CV Central - 4/10/2020 - 'Divided We Stand: The Fault Lines of Covid Dysfunction in America'

CV Central celebrates our fiftieth episode as the longest running pandemic podcast by looking at how the struggle to find winners financially and ideologically is making the American response incoherent which portends a hard future on every front, including health and economics.  As the WSJ shifts to see immune suppression as playing a major role, we see the Fed tell us unemployment will rise further still as the economy shrinks.  A delayed and reactive Federal response emphasizing top-down control is trying to save the old system as even as we see 17 million Americans unemployed, a third unable to pay rent, and people without help stuck in a labyrinthine system of bureaucracy.  Without PPE or support to be delivered, California's Governor talks about their own nation-state acting differently as autonomy grows, and in a totally different but equally independent manner, we see Idahoans wanting to protect their privacy and liberty as a diverging response.  Will we accept tracking?  What does the new world look like with a second and other waves threatened?  We see alienation, division, and scarcity as the food chain is covered, and we seek to prepare for a future whose only certainty is how different it will surely become. CV Central - 4/9/2020 - 'How Brazil is like America and troubled nations around the world.'

Episode 49 looks at how countries around the world are handling the coronavirus outbreak.  We look at Korea reporting about this question of reactivation and what it means to start things off.  From there, we look at how badly Ecuador has been pounded and all the ways in which Brazil, a country not dissimilar to the United States in many aspects, is struggling and sits just before a major outbreak.  India is trying to prevent a disaster, as we share a story of a gathering in Pakistan 100,000 strong that may infect much of the Muslim Third World.  Indonesia is under pressure and Algeria is struggling to remain stable.  Turkey has jumped into the front rank of nations and Russia is arresting people for dog walking.  Sweden let the disease flow more freely, and now has taken the lead in death toll in Scandinavia, paralleling how the UK has become struck.  Lastly, we include a leaked speech from a PLA speaker in China that suggests a very scary future if the Covid they fear is revealed as our reality.  In sum, we learn the worldwide consequences are far beyond stopping from the health, economic, and geopolitical levels as the coronavirus moves forward. CV Central - 4/8/2020 - 'Hypoxia, Antibodies, Reactivation, Ivermectin, and Mask Distribution'

In our 48th episode, we explore challenging evidence suggesting that antibody protection is brief and scant, that the red blood cells are another target, and a provocative fear that asymptomatic carriers may experience reactivation through means not understood within a month of a first infection.  After looking at the troubles in the Bronx, and an elevated death toll from the UK from home deaths, we consider why ivermectin might be helping as another antimalarial.  We add evidence the hypoxia leading to deaths is because Covid interferes with both the iron and scaffolding of red blood cells, and learn that carriers with slight infection were without antibodies in under a month in a substantial number of cases.  This changes many assumptions in the modeling, suggesting reinfection could occur rapidly, but also with increasing severity as recurrent asymptomatic carriers could hit each other with increased density of viral load in infected areas with already present Covid to guide potential immune suppression.  These problems might be why we see UK papers now questioning if this came from a lab as China hoards masks at the same time people get sick in Toronto from bad ones they shipped out.  Feds are taking from states and hospitals without explanation in the US.  In the good news department, Vitamin C helps a lot even for those in the hospital, and North Dakota gives us an example of how science can permit different publicly useful and acceptable responses as we move forward. CV Central - 4/7/2020 - 'The bad news in plain sight, divorcing finance from the economy, and China.'

