Episode in Comedicine
S6 - E8 - A Healthy Diet of Improv with Andrea Bucholz In this episode, Sarah gets to interview one of her dear friends and learns some things about her, like what a dietitian is and how to pronounce her last name properly! Fun! Dr. Andrea Bucholz is a registered dietitian. She has been a professor of applied nutrition at the University of Guelph since 2004.  When Andrea is not teaching, doing research and enjoying life as an academic, she is enjoying the other side of her brain with improv. She has studied, taught and performed comedic improv for the past 20+ years and she enjoys improv because it teaches us that it’s okay to take risks and fail.  She also loves to explore and learn about fun hobbies like tap dancing and how to lift fingerprints from crime scenes. Sarah has some serious troupe-envy for Andrea’s long standing improv troup, TriCity Comedy. S6 - E6 - Forcing the Plateau with Dr. Ruben Rajah

Episode in Comedicine
Forcing the Plateau with Dr. Ruben Rajah  Ruben Rajah is a comedian and doctor who embodies the concept of a global citizenry. Born in Malaysia, educated in Australia, and an American citizen for over 10 years, he is culturally comfortable everywhere and nowhere. Ruben likes to keep his medical career as a radiologist separate from his life as a comedian. We talk about what is involved with keeping your left and right brain from talking to each other and how to work 9 hours a day as a radiologist and still have energy left over to head into Manhattan to hit open mics. It was fun to find a kindred spirit who can’t keep the comedian inside of him down! S6 - E3 - Judy Has Some Feedback For You

Episode in Comedicine
Judy has some feedback for you  In this episode, we have another certified veterinary practice manager and improv afficianado, Judith Asséo. (But you can call her Judy.) Judy has a life long love of helping animals and people, which has led to a career in veterinary medicine. She is currently the Senior Director of Operations at Western Veterinary Partners. At the same time, she has been an improv performer for over 30 years and performs regularly in San Francisco as part of the Secret Improv Society. How much has improv influenced her career managing people? A lot? Are veterinarians challenging to work with as a group? Maybe. Are veterinary specialists special, but maybe not in a good way? I think we are. I loved meeting Judy and I know you will too. She is like a hot cup of tea on a cold day.    Links  https://secretimprov.com/    https://www.linkedin.com/in/judith-asséo-cvpm-a3aa5613/    We would like to thank our title sponsor for season 6, CoVet. Gold Comedy is,the comedy school, professional network, and content studio where women and non-binary folks grow their comedy careers. I know what you are thinking, but is she a doctor? Nope. She is not a health care professional. We broke the rules on this episode because Sarah just really wanted to have her on the show. We are dipping our toes into the world of other professions that do comedy. Lynn is an award-winning journalist and novelist. She is the author of six humorous fiction and non-fiction books, including Death By Chick Lit and Breakup Girl to the Rescue! Her writing on gender, culture, and a range of social issues—has appeared in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Salon, Glamour, national newspapers, magazines, and anthologies. Episode in Comedicine
The Power of “I Hear You” with Drew Merit  Andrew (Drew) Merit is a lot of things! He is a therapist, executive director, improviser, illustrator, musican, coach and graphic facilitator. He is currently completing his MA and he is an intern therapist at the Community Institute for Psychotherapy in San Rafael and he is the executive director if Improv Marin, where he teaches and performs improv and has developed specialized programs that bring improv to seniors and to mental health and rehabilitation treatment centres. Drew coaches improv with a tools based, rather than a rules based approach, which Sarah finds SO COOL!! S5 Kenvitational Compilation

Episode in Comedicine
Another season of Comedicine has come to a close! I want to sincerely thank all of our wonderful guests from season 5. It is wonderful to have you as part of our Comedicine community! As is now our tradition, this is just a tiny episode-let, a mini-epi, with a compilation of our guests’ invitations, pleas, requests and demands to Ken Jeong to be a guest on Comedicine. And yes, I know this is a long shot, but now it’s a bit, and I have to commit to it. Right now it’s win-win, either Ken agrees to be a guest (win!) or I can keep doing this bit (small win, but still a win!). Thanks for listening to Comedicine! Season 6 is coming soon and it’s fab! S6 - E8 - Liz Allen Buries the Lede

