Giving Disabled Employees an “Evenbreak’ in the Jobs Market.
Recruitment for disabled workers is the theme of our latest podcast. Since many members of our community experience varying amounts of discrimination in their working lives this is a vital topic for us. One company that has been making an impact for the last decade is Evenbreak which is a job board specifically targeted at the disability market. All employee offers on this site are open to people who have a disability whether it is mobility or sensory. If you can do the job then you are applying on an even playing field and you have the reassurance that if an employer has paid to list the vacancy on a disability job board then they won’t be surprised if you turn up for your interview in a wheelchair. In many ways this is like using a disabled dating site in that members of the community have been clearly identified in advance so there are no false expectations.
Our guest is Jane Hatton who founded the Evenbreak site and she herself is disabled so understands at first hand many of the issues faced by disabled in the workplace. Jane is a wonderful advocate for the disabled community, realising that having a job is so much more than just having income. A job is about personal fulfilment and and respect, a point she is eager to put forward in our talk. I am always of the belief that when you have a place in the workforce it prepares the groundwork for everything else that matters – romance, family dreams about the future. I think it is heartening that so many large companies have partnered with Evenbreak and hopefully this initiative will filter through the community and ensure that our disabled community will find acceptance in sizes and types of company.
You can connect with Evenbreak on social media Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and on their website.

Independent Living – That’s The Secret to Living with a Disability.
In this podcast episode about independent living we talk to Ms Frances Leckie who is the founder and brains behind the independentliving website which is one of the most established resources for the UK disabled community. Coming from a marketing background, Frances noticed that there was an information gap in the market for adaptive products for the disabled. So she slowly built a resource over the past 20 years that helps the disabled find products and services that enable them to live an independent life. Her fascinating site covers everything from stairlifts to adaptive bathrooms and offers visitors an unique email information service.
Frances Leckie from Independentliving.
Here. at disabilitymatch we have always campaigned for our disabled community to be empowered to fulfil their lives and very often that depends on having an environment that is ‘disability friendly’ so that you can relax and socialise and build a happy future. As Leckie points out in the interview, there have been some amazing advances in adaptive technology over the last 2 decades. Just a few hours at shows like NAIDEX or a look at the Remap website can be a real eye-opener on just how far the adaptive living industry has moved on.
Adaptive bathroom
I was particularly impressed with just how ‘hands on’ Frances is with her many thousands of site users. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for her and her team. This makes such a change from the glossy sites which offer almost nothing in terms of service or client ethos. One really gets the feeling that almost any query you can have about adapting your home, your car or your hobbies to work alongside your disability would be met with a smile on their site.

Disability Information – How a Printed Publication Embraces the Digital Age
In a world where disability information has moved rapidly onto digital formats there are still some brilliant successes using the tried and tested methods of print distribution. The old-established (one might even say ‘venerable’) publication for the disability market is ‘Able Magazine’ published out from Scotland but covering the entire UK. Not that ‘Able’ has rested on its laurels as the leading printed magazine for our market it has also moved very strongly along a digital path both in its web presence and its social media. I was lucky enough to get their Social Media guru Claudia Foxcroft to be a guest on our podcast to find out what impact their social media was having on the UK disability world.
Claudia explained how social media gives the publication an immediacy and ‘newsy’ feel that is difficult to achieve with just a printed product. So, her work complements the in-depth editorial that the readership really appreciates. A quick glance at their website will show just how much great information they can pack into their digital offering with interesting and newsworthy videos that can’t be captured by the printed word. The website also offers magazine subscribers a digital version so they can read the full magazine content from their laptop, pad or phone.
Claudia Foxcroft Head of Social Media.
Claudia is also responsible for the abundance of quality content on their facebook page which is followed by more than 4000 people and a credit to a magazine with 25 years serving the community. Their twitter page has a huge following of over 30.000 tweeters which they have built up over their 10 years on this platform. Here at disabilitymatch we appreciate just how much work goes into providing great regular content for social media and Claudia’s team obviously go to a lot of trouble to provide varied disability information for their followers. We hope that this podcast will encourage you to engage with ‘Able’ and get great ideas on activities you can incorporate into your dating life. You should also enter their competitions which often feature free trips that you can take your partner on.

