Tenacity, Support, and Victories

Show Notes: https://goo.gl/E3Q1S8 Facebook: https://goo.gl/eWhvZp Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- Contact us to be a guest or a guest host. We deal with failures and successes in life. Through those endeavors how often do we walk away or lose sight? Moreover, do we have anyone to support us and do we support those around us? I recently saw a video going viral showing a child doing a box jump with the support of her coach/parent. The intensity and tenacity of the kid, the support they received, and the elated celebration of achievement really hit home. I wanted to address the inspiration and life lessons and small child can teach us for our everyday lives. We Should Stop Saying These

Show Notes: https://goo.gl/w8ti12 Facebook: https://goo.gl/eWhvZp Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- Contact us to be a guest or a guest host. We discuss a lot of things on the show and out in the world in regards to health, diet and fitness. The vast majority of the advise and motivation we provide is helpful. Sometimes, however, we may be doing more harm than good and spreading poor information or representing good information in a poor way. Some topics we should stop saying or change our message on are: - Detoxing - No pain, no gain - Everything in moderation - Spot training for weight loss - Organic food has more nutrients On this episode I discuss each of these and how we can better address their underlying subjects. ----- Check out the store: https://goo.gl/Ytti1Y Support the show: https://goo.gl/O5w2R0 Grab a book with Audible: https://goo.gl/SzEZJO Start shopping at Thrive Market: https://goo.gl/D1YEyH

5 Vegan Myths

If you've been vegan or sometime you know this all too well, and if you're new to lifestyle, get ready. We've mentioned a few myths before but I wanted to focus on a few that we don't always talk about (that means we're skipping the protein one). I'd love to hear your feedback! Your Stress is Their Stress

Show Notes: https://goo.gl/nNvLky Facebook: https://goo.gl/eWhvZp Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- Contact us to be a guest or a guest host. Stress can do a surprising amount of damage to you physical and mental health. We tend to forget the amount of damage it can do to our friends and family. It's not possible to avoid stress completely but being able to recognize the signs and deal with stressors correctly can be a massive benefit to ourselves and those around us   Symptoms headaches insomnia anxiety over eating / not eating social withdrawal chest pain fatigue feeling like you’re losing control How Stress Effects Us Physical increased risk of heart attack / high blood pressure Stress increases blood flow to muscles, constricts blood vessels, and increases heart rate. Constant stress to the heart in this manner can lead to heart attacks and stroke. Even in relatively healthy people. weakened immune system Stress hormones jump starts the immune system, good if you’re hurt but constant stimulation weakens your system leaving you open to illness missed periods / heavy or irregular cycle Can also magnify symptoms of menopause drug / alcohol abuse obesity mental increased chances of depression anger / irritation How Our Stress Affects Others Someone once told me, we take things out on those we love because we trust them. Unfortunately, that places your chronic stress on them putting them into the same cycle you’ve found yourself. It’s important to be self aware and listen to those around you. If they lash out back at you, it’s likely they are feeding off your stress. They may also ask why you’re acting or talking a certain way, this is a great trigger that you may need to dial it back and evaluate. There’s nothing wrong with saying you need a moment to think or calm down. We all have a mechanism in our brains that copycats those in our social circles. These are called “mirror neurons” and are used to help social circles empathize, bond, and learn. We see these in action when we yawn after another person or we mirror our work collages posture. This also goes for emotions. Steps to reduce Stress Start writing in a journal A journal can help you recognize stressors as well as help you naturally work out solutions Try to locate your triggers If you can, figure out what your common stressors are that you can control. If it’s you commute, maybe discuss flex time with your boss to avoid traffic or maybe telecommute a once or twice a week. If it your kids when you get home, work with a family member or spouse to watch your kids for a moment to decompress. You may not be able to address every stressor but you’ll be surprised what targeting only a few can do for your physical and mental health. The 4 A’s Avoid stress if you can by saying “no”, keep away from those who stress you out that you don’t have to interact with, take control over your environment such as the the TV or shopping in a less crowded store, reduce your todo list to the necessities. Alter your situation Express yourself to those that add to your stress by limiting conversation or letting them know they are adding to your stress. Most people will sympathize and be willing to help, compromise where possible, be mindful of your workload. Adapt Try to put a silver lining on problems such as bad traffic is a chance to listen to a new audiobook or podcast, look at the big picture / the long term odds are the problem won’t have as long of an effect as you think Accept things you can’t change Don’t try to control the uncontrollable sometimes it’s easier to prepare than fight the inevitable, learn to forgive those that caused stress or make mistakes holding on to something that’s causing stress to you but no the other person is just poisoning yourself. Talk to loved ones, vent. Find a person at work, at home, friend, or family that’s happy to just listen to you talk. They may be able to help with solutions. If you just want to vent without getting feedback, let them know. MOVE THAT BODY hit a heavy bag / excersize dance like an idiot go for a walk hike Do something out of the ordinary take a painting class lay in the grass and find pictures in clouds read drink some coffee or tea and do nothing Manage your time better by not over committing to things, making a list of priorities, white board your items at work or display them so other know you have a lot going on, break things into steps Meditation Take a break / breather ----- Check out the store: https://goo.gl/Ytti1Y Support the show: https://goo.gl/O5w2R0 Grab a book with Audible: https://goo.gl/SzEZJO Start shopping at Thrive Market: https://goo.gl/D1YEyH

