Episode 26 – I’m Gonna Give it to Ya! with Ryann, Matt & Marcus
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
You can’t make a podcast without breaking some collar bones and many other things in this week's episode!
It’s the end of the year and the end of season two which means this episode is… barely listenable! The guys talk about a bunch of stuff, then they make fun of stuff, then they talk about more stuff and Ryann asks them some questions about stuff and THEN they talk about some stuff that is different. It’s the perfect episode!
The guys also want to thank you all for listening for the last 26 episodes! It’s been fun as hell and they’ll be back in the new year to waste even more of your time! They promise!

Episode 25 – Three Hundred Pickle Shekels with Matt & Marcus
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
Design trends are like photos of Nathan Lane taking a bath, some folks are OBSESSED with them and many other things in this week's episode!
This week those two very smart geniuses delve into the world of design trends! Apparently, people try to predict the design trends for the coming year and the fellas try to figure out why. Before all that really good show content, they get into Curb Your Enthusiasm, get a quick Reddit update, talk about how much Slack sucks, clients not understanding project parameters, beer cans, saving seagulls by eliminating plastic. envelope art, CYBERTRUCK, the disgusting Dalla Mavericks City Edition Jerseys and a fond farewell to our friend Jerry King.
After a quick break, they dive head-first into somebody’s list of the 14 design trends to watch out for in 2020. Why do people make these lists? We do not know. are they useful? Not a damn chance. Are they entertaining? Not really. Despite all of that they go through a few lists and share their opinion for better or worse. Throw in nonsensical gibberish and baby, that’s a show! Get into it!

Episode 24 – Throbster with Matt & Marcus
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
It takes a village to burn down a barn and many other things in this week's episode! The fellas hop out of their little bubble and go on Reddit to find out a few things about a few things. Before that they talk about Marcus’ new shoes which are pretty cool, they learn what Reddit is from a strange video, discuss how useful traditional websites are these days, discuss the locked-down state of cigarette and cannabis packaging design, take a look at a freak puppy weirdo named Narwhal, look at some freak puppy dog food packaging brought to you by Batman’s friend, almost kind of discuss the new Facebook logo, look at a bunch of cool old design stuff and finally enjoy the splendor of Sir Jerry King!
After a quick break they dive head-first into Reddit to solve the world’s graphic design problems. After trying to figure out what Reddit Coins are they jump into several different threads to see if they can either lend a hand or make people feel bad for asking honest questions. They address logo design, job-hunting, design feedback, stupid business card sizes, interior decorating quandaries and a few more topics before feeling bad about doing good. To get their fury back up they check out Fast Company’s Urban Dictionary Of Design Slang and guess what? It sucks! Throw in a proposed pedophile’s suicide and some respectful references to a child beauty queen’s death and we technically made a show! Eat it!

Episode 23 – Fake Supreme with Jayden from Good News
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
Skate or Die or Whatever and many other things in this week's episode! You thought the last week was self-indulgent? Well buckle the hell up because this week the guys are talking about graphic design in skateboarding and to assist them in their journey they have Jayden from the world-renowned (probably) Good News skate shop. First they discuss Thanos' role in the skate community, the ongoing trend of attacking moving cars (and subsequently getting hit by them), rad and terrible skateparks, a bunch of local references most of you won't get, Pantone conversion, the new 2024 Paris Olympics logo and finally Kanye's unmatched proficiency with Microsoft Word.
After a quick break, the guys and Jayden dig into the meat of the coconut: design within the skateboard industry. They start things off with a quick walk down memory lane and the graphic trends over the decades from the logo-heavy 70s to the vibrant 80s, the copyright-infringing 90s to the mixed bag of the 2000s. They discuss the importance of having a good looking skateboard and what it means to feel connected to the team through the graphics and what those graphics mean to the professionals who also ride them. From there they get into how the Supreme/Hypebeast machine is capitalizing on the aesthetic of the skate world and what it means to remain a legitimate designer/artist in a very particular, and sometimes scornful, industry. Throw in 1000 old skate references most folks won't get and top it all off with a skate graphic game and you technically have an entire episode! Dig it!

Episode 22 – Tom Hardy’s Frightened, Very Cold Penis with Brain Carr
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
It feels like an Arby’s night and many other things in this week’s episode! It’s finally here! The tattoo episode! The guys welcome special guest, and gnarly tattoo artist, Brian Carr to the show to discuss the wide world of tattooing and how it intersects with graphic design. Before all that they get into Sir David Puddy, the importance of celebrating wins with each project, how physical work can be more gratifying than purely digital stuff, NBA jerseys, Moby’s horrifying neck tattoo, and Aaron Carter’s even more horrifying face tattoo! Top it all off with some unforgivable art crimes by dickhead Jerry King and you got an entire thing!
After the break, the fellas get into tattooing! Brian shares how he got his start from non-stop drawing, to getting an apprenticeship and eventually becoming the big, fancy tattoo man he is today! He also gets into his process for each tattoo (or project, it’s no different from design) and how each client is different whether it’s their background, their budget or what they want out of each tattoo and how that’s shaped his approach over time. From there they get into common misconceptions about tattooing, how some folks are easier to deal with than others, what makes a great shop to work at and why Brain still gives a damn. It’s a good episode! We swear!

