Jonathan Chance interviews City Manager Charles R. Martin and Chamber of Commerce President Linda Payne. Temple City is about 3 square miles and rests in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. It is halfway between the 10 and 210 fwys and is about 13 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. It is a city in transition to keep growing but keep the small-town atmosphere. It is a family-friendly city that features tree-lined streets, award winning schools and a low crime rate. Temple City is home to the annual Camellia Festival and Parade which takes place in February. The city population is 35 thousand and is comprised of primarily single family homes. Temple city has a growing business environment that is comprised of both family owned and major retail businesses and is a 'no city property tax' city. Temple City was incorporated in 1960 and was founded in the 1920's by land developer Walter Temple for whom the city is named. Irwindale is a San Gabriel Valley Community with a very small residential population. The city was founded 50 years ago by the mining industry. It has a very lucrative business environment that is comprised of mining, manufacturing and high tech industry. Irwindale, which features approximately fifteen hundred residents, provide some unique services for it's residents including school busing,learning centers and prescription and vision coverage for all residents. Race car fans are attracted to the Irwindale Speedway which is the only short track raceway in Los Angeles County. NASCAR, Midget and stock car racing all take place at this facility. Located eight miles east of Los Angeles, Alhambra is often referred to as the "Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley." The city features award winning schools and their own water department that pumps water for the city from artesian wells. In addition Alhambra has their own police and fire department. Almansor Park offers Alhambra residents plenty of recreational opportunities. The park features an 18 - hole golf course, a three story driving range, a one mile walking track, baseball, softball and soccer fields. In addition, there is an athletic gym with basketball facilities as well as an area for lawn bowling. In the historic downtown area there is the Alhambra Renaissance Plaza at Main Street and Garfield which features variety of restaurants and shops as well as a 14 - screen movie theater with stadium seating. The city is connected to Downtown Los Angeles by a light rail system known as the Gold Line, which runs between L.A.'s Union Station and the San Gabriel Valley.
