Serving God is an experience in life. God knows who we are, of what we have need, and He knows what lies ahead. Believers in Jesus Christ are to put their total trust and faith in God.

Jesus gives three spiritual disciplines for Christians to experience. Each of these are to be done properly so we can be rewarded by God. He does not want us to be a hypocrite-a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc. that he or she does not actually possess esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs. Jesus desires obedience in these disciplines.

Jesus continues speaking to the disciples and now gives them the reason for living better than the Pharisees do. He begins with "You have heard" but turns it around and says, "But I say." Jesus intends for us to listen to Him so we may live a better life than religious people.

Jesus, after giving us the directions on how to live joyfully in Him, goes on to show us how this is to be lived out. We are citizens of the kingdom of God and there are certain ways He expects us to live. We are to live boldly and shine brightly in a world of darkness and make a difference.

True Love Came Down

Today, we begin a series on what the Gospels first had to say concerning Jesus Christ. As we approach His birth, I thought it would be good to concentrate on what the writers of the gospels said.

Leaning on God

In order to reach your world for Christ, you need to engage your culture. Engage is defined-to occupy the attention or efforts of another person or persons, to attract or hold fast. This is what we need to do as followers of Christ, engage people.

Speed the Light-Youth Day

Last week we began examining this verse and looked at "Come to Me." Who is to come to Christ? What does it mean when it states those who labor and are heavily burdened?

Come unto me...

"The King is coming!" the boy shouted. All eyes turned and saw the King as he rode in looking majestic on his horse. The people bowed as the king went by. He tried to speak to them and asked them to rise and go with him, but the people simply kept their heads bowed and remained kneeling as if they had not heard the king's invitation. The king wanted to be a part of their lives in a more intimate way, but the people steadfastly refused him. Gladly, though, there were those who heard and accepted the king's invitation. When he came by, as the bowed reverently, he asked them to come and they gladly accepted the invitation and became a part of the King's family and enjoyed the privilege of belonging to him. Today, we need to hear and accept the King's invitation to join Him because we are special to Him. We must not ignore Him, but gladly embrace what He has in store for us. Jesus, our king, is calling to us. He has given us a special assignment and we must heed Him. Our identity now belongs in Him. We have seen we are the children of God, but now must learn more of who we are.

Last week, we examined verses 1-14 from this chapter and found we needed a mind to work to see God's work move forward. Despite persecution, roadblocks, or any other hindrances, we must continue the work of God. In doing so, we must remember, 1. God frustrates the plans of our enemies, 2. God will fight for us, and 3. God sees us as we continue to the work He has placed before us.

God is calling His church out, calling us to be His hands and feet to a world that needs His touch. God is calling our church to be the hands and feet to our world. In this passage of Scripture, I find that it gives us what we need to accomplish just that very ideal-to be called out and go into the world around us.

People need hope. They look for it each day even if they do not realize it. We have the hope they need and the mercy that comes from God. This passage of Scripture shows you how we can live in the new hope and new mercies from God each day.

Paul's theme in this letter to the Ephesians is the church. Paul is showing the Ephesus church how to be prepared to live for Christ and walk in freedom. This will show us how to have freedom in Him as we serve Him.
