College Freedom Forum

Los venezolanos han enfrentado represión a causa de una dictadura que ha durado casi 20 años. Para este College Freedom Forum, Rodrigo Diamanti, comparte algunos de los logros así como desafíos que ha enfrentado como activista en esta dictadura, y cómo el valor de la solidaridad ha sido de gran relevancia en su experiencia. Diamanti relata cómo inició su viaje como activista después de que su abuela fuera atacada en una protesta, a partir de este suceso él decide acompañarla a las manifestaciones. Al notar que la dictadura comenzó a quitar la vida de los ciudadanos, decide luchar por la libertad de Venezuela. También revela cómo se preparó para organizar protestas pacíficas, estudiando la no violencia y a personajes como Martin Luther King y Gandhi.  El activista menciona algunos sucesos que cambiaron la historia de Venezuela, como el cierre del canal más antiguo del país por divulgar la verdad de lo que la dictadura estaba provocando en el país. Gracias a este suceso, él junto con un grupo de estudiantes forman la organización Un Mundo Sin Mordaza, que logró reunir alrededor de 40 países a la lucha por Venezuela.  Diamanti explica qué es el movimiento SOS Venezuela que nace debido a la represión de la dictadura. Este se conforma por la organización del activista y logró reunir a más de 120 ciudades que ayudaron a detener los actos del gobierno contra los ciudadanos.  Rodrigo destaca cómo luego de tener éxito con el movimiento se vió obligado a dejar el país, ya que fue detenido por el gobierno con otros presos políticos. Fue gracias a una comunidad solidaria que pudo seguir con su misión de liberar a Venezuela y luchar por los derechos humanos. Para concluir, Diamanti aconseja al público a no olvidarse de su país, señalando que ninguno está libre del peligro de una dictadura si este tipo de opresión no se erradican en Latinoamérica. También, enfatiza en la importancia de siempre solidarizarse para acabar con la represión y ataque a los derechos humanos.

Tras de vivir en un estado socialista liderado por Daniel Ortega desde el 2007, los nicaragüenses ponen en riesgo su vida para luchar por su libertad y justicia. El activista, Félix Maradiaga, comenta sobre el estado actual de Nicaragua debido a la dictadura de Daniel Ortega, y explica la necesidad de mejorar el sistema internacional para que pueda garantizar la libertad de los países. Maradiaga revela las situaciones que un defensor de los derechos humanos puede enfrentar en su lucha por la libertad. Estos al estar fuera de su país suelen estar protegidos y apoyados por entidades así como por la comunidad internacional que protege los derechos humanos. El activista comenta que a pesar de que el siglo XX históricamente fue uno de los más conflictivos por pasar por por dos guerras mundiales. También fue el siglo de la esperanza gracias a personajes como Gandhi, que peleó pacíficamente por la libertad, y al desarrollo de normas internacionales para defender a los activistas y la libertad.  Félix explica cómo ha sido la dictadura en Nicaragua, el manejo gubernamental en los últimos años, donde la familia Ortega ha sido básicamente la dueña del país. Teniendo a su esposa como vicepresidenta, a los hijos como ministros, el control del 90% de los medios de comunicación, y haber sometido a las instituciones públicas del país.  Además, Maradiaga comparte datos sobre el daño que se ha causado a los protestantes en manifestaciones pacíficas. Revela la cantidad de muertes y lesionados causados por la fuerza controlada por Ortega y crítica a la comunidad internacional, ya que esta no se encuentra preparada para manejar problemas como las dictaduras latinoamericanas.  Para concluir, Maradiaga solicita la ayuda de los individuos que tengan conocimiento de los daños que puede causar una represión. Recomienda utilizar medios e influencias para lograr actualizar las normas internacionales así como fortalecer la lucha por los derechos humanos. 