Lindsay Wolf: Investigating Slaughterhouses

Show Notes: https://goo.gl/kSp0xc Facebook: https://goo.gl/uoQRtL Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- Contact us to be a guest or a guest host. When it comes to animal rights organizations, helping others take notice, and making real change in farmed animal welfare the most vital piece are the investigators. The men and women who take on this job are rarely seen or known by the public but they make some of the greatest impact. Any undercover video you've seen was the act of someone putting a lot on the line to expose animal cruelty as it really happens. INVESTIGATING SLAUGHTERHOUSES While in L.A., Lindsay Wolf, Vice President of Investigations for MFA, sat down with me to talk about her path as an investigator. Further into the show we discuss how she hires / trains new investigators and what life is like taking up a camera and exposing the harsh realities of slaughterhouses. It's rare to get a peek behind the curtain. I know this will be as eye opening for you as it was for me. Everyone Can Be an Activist

Show Notes: https://goo.gl/kSp0xc Facebook: https://goo.gl/uoQRtL Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh -----   After a long week in Los Angeles ten a week to recover and regroup we're back in action! I drug the recording gear with me all the way across the country (by plan, don't be crazy) and managed to get Liz back on the mic with me in person to discuss what activism is and how we can do it. BEING AN ACTIVIST Anything you do to promote the movement to being plant based for the planet, your health, or the animals is an act of activism. For some it's sharing recipes and for others it's leafleting a college campus or being an investigator for an animal rights organization. The important that is to find what's fits you, your temperament, and makes the impact on others you want to me. Liz and I dig into how each of us (and you) do a lot by doing a little. We also expand on how you can do more if you feel what you've done so far isn't quite enough. Handling Unexpected Moments

Show Notes: https://goo.gl/kSp0xc Facebook: https://goo.gl/uoQRtL Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- I spent the new year's at my parents house this year. As I grazed on some buffalo cauliflower, red pepper hummus, and the guacamole I brought I glanced that the television from time to time. My parents always have the "rockin' new year's eve" on so the night was full mostly of pop singers. Near midnight I caught a glimpse of Mariah Carey performing. I noticed she was lip syncing but that's not what caught me off guard. It was obvious she was having technical issue. Even more obvious, she wasn't taking the malfunctions very well. She was visually shaken, frustrated, and action out toward the staff. The next day the internet was abuzz about this performance I saw another video, this one of Adele. In this video, all the audio caught out on her mid song. For a split second she was taken off guard, as we all would be, but she quickly snapped back into her song (with some audience participation) and let the professionals running the show do their jobs. The sound quickly came back before the song was complete. Aside from the lack of audio, you would never know things were awry.  I found it interesting how to professionals in their field not only reacting to an unexpected moment but how the openly treated the staff there to assist with problem and ensure a smooth performance. This lead me to ask how I handle these moments. UNEXPECTED MOMENTS Liz Quick my friend and coworker at Mercy For Animals joined me as a guest host. We have very different jobs and responsibilities but both are ripe with unexpected moments. She was gracious enough to sit with me and chat about how she handles life distractions and what we can learn from Mariah's and Adele's attitudes. Remember guys: Feelings are just temporary visitors. Show Notes: https://goo.gl/duKbT4 Facebook: https://goo.gl/uoQRtL Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- The holidays are upon us which means cooking, eating more then we should, and spending time around family. Some of you may be cooking for the first time and many of us are spending time with family that may not be dedicated to a plant based lifestyle. Both of these factors can be stressful but you're not alone, we've all been there. Veganism isn't About Perfection