Enjoy University Even With a Disability.
The university years are very important in a young person’s development. if you spent your life with a disability, maybe using a wheelchair and relying on your close family for support to deal with everyday living the the prospect of going off to a campus miles from home can be a really daunting experience. you will you cope? Will the care system help and allow you to benefit fully from university life? Even for able-bodied youth the move from home to campus can be difficult enough so how can a young person who is disabled deal with this huge challenge?
In this podcast episode we talk to Chris Benoit-Pool who is a director at Ask Jules which is a family based organisation helping young people deal with their care needs whilst at university. I ran into Chris and his father when I was visiting the NAIDEX show last month and he was kind enough to come on this podcast to talk about the services they can offer young disabled students. I was especially impressed with this company when I visited their stand and saw just how brilliantly they connected with their target audience.
A service like Askjules is very appropriate for our disabilitymatch community since the carer can help a young person navigate sites like disabilitymatch.co.uk and even give emotional support in choosing suitable dates and helping the client prepare themselves for their big dating adventure. It is almost like being on the ‘Undateables‘ where you have a TV production assistant by your side to make certain that you show your best side to your match. This can help prevent the relationship despondency that all young daters experience at one time or another. So if you are preparing yourself for university ior college or you know someone who is, you would finds the askjules.co.uk service very handy and they will offer you excellent advise whether or not you actually become a client.

How to Date Someone Autistic – Special Autism Episode.
In this Spring episode we have the pleasure to interview a very special lady from Slovakia – Barbora Henson Gri? who is a young creative woman married to an autistic English guy. This has given her a very special insight into how the autistic brain works in matters of romance and dating. She has written 2 books especially about autism and dating – ‘20 Reasons to date an autistic guy and ’20 Reasons to date an autistic girl.’
Barbora Henson Gri?
These books are written with a lightness and joy that makes them a real pleasure to download and they show very clearly what you can expect if the object of your affections is on ‘the spectrum’. TV programmes like ‘The Undateables’ give a small insight into dating someone with autism or aspergers but that is always from an ‘entertainment’ viewpoint to amuse or inspire the viewer. It is very different in ‘real life’ where we are all looking for someone to be happy with. At disabilitymatch we have thousands of autistic members covering all parts of the spectrum. Every individual is different but I think that Barbora touches on many salient points drawing from her own experience of being with an autistic guy and having grown up with a somewhat autistic sister.
Barbora is the latest in a stream of wonderful guests from all over the world who have helped make our podcast a popular download from iTunes. On April 26th I will be talking at NAIDEX at the NEC. I will be advising our disabled community on how to get the most from their online dating. Last year we had quite a few attendees with autism and after my long talks with Barbora I feel that I can bring some excellent insider advice to help then be even more successful in building romantic relationships online.

Pony Trekking in a Wheelchair – Crazy Inventor Makes it Possible.
So welcome to our first podcast of 2018. This is a single interview podcast rather than our old style 2 interview episodes. I think this will be our regular format for the coming period since it enables me to get out podcasts on a more frequent basis rather than wait around to group together guest interviewees. This episode we meet Simon Mulholland from PonyAxes which is an unique service for wheelchair users who wish to experience the freedom of pony trekking in Scotland.
Simon Mulholland and Obama
According to Simon, his amazing trekking carriage will take any weight of wheelchair and can take clients along beaches right up to the local seals. This opens up a whole new dimension of a travel experience for many of you and at a very reasonable cost. Simon charges £250 per day pony trekking in a wheelchair and normally the price is spread among several wheelchair users either coming as a group of friends or from an organisation.
Simon is very quick to point out just how helpful the Scottish authorities have been in his enterprise which contrasts strongly with the many restrictions he faced South of the Border.
I think this is a wonderful service and having chatted to Simon I would recommend it wholeheartedly to our disabilitymatch community. you can reach Simon on twitter @ponyaccess or on the ponyaxes.com website.