El College Freedom Forum 2020 contó con la representación de activistas de Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Bangladesh, Eritrea y Afganistán. Este un evento en el que los estudiantes universitarios tienen la oportunidad de conocer personas de todo el mundo que han sufrido graves violaciones de sus derechos humanos. Junto a ellos, artistas visuales, músicos y líderes de la sociedad civil comparten una experiencia inolvidable de desafío al poder arbitrario que oprime la libertad humana. El pasado 20 de febrero en la Universidad Francisco Marroquín de Guatemala se desarrolló College Freedom Forum, evento anual que expone las historias de activistas de todo el mundo contra la violación de derechos humanos. Una de las conferencistas internacionales invitadas fue Yoani Sánchez, bloguera cubana, que expuso la realidad de la Isla y la importancia del periodismo independiente en un régimen dictatorial. Sánchez indicó que en Cuba, el periodismo independiente lidia con detenciones arbitrarias, confiscación de medios de trabajo, amenazas y coacción contra familias. La Constitución de esta nación solo autoriza la prensa oficial, que se encuentra bajo el control directo del Estado. El país tiene una Ley Mordaza, la cual establece que los periodistas que colaboren con medios de difusión extranjeros, pueden ser encarcelado por informar contra el Estado y la economía. Así mismo las autoridades cubanas han prohibido a sus ciudadanos la administración de sitios web alojados en el extranjero. La organización Reporteros sin fronteras califica a Cuba como el país peor calificado de Latinoamérica en materia de libertad de prensa. La conferencista recalcó que el régimen castrista, en el poder desde 1959, sigue monopolizando la información bajo estrategias populistas, represión, una amplia red vigilancia y el ocultamiento de los hechos que no encajaban en el discurso oficial. Sánchez, quien es la fundadora del primer medio digital independiente de Cuba - 14 y medio - considera que se requiere apoyo internacional para denunciar la violación a los derechos humanos y apoyar a la prensa independiente de este país.

Afghanistan is a country where women are repressed because of their religion, they don’t have the same rights and opportunities as a man. The first female CEO in Afghanistan, Roya Mahboob, came to the College Freedom Forum to share her journey as an entrepreneur and express the impact that a dream can cause in a country.   Mahboob describes how education is for women in Afghanistan, how she lived with fear but never lost hope of getting an education. This gave her the courage to go to places that other women in her culture never would, like to a cybercafe where she saw a computer for the first time.  Roya commented that she was lucky to have her father, he always supported her to get the education she wanted despite the oppressive culture, and how this helped to make technology the center of her career, but, had to leave the country because of the success of her work.  Then, Mahboob explains that after achieving her dream, she had a new one, of making education available for everyone, even for those who are living in conservative countries. With this goal, she and Digital Citizen Fund have reached over 15,000 girls and women in which more than a hundred became entrepreneurs.  Roya reveals the story of how a group of Afghan girls, who were in a robotic team for an international competition, got their visas denied by Afghanistan. So, they captured the attention of a US congressman as well as the White House and achieved getting their travel documents. This public competition led to a message of hope and inspiration for a new generation of girls in Afghanistan.  She shows that this event made the Afghanistan government invest in a campus that its main focus will be on the development of a long-term ecosystem of startup businesses led by women. Also, this project will enable these professionals to work in a society where economic inclusion is a norm, proven that after years of darkness, you could be the master of your destiny.  To conclude, Mahboob emphasizes that innovation can be found anywhere, that now the new generations of Afghanistan will have something to offer to the international community, thanks to the education and connectivity that technology can bring. 

