran out ??????????Nà li?ng zh? dà g?u p?ole ch? lái.
M: The cat saw the two big dogs. ???????????. It thought, oh dear, it's too dangerous here! ??????????Ti?n a, zhèl? tài w?ixi?nle.
S: What will happen? Don't miss Chapter 5, next lesson.
S: Now for the new stuff. ManLi said:
M: ?????????? SHUAI shu?i, 1st tone, means 'to fall', 'tumble', shu?i. shu?i dàole dìshang. ? DI here means 'ground'. Shu?i dàole dàshang, literally, fell to ground on. Remember, the little le at the end signifies completion. So what does 'nèi zh? m?o shu?i dàole dìshàng' mean? Duìle. The cat fell to the ground.
S: Now say, the panda fell to the ground. A clue. Panda in Chinese is 'xióngm?o', just add a 'xióng' in front of 'm?o'.
M: H?nh?o. ??????????Nàzh? xióngm?o shu?i dàole dìshang.
S: And I said, ?????????p?ole ch?lái. ?PAO p?o, means 'to run', p?o. ?? CHU LAI ch? lái, 'to come out', 'emerge'. So what does nà li?ng zh? dà g?u p?ole ch?lái mean? Méi cuò. The two big dogs ran out. Say it with me, nà li?ng zh? dà g?u p?ole ch?lái.
M: ?? can be used on its own, as in ???? he, she or it came out, t? ch? lái le.
S: Like the q?lái in 'jump up', tiào q?lái, ch?lái is often used after another verb. For example, ??????I see, w? kàn ch?láile.
M: So, '???' ?????,what is the meaning of 'shu? ch?lái'? Méi cuò. To speak out, shu? ch?lái, shu? ch?lái.
M: Now say, they ran out. H?n h?o. ??????. Again, zai4 lái yí cì, t?men p?o ch? lái le.
S: Then, ránhòu, ???????????. ??, ??????????
M: zhèl? tài w?ixi?nle. ?? WEI XIAN w?ixi?n, means 'danger', 'dangerous' w?ixi?n.
S: So, everybody cry out, 'careful! That's very dangerous. ???????! xi?ox?n, nà?h?n w?ixi?n. One more time, very loudly, xi?ox?n, nà h?n w?ixi?n.
S: Now, to finish, Chapter 4, full speed.
M: ?????????Nèi zh? m?o shu?i dàole dì shang.
S: ????????? nà li?ng zh? dà g?u p?ole ch?lái.
M: ???????????. ???"??????????" ti?n a, zhàl? tài w?ixi?nle.
S: Next lesson, chapter 5. Zài jiàn
M: Zàijiàn!