Robotics For Spinal Injuries and Two ‘Thumbs Up’ For Disability Horizons.
Welcome to our 17th episode of the disabilitymatch podcast. We are now in Summer 2017 and I am preparing for my Summer break. I will be away from desk for a bit although I will be available on twitter @disabilitymatch or by email david@podcast.disabilitymatch.co.uk. So in this podcast we have a catch up chat with Martyn Sibley from disabilityhorizons and a look at a very exciting development in rehab for spinal injuries. Let me apologise that some of the sound quality is not great which I put down to some gremlins in our recording system – my techs are investigating.
Martyn Sibley
It is a great time to catch up with Martyn Sibley as he has recently been chosen as the 3rd top person on the disabled power list which he truly desrves. If anyone in this community of ours deserves a ‘gong’ he would get my vote. It is for this reason I am happy to be a cheerleader for Martyn’s new idea to be a supporter of his work and make a positive contribution to developing his amazing community resource. I encourage you to visit his special page to pledge a small financial amount to help disability horizons continue to grow and help you, the UK disabled community.
Rewalk in action.
Our technology report this month focuses on a truly innovative company called Rewalk which sums it up in a word. Based on Israeli research and technology their product enables people with spinal cord and lower body disability to get up from their wheelchair and walk. Ok, it is not cheap (around £60k) but normally it is provided as part of an insurance settlement after an accident or through sponsorship. Because it contributes a great deal towards to an overall improvement in health this offsets many ongoing medical costs and makes the price more realistic. The rewalk team will help potential clients put together appropriate finance and provide videos and health assessments that can be used in insurance cases. They also offer a free examination to see if the system would be suitable in each case.
On a more general note I would mention an article I just wrote for the ambitious about autism site all about dating with autism, a subject dear to my heart. I have been blogging for many years and through the power of the internet I like to think that I am making a contribution to helping our community get more fun out of their disability lifestyle.

Wheelchair Dancing and Rock’n Roll Special.
Wheelchair dance in action
The other week I was lucky enough to attend the NAIDEX show at the NEC where I was a speaker talking about dating and disability. While I was there I met up with the Wheelchair dance association crowd who were doing some amazing demonstrations of wheelchair dancing. I was absolutely determined to have them on our podcast. So, we have an excellent interview with their ‘main man’ Patrick McGeough who runs the WDSA and spends his life promoting wheelchair dance for all members of the disabled community. Patrick, is in a wheelchair himself, having suffered a stroke in his teens. We find out how wheelchair dance works at an international competitive level and how wheelchairs can be modified to improve the ‘twirls’ on the dance floor. Contact them on Twitter at @wdsauk or email info@wdsa.co.uk
Dom Smith from Soundsphere
Another wonderful discovery at NAIDEX was the ebullient Dom Smith who helps run ‘Disabled Entrpreneurs‘ and is a highly successful music journalist and the creative force behind the soundsphere online music magazine. Dom has spent the last 7 or so years actively helping young disabled persons get a statt in the music and media business using his own life experiences and his amazing industry contacts. The Independent on Sunday’ dubbed him as one of the hundred happiest people in the country’ and having chatted to him I would not disagree – he is a force of nature. If you are interested in getting hold of Dom he is contactable on social media @Soundsphere @disabledents @d0m_Sm1th and the web address is http://www.disabledentrepreneurs.co.uk
Our podcast is growing very quickly now and we have a wonderful batch of guests lined up for our next episode in May. Please give us feeback david@podcast.disabilitymatch.co.uk and please share us on your social media.

NAIDEX Show Preview and Discussion About CPRS
The NAIDEX show is coming at the end of March in Birmingham and it is under new management. I have spoken a lot to the new event organisers Prysm, and they seem to be very much on the ball. Well, they have asked me to speak at the show on 2 days;-)
I am in good company on the podium; our great friend Martyn Sibley is speaking and also Victoria Abbott-Fleming form the Burning Nights Charity and is a guest in this podcast episode.
Josie Carnaby
We also chat to Josie Carnaby from Prysm who tells us what new features we can expect at the 2017 show. I am certainly looking forward to the event and I feel it should be the highlight of the year if you are disabled and want to know the very latest in technological advances and care services that are available. Do attend my talks if you can I will be speaking on Tuesday and Thursday about online dating and how to get the best from your membership at disabilitymatch.