Eritrea is one of the most censored countries in the world, restricting all Eritreans to speak up for their rights and making them live in the oppression of the governmental regime. Vanessa Tsehaye, an activist and founder of the movement One Day Seyoum, came to the College Freedom Forum (CFF) to share her work and experience in the search for freedom for her natal country, Eritrea. The activist remarks that global ignorance affects countries like Eritrea and enables oppressive regimes to continue to operate undisturbed. But, with the help of solidarity and diffusing information as well as freedom movements, this can be changed. Tsehaye tells the story of her uncle, a journalist that was imprisoned because he documented the regimen crimes and expressed the truth of the situation in Eritrea. She explains the border problem between Eritrea and Ethiopia that has been used as an excuse for the government to continue with oppressive politics, making Eritrea the most censored country in the world. Then, Tsehaye reveals how she got involved in activism because she was tired of this situation in her country. She started by speaking up and founding an organization named in honor of her uncle One Day Seyoum, she explains how the organization works and uses tools to get people informed about the situation in Eritrea. The activist mentions that in 2018 the border problem between Eritrea and Ethiopia ended, but the regime is still the same. She points out that this event encouraged people to make a change, and she started to see it in her work when Eritreans and Non-Eritreans were fighting together for the cause. To conclude, Tsehaye shares her happiness to see the passion of people working together, remarking the importance of international solidarity and asks for the help of anyone who can do something to end the oppressive regime.

Jhanisse Vaca-Daza fundadora de Ríos de Pie, un movimiento de jóvenes bolivianos participó en el College Freedom Forum 2019, comentando las actividades que realizan a través de la no violencia y la creatividad, con el fin de defender la democracia de su país cooptada por los actos represivos del Gobierno de Evo Morales. En Ríos de Pie creen que no provocando la violencia es una forma positiva de reaccionar contra los atropellos del régimen autoritario de Morales quien tiene cooptado el Estado boliviano desde que asumió el poder en el 2006. "Luchamos por un país que tenga libertad y democracia, soñamos con una Bolivia que tenga un Gobierno transparente y sin corrupción, queremos un país en el que todos y todas las bolivianas tengan seguridad, se respete el medio ambiente y nuestros recursos naturales". El movimiento Ríos de Pie explica Jhanisse que se basa en la unidad, la organización y disciplina, sobre la base del humor y la creatividad, a través de la cual realizan campañas con el fin de animar a las personas para que participen de una protesta pacífica, y así enfrentar de esa manera la represión de un Gobierno que no respeta los derechos de sus ciudadanos. "Aparte de enfocarnos en el humor y en educar a la ciudadanía, el movimiento hace mucho énfasis en reclutar personas para las protestas y entrenarlas en la no violencia". Entre las muchas denuncias que hace Jhanisse está la ilegal candidatura de Morales aprobada por el Tribunal Constitucional, lo asesinatos y gran cantidad de heridos, víctimas de los cuerpos represivos, acusaciones y difamación por protestas en contra de su régimen, pérdida de la independencia de los organismos del Estado y otras más. Para concluir, hace un llamado a la comunidad internacional con el fin de que se pronuncien en contra de los atropellos y corrupción de que es víctima la población de Bolivia.

Ryan Shae, technology entrepreneur, gives a talk at the College Freedom Forum 2019, on the role that technology is playing on human organization and freedom. Shae states that society is at a crossroads of human organization, between democratic freedom and authoritarian control. On one hand, he explains, we have technologies that give more power to authoritarian governments and on the other, we have technology like social media and apps, that empower individuals to communicate and organize. "We have a choice for the future of humanity. Do we wanna live in a world that is top-down, governed by the few with the power to command and control? Or do we wanna live in a world that is bottom-up, governed by the many, with the power to self organize?" Ryan talks about our societies digital deadly sins: Surveillance Censorship Hacking Propaganda Coercion We need to make our democratizing technologies resilient to intervention; they often have some of these properties: privacy-preserving, censorship-resistant, hack-defending, decentralized and self-organizing, explains Shae. Then he describes some privacy-secure technologies for daily activities and other decentralized, self-organizing technologies; he then goes deeper into Bitcoin. "As consumers, what can we do? Use privacy tech, hack-defending tech and Bitcoin to transact”. Finally he describes actions we can take as employees and voting citizens, to decentralize the internet and a future of self-organization.