Episode in Comedicine
Liz Allen Buries the Lede    Our season 5 closer is a real treat! We have an incredible guest, Liz Allen, improv performer, director, coach, teacher and guru Liz Allen. Liz has performed and coached improv for 32 years! She works primarily out of iO in Chicago, (This is a big deal people!) but she has performed and coached improv all over the world, notably at the Edinburgh Fringe and, oh, by the way, she coached The Commune, the improv ensemble in Mike Birbiglia’s 2016 feature film Don’t Think Twice, NBD. (This actually blows Sarah’s mind as Mike Birbiglia is her fave comedian.) Recently, Liz has been delving into solo show writing and performance, she recently performed her first solo show, Tonight I Am My Mother, and is completing her next solo show, There Were Signs, about her years in Las Vegas with her husband and their offspring. This is how Sarah met Liz, on an online solo show class with The Barrow Group, which is one good thing we can say about the pandemic. Okay, she sounds amazing, but how does she end up as a guest on Comedicine? Well, before discovering improv, Liz was a mechanical engineer! What? She worked for fifteen years as a consulting engineer and pharmaceutical technical writer. One night, on a lark, she joined some friends seeing a show at The Second City in downtown Chicago…and Liz got bit by improv. Do engineering and improv mesh? You be the judge!    www.lizallenimprov.com  lizallenimprov@comcast.net  www.tonightiammymother.com    Thank you to our season 5 title sponsor, Scribenote!  Scribenote is an AI-powered veterinary scribe that saves you hours of record-keeping every day, boosts clinic efficiency, and helps you leave work on time.    Promo code: COMEDICINE15 for 15% off Scribenote for 1 year  Link: https://app.scribenote.com/auth/register?referralCode=Comedicine-Bonus (use this link to double the regular free trial usage!) S5 - E7 - Elaine Miller, Fanny and Me!

Episode in Comedicine
Elaine Miller, Fanny and Me!    In this episode of Comedicine, we get to talk to pelvic physiotherapist and comedian, Elaine Miller. Elaine Miller is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, specialising in women’s health.  She started doing stand-up comedy as a hobby, finding the lighter side of female urinary incontinence. In doing so, she found a way to reach and educate women about their fannies.  Elaine lives in Edinburgh, home of the biggest Arts festival in the world, so the obvious next step for her was to write and perform a solo show about pelvic floors at the Edinburgh Fringe. Gusset Grippers, won the Comedy Award at Fringe World, Australia in 2020.  Her second show, Viva Your Vulva, the Hole Story, was one of only two shows to be awarded five stars in 2023.  She collaborated with Monash University on a paper examining humour as a health promotion tool and her #DryByChristmas social media campaign reminding women to do their pelvic floor exercises was published by Rosie Haper from Bournemouth University. Elaine shares some incredible facts, like 50% of women don’t know the difference between the vulva and the vagina. FIFTY PERCENT PEOPLE! This is just not acceptable to Elaine. It is also not acceptable that it takes and average of 7 years for women to get medical help with incontinence. SEVEN YEARS!! The good news is that once you find a pelvic physio, most women get better! Through humour, Elaine is trying to change the world. One vagina at a time.      Clip – https://youtu.be/XODY8eqbG4I?feature=shared    More information on Elaine: https://www.csp.org.uk/frontline/article/3-minutes-elaine-miller    Scientific papers on humour:  https://www.monash.edu/news/articles/could-humour-be-the-key-to-a-healthier-society    https://staffprofiles.bournemouth.ac.uk/display/rharper1    @gussiegrips     SCRIBENOTE    Thank you to our season 5 title sponsor, Scribenote!  Scribenote is an AI-powered veterinary scribe that saves you hours of record-keeping every day, boosts clinic efficiency, and helps you leave work on time.    Promo code: COMEDICINE15 for 15% off Scribenote for 1 year  Link: https://app.scribenote.com/auth/register?referralCode=Comedicine-Bonus (use this linke to double the regular free trial usage!) Dr Janice Baker, Veteran, Veterinarian, Thespian  Dr Janice Lauren Baker has had an amazing career. She started out working with horses with a plan to become an equine veterinarian. She spent the bulk of her military career taking care of working dogs. S5 - E3 - Emily in Research - Emily Tang In this episode, we stretch the definition of health care a bit for our delightful guest, Emily Tang. Despite the pressure to become a doctor, Emily learned early on that she is not good with nightshifts or bodily fluids, especially blood, so doctor fell off the list of possible jobs. Emily is a full-time Master's student at the University of British Columbia. Her Master's research thesis is on social media and its influences on sexual health education for immigrant women. Emily and Sarah try to solve all of the problems caused by social media in this episode and we get so close! Emily discovered the UBC Comedy Club when she started her Master’s and now spends her spare time writing and performing stand-up comedy. She takes inspiration from her experiences as a first-generation Chinese immigrant, arriving in Canada at the age of 8. Emily has advocated for sexual health since high school, and she is also currently the Vice President of the graduate student society at UBC, advocating for government policies related to post-secondary education, sexualized violence, and well-being. Emily comes from a conservative Chinese cultural belief where sexual health is viewed as taboo, she wants to use stand-up comedy as another way to advocate for Asian women. I can’t wait to see what she does next!  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itsemilytang/  Thanks for listening to Comedicine! Send is a text to let us know what you think! S5 - E2 - Vet-fluencer Life with Dr Molly Says - Dr. Molly Brinkmann

