Tired of Failed Resolutions?

Humans like rituals, which is why New Year’s resolutions are so popular. The clean slate of a calendar flip helps people reflect on changes they’d like to make in their lives. Weight loss is a very popular resolution. Failure stems from drastic changes and fad diets. Making small changes and having realistic goals supports success. Having the sensory components of textures and flavors you enjoy make it easier to stick to changes. Getting fit is another common resolution. Many people hit the gym too hard and heavy at the top of the new year, being too sore and rundown to return. Numbers on the scale won’t change unless you also make dietary shifts. Activity outside of the gym can still produce health results. People also want to get organized to reduce stress. Implement a strategy to help you manage daily tasks through a to-do list or app. Listen as Dr. Crystal Gossard joins Dr. Mike Smith to share how to find success with your resolutions.

Machine Learning & Psychiatry

Machine learning and artificial intelligence may be the future of medicine. Many psychiatric disorders have complex biomarkers that direct treatment. Some of these are comorbid, like anxiety plus depression or ADHD plus anxiety. It can be challenging to differentiate between the disorders due to overlapping systems. Machine learning technology may help in more precise diagnosis of disorders. It looks for very specific patterns to help narrow diagnosis. Listen as Dr. Kristen Willeumier joins Dr. Mike Smith to discuss innovations in machine learning to improve psychiatric treatment. Learn more about Dr. Willeumier at www.drwilleumier.com.

You can also create a healthy environment in your home with your skin care products, nutrition habits and air filtering. This helps you age without illness. Whole-Person Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment often focuses on the disease, not the whole person. Outcomes from conventional therapy aren’t always amazing. Lifestyle interventions must be made for optimal success in treating cancer. Treating the whole person means addressing nutrition and lifestyle issues in addition to addressing the cancer. Sleep, stress and emotions play a role in overall health. Listen as Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy joins Dr. Mike Smith to discuss actions that support cancer treatment for best outcomes. Profiling Cancer Cells

Cancer is different from person to person. Each individual responds uniquely to treatment. Functional profiling uses a patient’s own cancer cells to see how they respond to different drugs or drug combinations. This testing takes place outside of a patient’s body. Cancer cells survive longer than other cells. Studying cell death provides insight into treatment. Peer reviewed publications show the success rate of functional profiling at 44 percent improvement at one year of survival.  Listen as Dr. Robert Nagourney joins Dr. Mike Smith to discuss innovations in future cancer treatment.

Celiac Disease vs. Food Sensitivity

You have trouble with bread and pasta. Do you have celiac disease or a food sensitivity? Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten consumption. Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, barley and rye. It is also used to bind processed foods together. Genetic tests can show celiac disease, and many members within a family can have celiac. About one percent of the population has celiac disease, and the vast majority don’t know they have it. People can struggle with symptoms for six to ten years before being diagnosed. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity applies to folks who feel better when they avoid gluten. They do not have celiac disease. Celiac Disease Symptoms Bloating, gas or abdominal pain Diarrhea Constipation General fatigue Itchy skin Tooth discoloration Joint pain Irritability Weight loss Delayed growth in children Fractures and thin bones Migraine headaches Infertility or miscarriages Association with other autoimmune diseases Testing for celiac disease is inexpensive and easy. Request a test from your doctor as soon as you suspect. Better to be cautious than have side effects that cannot be undone. Listen as Dr. Marie Robert joins Dr. Mike Smith to discuss celiac disease and the importance of testing.

Five Potentially Life-Threatening Diseases with no Symptoms

It’s best to get your annual exam to track your body’s changes. Some diseases don’t have obvious symptoms to tip you off to their development. Five Potentially Life-Threatening Diseases High Blood Pressure: American Heart Association classifies 130/80 as high blood pressure. The estimate is that 50 percent of Americans have high blood pressure. Stress reduction and meditation have a positive effect on blood pressure. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV): It is considered the most common sexually-transmitted infection. Over 70% of people are expected to come into contact with the virus. Cervical cancer and some head and neck cancers are attributed to this virus. Having a healthy immune system is beneficial in improving your odds against contracting and developing an HPV-related complication. Pancreatic Cancer: Smokers, drinkers and diabetic individuals have more risk for pancreatic cancer. Sweetened beverages statistically increase your risk. There is no good screening test, and symptoms don’t present until it’s too late. Diabetes: One-fourth of the population over age 65 has diabetes, with type 2 dominating that percentage. Diet and exercise play a large role in the development of diabetes. Vitamin D levels can influence your susceptibility to diabetes. Cut out processed foods. Sleep Apnea: This occurs in both men and women. Heavy evening meals, sleep medications, excessive alcohol consumption and weight increase risk for sleep apnea. A sleep study is used to diagnose this condition. Sleep apnea ups your chances of developing other chronic diseases. Listen as Dr. Christine Horner joins Dr. Mike Smith to share how diet, exercise and lifestyle play a role in all of these diseases.