Zineb El Rhazoui shares at the College Freedom Forum 2019 the story of how she ended up threaten to death by Muslims after publishing a cartoon at the Charlie Hebdo Magazine, and reflects on the importance of freedom of speech in Muslim countries and equal rights for men and women. Zineb says, she’s called “the most protected woman in France”, since for more than four years she has been living under police protection every thay, after she spoke in Muslim media criticizing the religious regime. She describes how some terrorists came to their newspaper and killed 12 people in the name of Al-Qaeda and the protests that came afterwards, where thousands of french people manifested against terrorism and defending freedom of speech. "For me, the right to what they call blasphemy, is exactly what draws the boundaries between civilization and barbarie”. She later explains how even if the prophet is cartooned in a sympathetic way, or just pictured, this is considered something to be killed for in the Islam religion. El Rhazoui speaks on behalf of many other Islam people who hide their atheism, who are threatened for their sexual orientation, their beliefs, religion, for not using the hijab etc., who are persecuted daily. "The reality in the Muslim world is this: people like us are either killed, jailed, lashed, persecuted… and most of us, for being free, for practicing our freedom”. Then she introduces the term “Islamophobic”, as Islamic people are usually called when they emigrate to other european countries and talks about how people don’t understand the difference between criticizing ideas and criticizing people. "My right to criticize Islam must be guaranteed”. Finally she gives other examples of people who had been killed by Islamists for fighting for the rights of people, and for an Islam of enlightenment. Zineb concludes that she is lucky, despite the threats, because she lives in France and can speak. She says she doesn’t have the right to shut her mouth, while there are still people who don’t have freedom, emancipation from religion and enlightenment spirit.

Daniel Pérez periodista venezolano del Chigüire Bipolar un medio periodístico que lleva la noticia a sus lectores a través de la sátira, expone en College Freedom Forum 2019 información sobre la fuerte crisis humanitaria que está enfrentando su país. A través de un block de noticias, el Chigüire Bipolar comunica los diferentes problemas que acontecen en es país, pese a las amenazas y problemas técnicos de mala conexión de internet, colapsos eléctricos y otras dificultades que diariamente les hacen buscar nuevas estrategias para llevar la noticia a la población pues existe una fuerte censura en medios tradicionales, como son la radio, prensa escrita, TV. "Somos replicadores de información, hacemos que sea más amena, con mayor alcance para que la gente pueda acceder a ella y usamos el humor como ventana para burlar la censura, para poder decir cosas que otros medios no pueden decir porque si lo dicen los mete presos el dictador". Desnutrición, falta de transporte, migraciones masivas hacia países vecinos: Colombia, Perú, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, son problemas que a través de la la noticia humorística están siendo expuestos por Chigüire Bipolar para crear un impacto positivo en la población. Daniel advierte a la juventud sobre la importancia de no dar por sentada la democracia y de estar siempre informados sobre los temas económicos, políticos, legales, que dejaron de lado los venezolanos y que hoy afrontan esas consecuencias. During the North Korean Famine of 1990 to 1998, Grace Jo and her family had to be creative to survive; in this conference she shares her story, that is also the reality that millions of people faced during this time in North Korea, where at least 2.5 million people died from starvation, diseases and hipotermia. Grace narrates the story of both of her parents, who tried to cross the border to China to get food, but were caught and severely tortured. Her father was arrested and forced to admit the charges he was accused of; while being transported to a prison, he died for his wounds. She says, afterwards her mother made the decision to take her siblings and her to China. "It is very difficult for me to explain all the tortures, intimidation and pain we suffered from the prisons in both North Korea and China”. But the difficulties were not over. In China another journey begins for Grace and her family, because they had to hide in the mountains and run to different villages without being caught and reported to police. They were imprisoned for 13 months and then a pastor bribed officers to release them; they crossed the Tumer river and eventually after 15 months the UN rescued her family and transferred them to the United States as legal refugees. "We were finally and truly blessed with the gift of freedom, but like I said it before, that is not the case for most North Korean defectors who are trying to escape”. Then she explains what regular and serious defector cases are in that country, how they are perceived and the characteristics and consequences for both. Jo talks about her current family situation, the challenges they are still facing, and also shows her gratitude towards her mother, who’s bravery finally made them free. Finally Grace gives some great ideas on how people can get involved in the defense of human rights, help to advocate against China’s repatriation of north korean nationals and for democratic countries to take in more refugees.