Episode 21 – I Wonder How Thin that Pen Is with Matt & Marcus
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
They say you can’t spell “Movie Poster” without all the letters required to spell both words correctly and many other things in this week’s episode! This week the scumbags get into the big ol’ world of movie poster design but before getting into something people want to hear they talk about other stuff! Stuff like Seinfeld, the glory of Jason Mantzoukas, movie theater etiquette, proper technique for punching moving cars and sharks, type-based projects which are super-cool and some slide presentation apps which are trying to be super-cool. Top all that with a steaming pile of Jerry King cartoons and we’re good to go!
After the break they get into how movie posters have changed from their inception all the way to this modern, Photoshop-dominated, sewer of hog feces we call show! They take a good look at the fine folks over at Mondo Tees and the Alamo Drafthouse who are carrying the torch of quality movie poster design and discuss why their posters are better than nearly everything generated by Hollywood. After that they take a look at how some movies get totally different posters overseas, watch a video breaking down the science of how movies are phoning it in and wrap it all up with a way too easy horror movie poster quiz. Mix all that together with a grown man’s beard and a bottle of DayQuil and baby, you got yourself a stew! Enjoy!

Episode 18 – I Have More Hats Than I Have Heads with Ryann, Matt & Marcus
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
They say it’s better to burn out than to fade away although fading away does not give you life-shortening hypertension, and many other things in this week’s episode. This week the guys talk about working yourself to the danger zone with their marital guest Ryann but first they jump around a whole mess of topics like a bunch of damn idiots. Topics like the film Summer School, the majesty of hot rods, the fine art of Qi Gong, how animal skulls are so easily accessible these days, the shaming of the American overlord Trump through design, accidentally getting company names wrong and not addressing it on the show, Olympic medals, masturbation suits and even a visit with their old friend Jerry King.
After a quick break, they get into the heart of the matter: burnout. They talk about the telltale signs they each experience when burnout starts creeping it’s nasty ass around, how vacations can be ruined by work even if you’re not working during your vacation, overloading your plate, dealing with other folks screwing with your serenity, the impending doom of deadlines, giving too much of a damn about projects, the seemingly impossible task of letting go of stress at home, cashing in your chips when things get too gnarly and how depression and stress are old friends. If nothing else it was cathartic! Enjoy the misery!

Episode 17 – Creamed Corn: The Trilogy with Matt & Marcus
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
Some idiot once said "Always look on the bright side of life" which is a stupid thing to say, and many other things in this week's episode. This week the fellas are talking about things that bother them but first they get into the majesty of mega-drunk Orson Welles, super-drunk Joe Namath, the delightful Bash Brothers soundtrack, Aleya-proofing future episodes with costly equipment, how to not steal an office in your building, genuinely good public art installations, Cyber Jim Carrey trying to kill pre-meltdown Shelley Duvall, the loveliness of some font websites and other things about other things.
After the break it's time to put on your tear-stained audio sweat pants and open a virtual tub of crystal meth because it's time to feel sorry for yourself! This week the guys open up the flood gates and enjoy a solid chunk of whining about things which are rarely as bad as we make them to be but still deserve their moment in the spotlight. They take Wacom down a much needed peg, wonder why video calls are still a pain in the ass, chastise websites with terribly built forms, talk about the blandness of cannabis packaging, restaurant websites, other designers and a bunch of other crap which are self-imposed problems rather than genuine problems. From there they take a few shots at social media and other things that old people complain about. Was it therapeutic? Maybe. Did they solve anything? Doubtful. Was Piss Christ mentioned? You betcha! It's fun!

Episode 16 – Anaheim Amigos, We Salute You with Aleya & Jordan
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
You can't make an NBA logo without cracking some very basic design rules and many other things in this week's episode. Joined by this weeks guests, Aleya and Jordan, the guys discuss a great many things such as Aleya's deep Italian heritage, a company taking credit for Matt's work, our new almost maybe friend Johnny Vino, how bad TED talks are, an IKEA couch font, Japan's very own Donald McDonald, championship hot dog eating, kombucha an how we're being completely ignored by LIMERICK IRELAND FOR NO GOOD REASON.
After a quick break, everybody gets their fangs out because it's design critique time! This time our target is the NBA and all the horrid logo treasures it contains! First Marcus walks everybody through some of the worst basketball logos this planet has to offer. From acorns to turtles, they cover them all! Then they check out every current NBA logo and discuss whether they make sense, how many ways the typography is awful, how consistency must be a foreign concept and how Mark Cuban can sleep at night knowing the current state of the Mavericks logo. After that, they play a quick game to establish who is the supreme authority on all things NBA branding. Add a few AIDS references, some classic Sicily charm, and it technically constitutes as an episode! Enjoy!