Episode 47 offers a counterpoint to the optimism which is infecting the West and leading to dangerously premature conclusions.  New reporting from Spain suggests a death told double or triple what was officially recorded from Covid, more people in Korea are testing as reinfected, and we look at the suggestion hypoxia, a lack of oxygen, might be part of the problem resulting from the virus potentially interacting with hemoglobin, or red blood cells.  As promised, economics are considered as detail after detail shows how we're seeing the decoupling of finance from the real world of goods and services as we show food lines lengthen, grocery workers die, warehouses hampered, and worries grow.  Gold rising as stocks do the same hint at the fundamental disconnect.  We close with another glance into China where they are trying to internationalize internet kill switches as they claim zero infections in their military and charge Italy to get back the masks a more generous people once donated to the CCP.  From health to economics to geopolitics, the evidence makes clear this is only the beginning of what Covid hath wrought upon us. CV Central - 4/6/2020 - 'The limits of social distancing and the known unknowns.'

For Episode 46, we reset and take a look at the current situation.  Good news about flattening curves in Spain, Italy, and elsewhere conceals that we are at the beginning of a long story.  We look at the modeling from US and the many missteps along the way as we ask if we're really turning the corner, using the South as having many examples of how the modeling that presumes distancing does not reflect the on the ground reality.  Then, we ask about the adaptability of the coronavirus, noting how it jumps species, closing with stories about mutations and recombination in this class allowing for greater transmissibility. CV Central - 4/3/2020 - 'China and the United States - A Complicated Situation'

Episode 45 delves deeply into China, their response, and the evolving competition with the United States.  We start by looking at Latin America coming into crisis, promising a rising death toll and infection in countries from Mexico to Chile, peeking at Ecuador here.  We see nearly 7 million Americans now out of work as backdrop.  From there, we see the CIA reporting now that the CCP fudged the numbers.  China is friendly to some with new propaganda outlets and offers of masks to Italy and the UK, but won't even allow Taiwan to get near the WHO as they buzz them with war planes.  We look at the doctrine, how China continues to spend to gain influence, what 5G allows for standards and surveillance and ask as America gets sicker and withdraws, including with two aircraft carriers, what will China do?  Whether by chance or choice, the opportunities for the dragon seem to be rising in this year of the rat. CV Central - 4/2/2020 - 'Who else dies, cats as spreaders, and ventilator support issues'

Here in Episode 44, we look more deeply into the two to three times normal death rate of people who are passing beyond annual averages in Lombardy of whom only a third are being attributed to Covid.  A new study suggests ferrets and cats may carry the coronavirus, including the possibility cats exhale the virus.  Even with more ventilators coming online, shortages in doctors, drugs, and oxygen represent new problems, as nurses are more actively protesting being asked to work absent PPE.  Canada says to expect this until July, at best, as the Netherlands starts studying when herd immunity may come.  Food banks are seeing 40x their usage in Orange County, CA and we have only seen one in a thousand, if that, exposed as the crisis deepens. CV Central - 4/1/2020 - 'Neurological invasion, silencing of physicians, and an attitudinal shift'

Episode 43 starts with a troubling case of a woman from Detroit who suffered acute hemorrhagic necrotizing encephalopathy - or a bleeding brain - apparently related to Covid and the cytokine storm problem.  We look at a study from Los Angeles that showed only 5% of the suspected influenza patients had Covid, meaning both coronavirus spread is in the community there but also still likely has many more people to reach foreshadowing a longer interval.  That's bad news for doctors being silenced and fired for talking about a lack of PPE leading to situations like Boston and Spain where mass staff infection is becoming common.  In NY, the situation is seeing mass graves being predug by prisoners.  All this is happening as we see people under extreme psychological and economic stress and with a leadership vacuum in taking the fight to the virus promising instability and wilder days ahead. CV Central - 3/31/2020 - 'Spread Through Conversation, Growing Unrest, Under Reporting Fatalities'

