Ep. 47 - Why You Shouldn’t be an Entrepreneur

This week on Discover the Hustle Podcast we talk about why you shouldn’t become an entrepreneur. If you have expectations of any of the things below, we’ll explain to you why entrepreneurialism isn’t for you. Good news is that’s okay. It’s not for everyone and that’s for the best! Here’s the list: You like working fixed hours You expect a business to make you rich overnight You don’t want to give up your paycheck You want to maintain your social life and have work-life balance You’re concerned with the fear of missing out and what people will say/think about you You like structure and expect your tasks to be laid out for you each day You work solely for the money with no real purpose Again, it’s not supposed to be for everyone. The important thing is you find who you’re supposed to be and then capitalize on that. Ep. 46 - Ordinary People are Extraordinary: Lessons Learned from Steven Hannah, former CEO of The Onion

This week on Discover the Hustle Podcast we talk about the Wisconsin Innovation Awards that we recently attended. Shoutout to ActiveEDU for taking home the Innovation Award for the Education category! The importance of this episode is the discussion we have about ordinary people. Steve Hannah, the former CEO of The Onion, was the keynote speaker at the event. He spoke on different lessons learned from his mother. One of our favorite takeaways was the fact that you can learn from everyone and that everyone has an interesting background. No matter whether they’re a celebrity or just your neighbor, there is something interesting going on in their lives. Steve taught us that it’s important to just talk with people and figure out what that interesting thing(s) is.  Twitter: @brad_ploch & @dylanmparks Instagram: @brad_ploch & @dylanmparks Snapchat: @brad.ploch & @dylanmparks Facebook: facebook.com/brad.ploch & facebook.com/dylanmichaelparks DiscoverTheHustle.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LodosBtoB0A Intro music by: JPB – High https://soundcloud.com/anis-jay

Ep. 42 Key Lessons from Cory Gregory and Marc Lobliner

This week on Discover the Hustle podcast we talk about our FAVORITE lessons learned from Cory Gregory and Marc Lobliner. If you haven’t heard these episodes you can watch the video version of Cory here and Marc here. This is a short episode so I’ll keep the show notes short. From the Cory Gregory interview, Dylan said that the fact that you can become anyone you want to really came through. Cory was a coal miner at one point. He lived in a trailer with his mom. He just never had anything given to him. He proved through work that you can become whoever you want to be. I thought that the concept of daily perspective was fantastic. The fact that Cory drove around looking for his father only to find out that he passed away just gives you goosebumps thinking about it. He said that nothing could ever be worse than that day, so anything else that happens in his life isn’t even comparable. It allows him to focus on the good things in life and easily put away the negatives. From the Marc Lobliner interview, Dylan said that the amount of time and effort he puts into his family was crazy. Marc is an unbelievably busy human and the fact that he can commit so much to his family is amazing. We saw it first hand when we were at his house in Illinois. It shows that no matter what you have going on you can always make an effort and be present for the things that are most important in your life. I thought that the concept of going 120 was great. The immediate day after Dylan and I started to make sure that we were going 120 in our lives. We’ve had the best workouts of our lives since then. Every time I feel like slacking or letting myself not give the best effort, I remind myself the concept of 120 and it fires me right back up. These interviews really have been some of the coolest things we have ever done. We plan on continuing to interview really great people that you all will be able to learn. I can’t tell you how much we learn just from spending an hour with these individuals. I wouldn’t change it for the world! We hope that you enjoyed this episode and look forward to hearing what you think! Ep. 40 - Interview with Cory Gregory from CoryGFitness.com - Legacy & Wake Your A** Up

This week on Discover the Hustle Podcast we interview Cory Gregory. Cory is from a generation of coal miners, the former Co-founder of MusclePharm, the Co-host of Activ8Radio Podcast, and the Author of Mindset Manual. He’s also a powerlifter, 11 time cover model, he squats everyday and is infamous for the snapchat line ‘Wake Your Ass Up.’ We talked about the importance of surrounding yourself with good people, building a legacy, and waking up every morning with your mission in mind. From a very young age Cory realized that school wasn’t his thing. He was receiving poor grades and fell asleep during his SAT. He knew he was meant to do something great within the fitness industry. Because he so fed up with being poor, he knew he had to do something big in order to escape the current situation he was living in. Once he had this mindset shift he started waking up at 3:30-4am and just started hustling. Everyday became a reason to live his life to the absolute fullest. What’s cool now is the people he lifts with everyday don’t care what he’s done with his career or life, because they’re just in there every single day trying to beat him. Cory has always loved this type of competition and continues to work everyday to beat everyone else. There’s never any question about his character, what he’s done, and what he’ll continue to do. When he wakes up in the morning he knows what he wants and he goes after it relentlessly. The passion he has for his goals keeps him focused, allowing him to rarely fatigue in this pursuit. We really hope that you enjoy this episode. Cory is a phenomenal person and we truly learned tons from him in just an hour long conversation. Please reach out to home on social media and show him some love. You can find him on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat as @corygfitness. Make sure to head over to his website corygfitness.com to check out all that he has to offer including his book ‘Mindest Manual’. Ep. 38 - 100% Focus with Dan Brosman - Discussion about startups and lessons learned