Episode 15 – Janet Riley, The Queen of Wein with Matt & Marcus
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
You can’t spell “Career Advice” without “A Dear Crevice” and many other things in this week’s episode. Operating at a full 60% enthusiasm for this one the fellas get into the correct and also Marcus’ way of referencing “San Francisco,” pooping in the streets, the importance of hot dog-based etiquette organizations, the glory of Man Ramp, how even the most oppressive hate-mongers would probably enjoy shaving with a stylish gay-lovin’ razor and the fäirly böring rebränding öf IKEA.
After a well-deserved break, they introduce a new segment featuring Marcus' most thought-provoking questions for the universe. After a quick segment failure and regrouping, they discuss career advice, both new and old, and how it relates to design. Do the ancient adages still ring true or were those just decent guidelines for a different time? The guys offer up stories and advice for dealing with clients, padding your estimates, pricing accordingly, converting a passion into a job, non-traditional project approaches, reading the room and the never-ending topic of art vs design. Throw in a few tangents, some audio clips and a bunch of notable quotes and you got yourself a stew! Dig it!

Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
??Clients are like buttholes, we all have a bunch of them, and other things in this week’s episode. First the fellas talk about the very terrible quality of the last recording (they fixed everything this week), they thank each city individually for listening to the show, tell a few Sweaty Vedder tales, talk some Apple news, then introduce a new feature solely aimed at shaming one specific man.
??
??After that MENSA round table they get into client rosters and all the intricacies they come along with. How many clients is too many clients? Five to ten? More than ten? Is working for one client the solution? Is there a magic number in there somewhere that will grant us eternal happiness and unlimited wealth? Not likely but they try to figure it out anyways. From there they talk some basketball and Avengers End Game for some reason (one of which made Matt cry like a smacked orphan).

Episode 13 – Wow… Butt Chugging with Miles & Ryann
Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
You can't spell “school” without “cool!” You also can’t spell “school” without “cholos” which actually sounds better but it’s all open to interpretation. Before they get into today’s topic the fellas screw up the intro 4 times, touch on such riveting subjects as a boring local real estate speculation tax, boring local restaurants nobody can remember, pricey wine mixups and butt-chugging for some reason.
After all that… stuff the guys and their guests Miles Chic, Ryann McQuarrie and featuring special guest host Saliks Trebek, talk about graphic design education. They dive into everybody’s education backgrounds, experience, what we should be taught vs what we are taught, getting hired out of school, the effectiveness of a traditional education, and a whole mess of other things. Then they play Graphic Design Jeopardy (for too long) to determine which level of education reigns supreme! Dummies vs Smarties! Fight!

Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
Take this job and… podcast about it for a while? Sure! This episode may be bordering on their most focused yet. The fellas talk about what they’ve been up to since the last show, clarify why there were SO MANY Weinstein jokes last time and publicly shame another podcast. From there they get into animated movies, video game art, indiscriminately murdering what they perceive to be homeless people, shaming another podcast and other design-y stuff. From there they get into their official episode topic: Design jobs. The guys talk about their experience having jobs, losing jobs, having to find new ones and all of the spaces in-between. They get into when you should read the writing on the wall and the dos and don’ts of looking for a new gig. After ALL of that, they read some questions from the listeners and get into a few hate-filled tweets! It’s fun!

Against all sound logic and reasonable thoughts, we have returned! Matt & Marcus, those rascals, are at it again. They talk about where they've been and what the plans are for the podcast moving forward including topics, features, guests and other things which sound incredibly boring when writing them out. They touch on beer, Pauly Shore, other podcasts and that guy from Rudy as well.

Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
Hot boys talking hot fashion! Not really but this week they get into the relationship between design and, for lack of a better term, streetwear with amazing artist Matt Andres. Before that they get into old-school sport jersey design, being exceptionally burnt out, Matt attempts to sell himself to the highest bidder and Marcus is looking forward to the end of a project. Then they dig into what makes “streetwear” cool, who’s buying it, who’s stealing from who, why these things are collectable fetish items, and what it must take in order to ignore trends and stay true to your vision. Episode in
Designers Are the Worst. The Show.
Let the healing begin! This week the guys kick-off their ongoing series "Designer vs Developer" with their old friend and exceptionally talented front-end developer Marc Alonzo. They start things off by getting into the upcoming Super Troopers 2, the long-dead movie Hook, they read some very rude tweets and discuss other nonsense. Then they talk with Marc about how annoying designers can be, trusting developers with the designer's "baby," some cool development tools to make our lives easier, communication, collaboration and what the perfect little studio would be. It's the first step in bridging the divide between both sides of the brain! Get into it!