We seek the ultimate questions in Episode 42 as some of your inquiries are answered with the latest research.  We look at how not just cases, but deaths are likely being under reported especially as places with taxed medical systems make the decision to exclude high risk low survivability patients, substantiated by proving fatality numbers versus annual averages and Covid official casualty counts that are substantially beneath this discrepancy.  We learn that infants seem not to carry the coronavirus, although most had antibodies.  Japanese researchers show how microparticles could spread Covid in many more places with video that will astound.  In light of this, we see Austria's decision to mandate masks outside as sensible, as those places without protection get ill more quickly.  On the economic front, we see strikes and worker unrest building at Amazon, Whole Foods, in meatpacking and agriculture.  Tenants are planning not to pay, and Sicilians working under the table are now stealing their groceries.  Tensions build as the government response helps some but not all, and with restrictions likely until June as promoted in Virginia, the future will be a challenge.  Lastly, Brazil prepares as they see the virus is mutating there and a long fight is ahead. CV Central - 3/30/2020 - 'Immune Overreaction, Months not Weeks, and Detroit'

We begin our eighth week of coronavirus coverage with Episode 41 as we look to answer questions.  Exploring the confused immune response and cytokine storm effects may explain why certain people get more ill including critically so, offering new avenues for medical intervention.  We discuss the high mortality rate and the problems of ventilators.  Countries around the globe push back the timeframe as we see an unusually high unattributed number of dead people emerge from Wuhan questioning those numbers one urn at a time.  Italy sees the curve flatten but the pressure continue as some looting happens in Sicily.  New York has food banks under pressure as new hospitals arise.  But what is happening in NYC is spreading throughout America as we look at both small towns and a Midwestern city in Detroit to show just how fast Covid takes root once in a given area. CV Central - 3/27/2020 - 'What Covid means for the human economy, key fault lines revealed'

The fortieth episode looks at the second part of the health equation which is to delve into why the economic problem is so bad.  After a quick review of drug shortages, an exploration of a different pathway by which the coronavirus is harming people, and a glance into Russia getting sick and Italy having dead whose numbers are rising sharply in one town without an attributed reason, we look at the pending policy bill.  A pork-laden monstrosity that is conceived reactively as just another response in an unending line of new debts, it fails to solve the basic question of how to keep people whole and stop people from moving for a time sufficient to stamp out Covid.  The rush to satisfy debt versus public health means a bill not so concerned with ventilators, PPE, and medical support as it is inadequate loans, heavy bureaucracies, and promising a bigger problem later for many people.  We see 3.3 million Americans unemployed this week as the first harbinger of many more to come.  Inability to pay rent, then to pay mortgages, and then to pay lenders comes forward as small businesses shutter.  How does agriculture hold up especially with a severely at risk population for both spread and contamination in close quarters outside legal status still out there?  Absent these answers, we see truckers avoiding NYC, people in northern Michigan telling city folks to stay home, and Texas now quarantining people coming from hot spots being quarantined or heavily fined and incarcerated.  All this in a battle between finance, debt, and control, with economy, assets, and scarcity on the other side as people make rational health decisions toward safety, something our government seems to struggle on all sides to understand. CV Central - 3/26/2020 - 'NYC in Grave Detail, Ethics of Death Panels, Tipping Point'

Episode 39 is the first part of an exploration about the dangers America faces and what we realistically should respect from this virus.  After a quick update in which it appears reinfection is less likely as good news but mutation more aggressive as bad news, we go into the action in New York's hospitals where life and death scenes are playing out right now as supply is being overwhelmed.  The stark relief comes into focus with two pieces by the New England Journal of Medicine that consider rationing of care, and ventilator protocols as what some will call triage and others will brand death panels because of our inaction.  We see morgue capacity now in question, officers calling off sick, and doctor breaking down as garbage bags are being used to supplement PPE.  This crisis may go on for many months, be a season event, and we look starkly at the potential of event that without much better action that seems improbable from not just policy makers, but our businesses and our people, where Americans are chancing a death toll into the millions by summer's end.  Tomorrow's second part will go into the equally troubling economic and survival implications of a society entering plague with disparity, distrust, and despair. CV Central - 3/25/2020 - 'The False Calm, Key Vulnerabilities, and How the Banks are Gaming Us'

