It’s voting season. With many American voters either standing in long lines to vote in person or properly filling out mail-in ballots, the election this year marks voting “firsts” for many. Since the voting days back when America was a new nation, there have been several attempts to use technology to make the voting process more secure, accurate, safe, and accessible. With the national dialogue focused on systemic and racial inequality in law enforcement and criminal justice settings, it is easy to underlook some of the covert discrimination happening on the technical front. From facial recognition and credit reporting, to recruitment and predictive policing software, algorithmic bias hurts consumers and end users by emphasizing racial or gender features.