Fred Bauma, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo talks about his work at LUCHA, a non-violent civil organization to promote community changes. He describes the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as a very diverse country with many valuable natural resources; however it is one of the poorest countries in the world due to corruption, miss governments and violent conflicts. This motivated Fred to found LUCHA, to mobilize people against the president, who wanted to reelect himself. Fred shares some powerful lessons he has got from his experience as an activist: first that what revolts you is a drop in the ocean, meaning there are many problems to fight in the world and the important thing is to organize with communities to defeat them. The second lesson is not to confuse the targets. "What I realized is the problem is not the individuals, the problem is the system, and the system is more complicated to defeat. To defeat systems you have to strategize”. Another important lesson Bauma shares is that you are not alone, because there are many people tired of the same situations that you and by coming together you can organize better. Later, on the fourth lesson he says: "Change has a cost. Every generation has to pay for the cost of its freedom.” Finally he says that the power belongs to the people, we are the masters of our future and have the power to change things.

Ti-Anna Wang talks about her father, Wang Bingzhang, a political prisoner currently serving 16 years of a life-sentence for his work in pro-democracy activism. Wang shares how his father decided to devote his life to fight for freedom of chinese people, after being inspired by the ideas of liberty while living in Canada as a PhD student. For twenty years, his father worked for his dream of a democratic China, he sacrificed everything, including his freedom. The past decade of my father’s imprisonment has been marked largely by heartbreak and defeat”. On June 27, 2002, he was kidnaped by chinese authorities, and had a one day trial where he was not allowed to speak. He was found guilty for espionage and terrorism and receive the sentence of life in prison. Ti-Anna was 13 years old when she first lobbied for the release of her father. Since then, she has spoken and pleaded all around the world. By speaking up for him, I’m better, my life is made richer and my perspective has being broader and for that I’m thankful”. Her family takes turns to visit Wang behind plexiglass and prison bars. The disappointment is overwhelming, and her efforts seem meaningless, she says. But she is thankful for having the opportunity to fight in the present time, and to make the small contributions to human rights. If my father can endure his suffering, and I can stand up in this stage, I know that you too can make sacrifices, confront your fears, and speak up for truth”. Ti-Anna knows she’s not alone. She looks up for the many allies of human rights movement for wisdom, inspiration and support. No sacrifice for justice is wasted. Al College Freedom Forum asisten conferencistas de diferentes partes del mundo que comparten situaciones difíciles por las que ellos han pasado o están pasando en su país respecto a al abuso de los derechos humanos. En este caso el comediante Daniel Enrique Pérez es un ciudadano venezolano que no pudo asistir por dificultades de migración en Venezuela debido a la situación política; por lo que en este vídeo él presenta una disculpa al público por su inasistencia y platica un poco de su trabajo El Chigüire Bipolar. Al comienzo se presenta un vídeo sobre la situación política que se vive en Venezuela, el cual explica la actitud del presidente del país con respecto a la problemática y como está cubriendo la situación con bailes y noticias mediocres en la televisión. El presidente maduro no ha hecho nada para resolver la situación, solo ha estado haciendo totalmente lo contrario, encuestas recientes afirman que más del 80% de los venezolanos desaprueban su administración y a este punto nos preguntamos ¿qué rayos está pensando el otro 20%?” Se presentan las diferentes problemáticas que el país enfrenta como: la peor inflación en el mundo, escasez de comida, mayor porcentaje de asesinatos, falta de medicamentos, entre otros. Pérez explica el funcionamiento de El Chigüire Bipolar, un portal de periodismo satírico que se fundó en mayo de 2008, habla sobre la crisis que atraviesa Venezuela, los resultados que ha dejado la mala administración, y cómo este proyecto utiliza la sátira para contar la realidad, en contra del humor que usa el presidente para ocultarla. Utilizamos el humor para burlar la censura y poder denunciar las cosas que están pasando en Venezuela.” Para concluir, Pérez agradeció la invitación del College Freedom Forum. In this conference of the College Freedom Forum, Wael Ghonim, an Egyptian activist, shares his experience through life that made him became a revolutionary. He mentions the things that reminded him to never give up and continue fighting so that freedom and human rights can be implemented and applied in his country. He starts his speech by sharing the time that he was most scared in his life, and how he felt when being abducted by the authorities. Then he tells his story: where he grew up and the studies he took, that contributed to his personality and view of life. "Being an outsider shaped my view of life. It made able to question authority and challenge systematic abuse use of power.” After this, he mentions the events that were shocking for him, but then turn him into an activist, so he talks about how he left a great job in Google and his "safe or normal life" to fight for freedom and human rights. He presents the ways he used social media anonymously to point out his ideas, the risks he took to make a difference, and how he claim for a protest that with the help of more movements, was developed on January 25 of 2011. I believed that people like me, who are privileged with their experience and education, has a moral responsibility to contribute back.” Then Ghonim expresses his feelings when he had to leave his country, mentions the things he learned from himself, and the situations that remind him to be a better activist. To conclude, he reads a letter and gives an inspiring message for society.