Episode 38 goes for a wider and deeper cut into the virus.  We check in with New York where the hospital system is now under deep stress, in the quickly expanding Atlanta cluster, see LA cutting off power to those businesses who stay open, and we look into how China lost many cell phone users as another hint something worse happened.  People flee from the cities to the country to cold receptions as countries begin shutting down trade and exports for their own domestic need.  The military has begun ramping up support operations with hospitals and doctors incoming.  Amidst all this, we look at DC disconnected with a so-called coronavirus support plan that basically promises 4% to the American people, 29% to corporate interests, and 67% to the banks who are being permitted to make unlimited loans with free money while we are told to work in these dangerous conditions.  This widening gap between finance and economy, between currency and value, is at the heart of what might cause a situation worse than 1929 and as we see spot gold rise while gold contracts plummet, we look critically at what people say they are doing versus what they are actually doing as too many shift the emphasis from the virus and health to their own cynical ends. CV Central - 3/24/2020 - 'America Sold Out, Risk Factor Considered, and Europe Grappling'

Episode 37 begins with a scathing critique of how America's determination to put finance, not economics, ahead of science and health is going to lead to this country experiencing the worst of all worlds with the utterly inadequate response by both the Executive and Legislative branches where it is increasingly clear everything but Covid is their priority.  We present a compelling case from Johns Hopkins as to why the science is bad and use an article about the peril to commercial mortgages with echoes of 2008 to hint at what is really going on in America.  In science updates, we have news about the increased risk about diabetics and hypertension, more details about how aggressively the coronavirus obliterates the nervous system, and information surface contamination may be longer in certain environments.  A tour through Europe and Australia shows how countries are being rewarded for more effective and immediate responses, as we see Italy trying to flatten the curve as Spain suffers from wider dispersal, the French deal with people ignoring social distancing measures, and the Germans testing early, often, and getting prepared.  The UK now has moved into lockdown, hoping to blunt the problem, and Australia is on the same page as the explosion has now hit down under. CV Central - 3/23/2020 - 'NYC Exploding, On Site Reports, Debt Bubble, and Contingencies'

Episode 36 starts a new week with more stories about the terrible symptoms of this disease as well as a report all may not be well in Wuhan.  Italy can't even count their dead and now Covid-19 is everywhere in Canada.  New York features as the center of this outbreak with 5% of global current cases and we see the struggle to keep going as one surgeon at NY Presbyterian Hospital reports that can't meet the coming demand.  Medical imports are lagging, chloroquine is running out, and the search for PPE is becoming critical as the CDC is telling nurses to wear bandanas if all else fails.  We look into the quarantine letters about essential businesses and see that as an effort to keep people out, but at what expense to the virus fighting effort as many people in Seattle choose to ignore stay at home orders.  As DC fights over a pork laden bill, we look at the debt balloon, the question of inflation, and listen to the Fed warn nearly 1/3 of people may lose their job and half our GDP may also be lost.  We look at three ways to deal with that:  Resetting the debt, sending in the military, or trying to limp through, admitting there is no perfect solution to a pandemic running roughshod. CV Central - 3/20/2020 - 'A Drug for Severe Cases, Privacy Issues, and States on the Move'

Some positive news starts Episode 35 as we report on a new blood test for Covid antibodies which might open up the opportunity for rapidly expanded onsite testing.  We also found a study from China which reports that Tocilizumab is a drug which helped patients in severe distress recover lymphocytes and improve blood oxygen saturation, a chance to reduce the ventilator shortage.  The government is working with social media to gain information even as suppression efforts continue, including more analysis of the leaked US Health and Human Services report where they anticipate supply shortages for the next 18 months or longer.  The Trump Administration appears to be contemplated a ban on domestic air travel, shutting down the stock market, and asking people to stay in place.  However, the existing bill before Congress slowly working forward is not adequate to meet the needs of many people to accomplish such a quarantine meaning absent much improved medical intervention, the spread will likely hasten.  Reports from California, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania all show the acceleration of the coronavirus and slowing of the economy.  While government thinks small, people come up big as 3D printers help keep people safe and alive in both New York and Italy, showing the value of open source community based action. CV Central - 3/19/2020 - '18 Months, Captive Populations, and Mass Unrest'