How many times have you been called out by the "vegan police" for something outside of your control, rather it be unknowingly eating something with dairy or taking a medication after surgery? A recent post on Facebook stirred up some conversation about a young lady who needed dental work. She was avoiding necessary health care out of the fear of having animal products injected into her body. Though I can understand her concerns it's important to be sure you put the oxygen mask on yourself first. It's hard to be a voice for the voiceless when a tooth infection kills you. ----- No one has Perfection We all contribute in some way such as a bug hitting our windshield, unknowingly stepping on an ant, or a field mouse that dies while a farm harvests carrots. None of us are immune to some level of harm. However, making the decisions we can that align with the ethics of a plant based life style is all we can really ask for and expect. It's important to be kind to yourself and others when transitioning and making through choices such as getting health care. ----- Check out the store: https://goo.gl/Ytti1Y Support the show: https://goo.gl/O5w2R0  Grab a book with Audible: https://goo.gl/SzEZJO Start shopping at Thrive Market: https://goo.gl/D1YEyH

Howard Jacobson and Josh LaJaunie: Obesity Autopsy

While you're at it, support the show, grab a book with Audible, or start shopping at Thrive Market.   Recently the BBC televised the autopsy of an obese woman called Obesity - The Post Mortem. Hope became aware of the obesity autopsy after reading an article claiming it to be fat shaming. Of course we had to take an opportunity to locate and view the autopsy to see how the show presented the data and how the issue of obesity was addressed. We were pleased to see that rather than shaming the person they provided evidence regarding excessive weight gain and internal organs. It was appalling to see how her weight affected nearly all of her organs including her liver and lungs. Dr. Howard Jacobson, who we've had on the show before, and Josh LaJaunie, formerly obese man turned ultra marathon runner, were gracious enough to chat with us about the obesity autopsy. They also discussed taking the steps and overcoming obstacles to get over our own physical hold ups and start hitting the pavement again. It's inspired Hope and I both to jump back on the wagon and we know it will push you to review your physical state and make a change today. Jen Peer Rich: Relying on Your Inner Genius

While you're at it, support the show, grab a book with Audible, or start shopping at Thrive Market. We hope you've set some time aside for an unexpected therapy session as that's what this episode turned into. Jen Peer-Rich is a unique spirit that, in our opinion, could fill countless episodes. We certainly could learn something new from her and about ourselves with each show. It's safe to say this episode will give you the ability (and permission) to have some inner reflection. After this episode you'll have the tools to be comfortable in who you are and begin to rebuild. Through all of our laughs, and nearly blowing out Matt's ears, Jen made amazing points. She really forced us to think about how we view ourselves, how those views are part of who we are, and how our thoughts are not really us. We covered quite a bit on the show, to say the least. So much that you'll need to listen more than once to really take each part to heart. Personally, I recommend finding a comfortable couch, laying down and using her words as a guide for inner reflection and finding your strength. ABOUT JEN PEER-RICH Jen Peer-Rich is the founder of Friends in Presence. She is an alchemist, artist, speaker, and author, focusing on themes of conscious living, ecological sanity, and cultural evolution. Her message attracts brave humans, who dare to investigate themselves in an honest psychological inquiry that challenges the lie of separation from nature. Jen established Friends in Presence as a celebration of individual and collective healing. ABOUT FRIENDS IN PRESENCE Friends in Presence is a movement upholding the inherent sanity of psyche and spirit as vital expressions of nature. This 501c(3) nonprofit organization operates under the umbrella of the Alliance of Divine Love, an international interfaith ministry. Friends in Presence is a resource to connect, inform, investigate and integrate conscious living through autognosis and direct experience. It is based on the idea that restoration of natural intelligence is not only possible, it is our human birthright. We don't have to be caged by confusion. We do have to be brave- we must go deeper and begin an inner investigation.