Jerry Sesanga is an author, journalist and filmmaker. He presents an excerpt of his movie The Baby Bride, which highlights how the young girls in Uganda undergone arranged marriage. His films pictures Maria, a very brilliant girl in class who performs very well, when all of the sudden she returns home and finds out her parents have accepted money to give her as a bride. Uganda culture is full of taboos, he says. He tells the story of his mother, who was a child bride and was limited with what she could do, due to lack of sexual information, education and opportunities. Later, Sesanga mentions how these issues are not spoken in his country. Films is one of the ways that I use to highlight this issues that are happening in Uganda.” Stigma keeps women silent about the issues they face, he describes how his mother didn’t tell him about the problems she faced. Men don’t really care about these situations and these barriers of silence prevent Uganda’s society from moving forward, and develops perpetuated poverty, misery, inequality and injustice. If we break the silence, we can make the difference.” The best way an entrepreneur can help his society is by breaking the silence. He talks about his work, like the publications of his two books African Girl and The Wasted Beauty, and the creation of Ullywood, where he produces authentic Ugandan stories with a different narrative and perspectives. At the age of 7, Leyla Hussein was a victim of FGM, Female Genital Mutilation, which is when the female genitalia is partially cut or totally removed and the remaining skin is sown together. In her participation in the College Freedom Forum 2018, she shares her horrible experience, some statistics, her awakening and the movement she has created to bring attention to this topic. 200 million girls and women from all over the world are at risk each year from undergo FGM, Hussein says. La nicaragüense Edipcia Dubón habla de las agresiones que recibió ella y su partido del Gobierno de Ortega quien lo declaró ilegal, los despojó arbitrariamente de su escaño parlamentario, junto a veinticinco colegas, por el delito de oposición a su régimen. Hoy soy parte de centenares de nicaragüenses que somos hostigados y difamamos por el régimen, en campañas de desprestigio de las que no soy sólo sujeto yo, sino que también pastores de la Iglesia católica, líderes políticos y de la sociedad civil". Agrega Edipcia que ha sido acusada de ser parte de una red de tráfico ilícitos, de golpistas, agentes de la CIA que quieren derrocar al régimen dictatorial que se afianzó en Nicaragua, pero que también esa condición les ha dado la energía y el compromiso para luchar por su libertad. Comenta Edipcia que hoy, además de enfrentar la represión, diversos organismos han comprobado que a raíz de los enfrentamientos ha habido gran cantidad de heridos, desaparecidos, detenciones arbitrarias, torturas, tratos crueles, inhumanos y degradantes; censuras a la prensa, formas de amedrantar, amenazas y hostigamiento para evitar la participación ciudadana. Para finalizar su exposición, Edipcia menciona las demandas de Nicaragua y pide el apoyo de los guatemaltecos para que los acompañen en su lucha por conseguir justicia, libertad y democracia.