Mental health, Multiple Sclerosis and Workplace Disability Training.
Welcome to our 14th podcast episode and the first of the new year. We have a bumper podcast for you discussing a wide rage of current topics. Firstly we discuss the issue of mental health which has figured recently a a major part of the Government’s agenda. We meet Ricky from ‘Mentally Sound’ which is a campaigning podcast for Mental Health North East which offers informative, challenging, engaging and entertaining show featuring a variety of interviews, news, features, debate, comedy, poetry, discussion, drama and music around the theme of mental health with contributors from all walks of life.

One of the many problems experienced by MS sufferers is the accessibility both at home in the UK and when travelling overseas. We welcome a very powerful and original voice in this discussion – Stephanie Scawen a renowned journalist and blogger living between Malaysia and the UK. Stephanie talks with us about MS and her own medical history and how she has learnt to deal with the frustrations of living out of a suitcase in hotels that do not pay attention to the needs of the disabled.
Stephanie Scawen
We hope that Stephanie will talk to us regularly about MS and the problems of accessibility and the high cost of medication. I am very interested in the many positive advances in MS treatment and I will be discussing this with Stephanie in future episodes of our podcast.
Last, but by no means least, we welcome Daniel Williams from the Visualise Consultancy in Cardiff. From Daniel’s own personal experience and extensive market research, he found that many employers and employees were unsure on how to correctly assist with, or communicate effectively with people who have disabilities. This gave Daniel the motivation to establish a training and consultancy company to contribute and raise awareness in making a positive change within organisations and society. Daniel would be very happy to receive input from our listeners about disability in the workplace.
Daniel Williams
If you wish to be in touch with Daniel to tell him about your own experiences. either as a disabled worker or as an employer with disabled staff please do be in touch with him. His contact information is at the end of this post.
I really hope you enjoy our podcast which I produce as a unique resource for the disabilitymatch membership and for the disabled community in the UK and around the world. We have many podcast fans in The United States, Australia and Canada. Please share our podcast link and feel free to embed it in your own blog.

Disabled Living - Meet 'Wheelchair Steve' and Learn About Winter Sunshine Trips.
Our latest podcast episode has an extended interview with an iconic figure in the disability community – Steve Wilkinson, better known as ‘Wheelchair Steve’. Steve tells us about his involvement with the world of mobility and how he has launched ‘regional ambassadors‘ to help wheelchair users get the most out of their travel around the UK. This adds a new level of informed local information to regular resources such as Trip Advisor or Euan’s Guide. Steve is still busy recruiting ambassadors to his team so if you think you could be a helpful addition do please contact Steve steve@wheelchairsteve.com and he will be pleased to hear from you. We also learn from Steve all about International Wheelchair Day and the impact it has had around the globe.
Wheelchair Steve
We also have an excellent contribution from Gillian at disabled holidays who tells us all about the joys of Winter travel and how being disabled does not prevent you from having fun on the ski slopes. This is very useful because many people believe that being disabled puts a snow-filled holiday out of their reach. Even more importantly we learn that ski accessibility does not necessarily make a holiday more expensive and in many cases there is no premium for this type of vacation. As always, Gillian is very happy to give individual advice to our podcast listeners and you can benefit from her many years of experience in disabled travel opportunities.
This is a very busy time here at disabilitymatch dating as we enter the party season and singles are trying hard to find new friends and lovers for the holiday season. This is a great time to become more active on our site and send out lots of emails and become ‘social’ with people who really want to meet you. Do please visit us on facebook and follow us on twitter @disabilitymatch. Please enjoy our podcast which is exclusive to disabilitymatch and share us on all your social media.

