Hi everyone, I am releasing this blog with my staff from the Coaches Clinic at Hope College with Sean Miller (Arizona), Steve Alford (UCLA), Steve Wojo (Duke), and Andy Enfield! (USC) This is as one of the most exciting days in Top Gun History.  Our new website has arrived! I have a brand new podcast and blog for you. Just recently we held our 4th Annual SD Fall Showcase. Let’s get into the blog.  PLEASE leave comments below and your feedback on the new site!   ——————–   One day I was browsing the internet looking at various clips on youtube when I stumbled upon a preview called “Teaching Toughness.”   Toughness is always something we wished our players had more of and is seen as integral to success.  The popular opinion on this can spiral you into a “nature vs. nurture debate.” I had been coaching at the Junior College level for 2 years at this point, but I was not familiar mostly with what was going on up North.  I was in the Southern California bubble.  However, I had heard Alex Perez from Otay Ranch, who every Division I coach on the West Coast was salivating over, was primed to go to a Junior College. I was alerted that he started off at Saddleback, but after a couple weeks decided to go all the way up to play specifically for Coach Ed Madec.  After talking to several colleagues they agreed.  They had told me Coach Madec gets the MOST out of his players regardless of talent. Back to the preview.  Within 1 minute I noticed that there something different going on but I couldn’t put my finger on it.  All I know is I had to watch more.  I ended up buying the DVD. I probably watched it over 50 times.   If you want to purchase the DVD I give it 5 stars.                           There were some great drills I had never seen, mindsets I wanted to be internalized and interactions with players were eye opening.  The short DVD had probably one of the biggest impacts on my coaching career as crazy as that might sound, because most think you can’t learn much from a simple DVD. After the DVD was released, Coach Madec won the California State Title and Alex Perez was MVP.  A year later, Coach Ed Madec released a behind the scenes look at 4 days in the program touring through the culture and 1 DVD specifically to what Coach Ed loves:  The culture of the Fresno City team in the weight room with a sense of urgency. This DVD definitely did not disappoint!  I promise you.  You will get 100 times the value of buying this DVD if you are a coach.  If you don’t I will personally refund your money.                   I then took it upon myself to give Coach a call and we struck up a conversation about life, basketball and coaching that lasted over an hour. (Shout out to Alex Perez for making the intro)  He then said he would talk to and help “cultivate” our coaches and I am excited to bring you this interview. Before we get into that I really want to pay him back with telling you about his coaching clinic.  It is October 19th at Fresno City College.  It is only $40 bucks to attend and Coach Madec sent me 2 secret DVD’s showing the previous year’s clinics.  I can assure you that this will be unlike any clinic you have been to and I have been to a TON.