Episode in Comedicine
Vet-fluencer Life with Dr Molly Says  In this episode, we get a chance to talk to Dr Molly Brinkmann, who is a veterinarian and content creator in the veterinary space. Molly loves people as much as she loves animals, which is not the norm for veterinary peeps. Like many of our guests, she is a polymath. She creates comedy videos for veterinarians and pet owners that educate (a bit) and entertain (a lot). She also is medical director of a small animal hospital in Franklin, Tennessee and she is the founder of The Companion Project, which brings veterinary services to people in need. She also runs a housing ministry and, did I mention she is a mom. How does she do all these things? No one knows! We get into important veterinary clinical topics like horses = cats and dogs = calves and we also share how Figs doesn’t want either of us to sell their fancy scrubs, which actually makes Sarah feel a lot better about herself. Molly is the ray of sunshine we all need right now. S5 - E1 - The Art of Veterinary Endoscopy meets the Science of Storytelling - Dr. Eugene & Ben Gorodetsky

Episode in Comedicine
The Art of Veterinary Endoscopy meets the Science of Storytelling  Dr. Eugene Gorodetsky is a veterinary mobile endoscopist in Vancouver. Originally from Donetsk, Ukraine (then USSR) he arrived in Canada in 1990 with a pregnant wife and a pregnant dog, both of whom promptly gave birth. Among the litter of spaniel puppies was Ben, who did not grow up to be a veterinarian or a dog, but followed his own path, studying the arts with a BFA from the U of Alberta and an MFA from Brooklyn College-CUNY. Ben is a performer, writer, producer, filmmaker and university lecturer. Ben is the director and host of Pinch Cabaret, an award-winning monthly variety show, and is the former Associate Artistic Director of Rapid Fire Theatre. Back to Eugene, he estimates he has removed approximately 14,000 individual foreign bodies from dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, lizards, turtles, horses, pigs, and one unfortunate lion. Eugene’s personal highlight reel of foreign bodies includes: a diamond ring, assorted brooches, a garden hose nozzle, door knobs, several rubber duckies, a string of intact Christmas tree light bulbs, seven feet of poop bags, Mr. PotatoHead’s tongue and not one, but TWO toupees! His endoscopy practice, BC Mobile Animal Endoscopy, enjoys a thriving social media following on Facebook. Back to Ben, who recognized that people want more of what Eugene is doing, his fans are hungry for more ‘strangely satisfying’ procedures. And so, “My Pet Ate WHAT??!!?” a reality show with Eugene and Ben, was born. You can check it out on CTV Wild starting January 2025 and later on Crave. Join us as we get to know Ben and Eugene! Episode in Comedicine
Season 4 Kenvitation Kenpilation     Another season of Comedicine has come to a close! I want to sincerely thank all of our wonderful guests from season 4. Season 5 is coming soon and it’s fab! S4 - E7 - Cracking Jokes and Cracking Backs - Michael Friedman

Episode in Comedicine
Cracking Jokes and Cracking Backs     On this episode, we talk to our first chiropractor! Dr Michael Friedman joins us from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, which is also where Sarah lives now so we are neighbours! Cool. Michael tells us about the pros and cons of practicing as a chiropractor and his stand up comedy, which has been something that he always wanted to do. He finally took the plunge in 2013 and he hasn’t looked back. Micheal is a regular around the Ottawa comedy scene and he has also travelled around Canada with his comedy. We get into the very controversial topic of dishwasher loading and Sarah flexes her nerd muscles hard and out-nerds Michael with her utensile loading system! Michael also tells us about a patient who did not think a chiropractor should be a stand up comedian because it is not professional and this led Sarah to think that this woman might be dead inside. You be the judge, on this episode of Comedicine!    Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/dr.michael71/?hl=en  Thanks for listening to Comedicine! Send is a text to let us know what you think!