For Episode 34, we start with a reminder that younger people can and do get sick, die, and use valuable resources when they don't separate themselves from the Covid-19 outbreak.  London is moving toward lockdown as the United States sees a report leak that claims they see the crisis as being 18 months or longer, perhaps informed by the Imperial College study and the time to vaccine with multiple waves.  Amazon now has a warehouse worker sick and a personal anecdote about food scarcity serve as warning for potential shortages ahead.  We look first at nursing homes where people are getting sick from hospital visits or other sources, but also at prisons and the complex situation there.  To prevent virus spread, nonviolent offenders are being released before riots happen, but will they have access to resources, cause disruptions, and how will law enforcement react and will it continue showing up?  Big questions and few answers, but situations we need to watch.  JP Morgan sees our economy shrinking by 14% next quarter already, and oil is tumbling further - what will last and how you can prepare are what we look at in this challenging episode. CV Central - 3/18/2020 - 'Youth at Risk, Who Pays for What, and the US South'

For our thirty-third episode, we start by noting that Facebook is now blocking legitimate stories which they attribute to a "bug" as the WHO and partners invest more energy into controlling information than fighting the outbreak.  We share a new study that suggests children can still be at risk, though thankfully less than adults, as we also report from the Dutch that many young seemingly healthy people are in severe distress from Covid.  The hope is people will change their behaviors as New York is perched on the verge of a major shutdown that we see happening now in Switzerland.  We look at the problems of renters, unemployed, and those needing resources as a bipartisan consensus forms around debt suspension or forgiveness and the direct payment of income to all adult Americans to get through this crisis so people won't have to go out.  As that lurches forward, we see Texas getting prepared with better decisions about public events, but shortfalls in supply.  Louisiana is also coming under the gun post Mardi Gras, and while Florida has begun shutting down some bars and restaurants, partially, the Sunshine State continues to lag.  Lastly, a new drug for fighting flu in Japan is having some positive impacts so we talk about favipiravir (Avigan) as another tool in the arsenal. CV Central - 3/17/2020 - 'France, San Francisco, Amazon, T-Cells, and Chokepoints'

A deeper look into how these lockdowns will function and what purpose they serve is the focus of Episode 32.  After more harrowing evidence from Italy, we look deeply into why you don't want to treat Covid with ibuprofen for the early fever and a dive into the T-cells suggests that afflicted immune response is at the heart of case severity.  Revised modeling in the UK is leading to a shift from mitigation to containment, as reflect in France's mandatory shutdown.  We see the same in the US starting as San Francisco is the first area to begin lockdowns will likely only accelerate even as we must wonder will they prove enough given the many exemptions required to keep basic services functioning.  We address the strange irony that the food production, distribution, and delivery system will require people who are most at risk for the least compensation to contemplate serious risk to help others who are not exposed, and look at how Amazon will deal with this and the many tensions that create a massive vulnerability.  Lastly, we peek at the first efforts toward the first vaccine candidate - a goal far off in this distance but toward which progress is being attempted. Episode 31 sees a new week beginning with the world shutting down to fight coronavirus by stopping the spread by any means possible.  Austria, France, and Spain join Italy in lockdown as Europe's outbreak accelerates wildly.  We cycle the Anglosphere to see New Zealand closing down fast, Australia treading water, the United States stumbling, and the UK preparing for the worst.  Ohio offers an example of aggressive proactive action for social distancing as other states and cities begin independently doing the same.  New numbers suggest a higher case fatality rate, in both the best case scenario, and the unfortunately more realistic situation we are moving toward which will sorely test each country's medical system but for a fortunate few.