Accessible Travel and an Expert Preview of the Rio Paralympics.
Martyn Sibley
In our latest podcast we are looking at the new developments from Martin Sibley and his team at disabilityhorizons.com who are quickly establishing ‘accessible traveller‘ as the ‘goto’ source for enjoying your travel adventures whatever your level of mobility. Martin has a wealth of personal experience travelling the globe in his wheelchair so he brings to the market an unparalleled level of expertise in the form of a monthly newsletter. We also ask Martin about Disability United , his new campaigning vehicle for the disabled community.
Paralympics Preview
Now that we have calmed downed from an amazing Rio Olympics our thoughts turn to the Paralympic Games which have been beset with problems and concerns this year. Writing this post 2 weeks before the games open I am, of course, worried that they will not live up to the expectations raised by the magnificent 2012 London games but we have asked our expert Michelle Weltman from London Marathon to give us her take on the situation.
Michelle Weltman
Michelle heads up the events at London Marathon and is very knowledgeable on Paralympic sport and gives us a helicopter view of what to expect in Rio. The UK is sending out a full contingent of athletes in a wide range of sports including athletics, canoeing, swimming, judo and archery and should bring back a healthy clutch of medals from the trip. It is a shame that Russia won’t be present and that several other nations will have funding issues that are not their fault but even still it will be a sporting feast for all of us back home.

Battling BiPolar, Scooting Around and Some New Intimacy.
Welcome to our latest podcast episode. as always the topics we discuss are wide and varied. This time we have an interview with a young woman in the United States who has bi-polar disorder and also suffers from Aspergers. Yet, with all these challenges she blogs actively as ‘Beautifully Bipolar’ which I do recommend you read. She also writes @defyingshadows which is another recommended link
Alex from Beautifully Bipolar
In our innovation section of the show we take a look at a cute mobility scooter produced by e-foldi in the UK. The scooter was one of the highlights of the recent NAIDEX show in Birmingham and I was really pleased to interview the charming Sumi Wang who is the founder of the company.
Last, but by no means least, we welcome back Robin Wilson-Beattie our ‘Sexpert’ from the USA who has been AWOL for the last month exploring her exciting new relationship. Freshly invigorated, Robin brings us up to speed on how to communicate with your new partner especially if you are disabled dating a non-disabled partner.
Our ‘sexpert’ Robin showing how to enjoy toys.
Robin knows more about ‘Sex-Tech’ than anyone else I have met and she loves to explore ways in which sex toys can be used to increase pleasure for the disabled. Robin is also very happy to answer any questions that you might have an these topics. You can contact her through us or on twitter @sexabled.

Disability in the Workplace and Images Of Disability For 80 Years.
This is a big occasion for us. We have now produced the 10th edition of our podcast and established its position within the disabled community in England as well as in other countries. When I started this project last year I had absolutely no experience of radio broadcasting and the first couple of episodes were produced on ‘ a wing and a prayer’. The first thing that struck me was just how helpful the disabled community was to my new project. I had an established following on Twitter who were essential to getting great guests for the show. Frankly, without social media I would have never got the podcast off the ground. Now it is easier to persuade great guests to give up their time to chat to me since we have a whole range of interviews under our belt.
Toby Mildon
This episode features 2 very different guests; we have a top diversity expert from the BBC, Toby Mildon and Rachael Stamper who is Heritage manager at the Queen Elizabeth Foundation – one of our most respected charities. This is incidentally a great show which is on this week and runs until the 24th of April. There are some fascinating archive photographs from the QEF workshop and even a real iron lung for the visitor to examine.
Rachael Stamper

I am deeply honoured that they have contributed their precious time to be on our show and share their thoughts with us. Over the past months we have been equally honoured by people such as Michelle Weltman from the London Marathon, Martyn Sibley from Disability Horizons, our sexpert Robin Wilson-Beattie, our travel expert Gillian Moorhouse-Hoole and many other great personalities from the world of disability. We have also crossed barriers when we interviewed Kate Caryer from the “Unspoken Project’ who has no biological voice. Listeners will recall that we also featured amazing inventions to help the visually impaired and the paralysed get the most out of our modern world.
Next week I will be visiting the NAIDEX show in Birmingham to see the latest in disabled technology and to talk to people who are making a difference to the disabled community. Our good friend Martyn Sibley will be speaking at NAIDEX so I will be able to hear his speech which I am sure will be a highlight of the show. Then I will be cheering on the athletes in the London Marathon and hopefully interviewing them in our next episode. So, I really hope you enjoy this podcast and share us on all your social media.

