Nick Vujic and Khari Douglas, in this installment of the First Four format, take a look at the first four episodes of both the original and rebooted Powerpuff Girls series. We find that the new show doesn't live up to the old one, with a lot of the inventive humor through narration, dialogue, and visuals replaced by modern cultural signifiers and painfully unfunny asides. Nick thinks the new punk theme is pretty tight though, and he won't let anyone tell him otherwise.

The idea is, we watch the first four episodes, and decide from there whether we will continue to watch and if we would recommend it to others. Discussion points in this episode include our astonishment that the show bought music rights, the sometimes painful use of exposition in the show, and how unfortunately bland Gamora is. Finally, we speculate a bit on Thanos' upcoming role in the MCU.

In the first part of our Marvel madness coverage, Nick and Khari talk Marvel's latest release, Captain America: Civil War. We debate whether Civil War is an Avengers movie, discuss how the movie subverts the "greater evil" trope, praise the movie's approach with Spiderman, and argue over whether the airport scene feels like it 'fits' in the movie. Nick also has some problems with Scarlet Witch's accent, and goes on a tear about chicken paprikash.

Nick Vujic and Khari Douglas fire up the RNG to pick an episode each from Shinichiro Watnabe's catalog. For Cowboy Bebop, we got Asteroid Blues, for Samurai Champloo, we got War of the Words, and for Space Dandy, we got Even Vacuum Cleaners Fall in Love, Baby. Discussion points include Watanabe's mishmash style in music and setting, why Cowboy Bebop is a masterclass in expositionless world building, Champloo's weird anachronistic flourishes, and Dandy's unexpected heart. Nick gushes on and on about Bebop, while Khari is less enthused. And as always, we throw a few tangents your way for good measure.

Discussion points include Lord and Miller's ability to use established properties and historical figures for comedy, how both works consider the act of fitting in/out, and whether the Lego Movie is really just The Matrix with Legos. After a brief "What have you been watching?" segment where I fit in some animation talk, we get into the nitty gritties about the wildly popular show and novels. Nick has watched the show, Khari has read the books, and Matt has seen and read both. Matt walks us through some of the major differences between the formats, and then we discuss the highlights and mock the lowlights in characters and plotlines. We ask ourselves whether Thrones' peak in the zeitgeist has passed, make a few predictions, and finally decide once and for all which is better: book or show (It's inconclusive).

Nick Vujic and Khari Douglas return to Adventure Time and Steven Universe to talk about what's been going down in their most recent seasons up to now. That's season 7 of Adventure Time up until "Don't Look" and the entirity of the newly reclassified season 2 of Steven Universe. We talk a little bit about the weird renewal/nonrenewal of Steven Universe, and follow up with AT discussion about the aftermath of the Comet, the nearing culmination of Finn's character arc, how complicated the plot of the show has become, as well as the Ice King's arc. With regards to SU, we discuss Peridot's character turn, the insights we've gotten into Pearl's backstory, and do some rumormongering about Pink Diamond. All this, along with the highlights and lowlights of each season, and as always some dumb tangential references.

In this episode, Nick Vujic and Khari Douglas discuss the recently released Batman v Superman, and then from that context take a look at the Bruceverse of DC animated TV. In the first segment we take a harsh look at the missteps (and the few bright spots) of Zack Snyder's new film. After that, we reflect on the old Batman, Superman, and Justice League cartoons from the 90's with an aim of comparing their approach to Zack Snyder's. The episodes discussed in this segment of 3RNG are "What is Reality?" for B:TAS, "Brave New Metropolis" for S:TAS, and "A Knight of Shadows" for JL. We find something to like about these cartoons despite their hokey flaws, which is far more than we can say about Batman V Superman.

In the second installment of the 3RNG series, Nick and Khari take a look at Jon H. Benjamin's animated resume. We're talking McGuirk, Archer, and Bob here. The three episodes the RNG spit out were Viscous Coupling for Archer, Mortgages and Marbles for Home Movies, and The Equestranauts for Bob's Burgers. We discuss how these three shows mine their comedy from very differenet sources, the subtle differences between Jon Benjamin's voice acting roles, and we talk about whether marbles can actually fit inside adult human noses.

Nick Vujic and Khari Douglas discuss the massively popular anime of the past year, One Punch Man. In the podcast we talk about One Punch Man as a parody of action anime such as Dragonball Z, as well as Western superhero stories. We talk about how the show derives its humor by undercutting the self seriousness of its characters and their ludicrous backstories, how the Hero Association plotline frames the series, and Saitama's flirtation with insecurity and existentialism. We also quote some of the funny bits. It's hysterical, did we mention that?