The Speechless Can Speak, the Paralysed Can Text and We Learn About Wheelchair Racing.
In this podcast episode we give speech to the speechless when we interview Kate Caryer from the Unspoken Project which is an innovative theatre group with disabled and non disabled actors. Kate communicates through a artificial speech device much like Stephen Hawkins but even with its limitations I think it makes for a very interesting and informative interview.
Kate Caryer the Unspoken Project
The Unspoken Project is seeking funding for ‘Speechless, the Musical’ which tells the typical coming of age story of a teenager on the run from her over bearing parents and their limited view of her adulthood; her need for a voice being heartily ignored and her being subjected to highly dubious medical practices that promise a miracle cure. If you are interested in funding this through Kickstarter have a look at this link
.
Can you imagine life without a smartphone? These devices have become such an integral part of our lives that to be deprived of access for even a day would seem like a real hardship for most of us. But there are many members of the disabled community who cannot operate a smartphone and are cut off from social media, SMS and even ‘Angry Birds’ – all the things that the majority take for granted. This is why I am so excited by the innovation of Sesame Enable, an Israeli company who have developed a smartphone that you can operate by speech or by head movements. When I first found out about this technology I was determined to interview the manufacturer and find out more. You can listen to my interview in this podcast episode.
With the London Marathon just around the corner we decided it was a perfect time to start a ‘disability sports’ section in our podcast and we were fortunate enough to get Michelle Weltman who is the elite wheelchair coordinator at the London Marathon. Nobody knows more about disability sports than Michelle and she brings her inside knowledge to our podcast and tells uys what to look forward to at this Years’ Marathon. The link for the Sepentine event that Michelle mentions is www.swimserpentine.co.uk and the link for the marathon itself is www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.co.uk.
We are also delighted that our good friend Martyn Sibley has published his book ‘Everything is Possible’ . It is a very good read and his is the story of the scrapes, skirmishes and silly situations that one man and his wheelchair can get into, given a little self belief and a whole lot of planning.
You can buy the book online at this link. I am still reading through the book but it is an engrossing read that I can thoroughly recommend to all of you.

We meet Sib who is a budding film maker and disability campaigner. Sib has Autism but he certainly hasn’t let that stand in his way. To find out more about Sib you can visit his Film2240 website or follow him on Twitter @Film2240. This is a video that Sib has produced about disability issues.
We welcome Rob Lott, head of communications from the Calvert Trust in Exmoor who tells us about the work of his charity and as you can see from their video they have an extraordinary range of activities for the disabled community. If you want to book a holiday you need to call them on 01598 763221 so they can discuss your exact holiday dreams and practical requirements. They are a charity and we hope you will give them your fullest support – they are doing an amazing job.
Finally, we have Robin who has been talking at the AVN (adult show) in Las Vegas and demonstrating how disabled people can fully enjoy their sex lives. We talk to Dan Burden from Spinal Injuries Association about the help his organisation can offer on helping men and women with spinal injuries find rewarding work in the mainstream workforce.

Then last but by no means least we have the unique Robin from our sexpert from the U.S.A. Robin was visiting London this week and I had the enormous pleasure of spending time with her. Robin. who has travelled the world with her spinal disability thanks to her walker had her mobility put to a difficult test negotiating the London underground network. I felt quite ashamed how inadequate our accessibility is for travellers like Robin. I sometimes overlook how unhelpful our transport can be since I do not have a mobility disability myself. Surely, almost 20 years into the new millennium we can achieve something more inclusive.

So, all in all you can see just what a bumper podcast we have produced for you. We hope you enjoy and, please share us on all your social media.