This week on Discover the Hustle Podcast we interview Dan Brosman. Dan graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh with a major in Human Resource Management, and an emphasis in Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management and Financial Services in May of 2015. While there, he was very actively involved on campus - especially with the Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization in which he led as President during his Senior year.  By being involved with CEO, he has been inspired to work on multiple startups while a student (which he discusses later), and is currently working with his third startup, ActiveEDU. As he works on ActiveEDU 24/7, Dan also finds time to work as a Program Manager for the globally recognized Center for Entrepreneurship at UW Oshkosh and assist other students with developing out their entrepreneurial ventures.   Dan’s entrepreneurial journey, however, started at a young age. He ran through his life from young entrepreneur to where he’s at now with the other startups. Some key highlights from his life thus far: He learned early to value hard work by holding multiple positions all throughout high school. He ran the school store where he set the record for sales to date. He enrolled at UWO where he saw Craig Culver speak and joined the CEO Board. He launched his nightlife app Sizzle that achieved significant downloads in the short couple weeks that it was live. With Sizzle, Kevin Harrington, from ABC’s Shark Tank, even said that Sizzle was ready to fund and scale up. During college he was also involved in the creation/startup of two other startups. ActiveEDU is one of those businesses. We also talked about Gary Vee’s What To Do After College Video. Dan also talks about some of his experiences, big goals, how he executes on small tasks, and his insane skill for organization. Some important takeaways from these discussions: He learned that he was born to thrive in a startup environment where he can see his action’s direct impact on the organize and it’s vision. As far as goals go, he works to be able to help his family to not have to worry. He wants to give back to those who have helped him thus far. Dan suggests that you write your goals down, reverse engineer them, decide what you need to do each day and start executing. Self development is a recommendation for everyone, because it will help you learn what you need to achieve these goals. He learned that he needed to not focus 10% of his attention on 10 different things, but focus in 100% on the most important thing at hand. Dan also learned that he needed to be able to just move on and persevere through the failures. Dan uses his ability to be insanely organized to give himself a competitive advantage over others. He has a special knack for creating detailed processes for ActiveEDU, organizing the backend items, and developing guidelines for moving forward. Another skill that Dan enjoys is design. He enjoys creating outlines for websites, pricing sheets, and other creative imagery that can be shared on social media or used as website design. Childhood heroes/mentors - Parents, Business Teacher from Neenah HS, Neighbors (owners of CUSA) Favorite book - Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco Favorite Movie - The Social Network & Wolf of Wall Street Hobbies - Experiences, local events, outdoors, basketball. Why does Dan hustle? He wants to complete everything that he set forth for himself. His goal is to turn his dreams into reality and he truly wants to be looked up to as a role model for others as a successful entrepreneur. If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be? Surround yourself with good people. As hard as it may be it is always for the better. It will set you up for success in the long run. Reach out to Dan on ALL Social Media’s @DanBrosman Head over to his website to find some inspirational posters (www.danbrosman.com/inspiration)

Ep. 37 - It’s all about the Hustle - Jordan Rhodes, CEO of ActiveEDU

This week on Discover the Hustle we interviewed Jordan Rhodes. Jordan has his BBA in Marketing, his MBA in Business Administration, he is the, CEO of ActiveEDU, he is the Director of Globally Recognized Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) and he helped a company grow from 0 to $150,000 in monthly revenue via digital marketing consulting. He was also responsible for the creation of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (UWO CEO). Before that even, Jordan’s first entrepreneurial venture was selling gum to classmates in 7th grade. That lasted until his teacher’s banned him from doing so. After hanging around a poor crowd, Jordan found himself applying to UWO to pursue a degree in business. This is where UWO CEO Club was created. After graduation he went to work for a financial planning company that his mom started. Around the same time he was able to raise some funding to create the CEI. Quickly he went from $6 in his bank account and living in his mom’s basement to running this new Center. Jordan also discussed a few of his other entrepreneurial ventures. One of which he considered a huge failure/turning point in his life. Due to some changes in policies his financial services business didn’t turn out the way he’d hoped. He relied on his mastermind group and family to help deal with the downside of the most recent failure. He used this failure to learn that he should focus on something he genuinely cares about to make a difference. Jordan then dives more into ActiveEDU’s backstory and how it began. It was created through his own self-confidence issues, because he wanted to find a solution for these kids to not have to go through the same things he did. He found that his passion for fitness really helped relieve any mental stresses or issues that he had going on. ActiveEDU has recently helped teachers get their students active for half a million minutes over the course of the last 4-5 months. After discussing ActiveEDU, we dive into the importance of mastermind groups and close friends. Our personal mastermind group has been great and will continue to be great for accountability and focus on goals. Speaking of goals, we asked Jordan about his life goals. His big thing is all about leaving a legacy and impact on the world. He truly wants to build an organization around impacting lives. And on the accountability aspect, we occasionally play a game called “Ooh Kill Em.” Basically, we list or goals out on a white board and and set a timer for an hour. The person who knocks out the most goals, receives something financial, or a reward of some kind. It’s a great way of encouraging that extra hustle factor. One thing, that we also talked about around this time was the focus on the big goal at the end. Jordan has accomplished many things with ActiveEDU, but said that success won’t come until there is an exit of some kind or ActiveEDU is responsible for significantly impacting the lives of children everywhere. One resounding piece of information you can pull away is that, Jordan believes in hustling. He wants people on his team who are committed to working for what they want. It’s not about what you know, who you know, or who you are, but how hard you work. You can teach people everything they need to know. He encourages people to do vested equity because of this. But there are some people who will pretend to be committed. There are fake entrepreneurs everywhere that think they have what it takes. So what Jordan does to weed out those people is gives them a small test to see if they’re willing to do it. He said that most of them won’t even come back, which proves that they aren’t willing to work to bring their ideas to life. We then talked about goals and the importance of writing them down. Jordan references a study done by Harvard that says the top percentage of people that graduate and make the most amount of money, were the ones that wrote down their goals. It helps you visualize the things that you want out of your life. Jordan has 4 goals written down and pasted on his wall. He accomplished 2 of the 4, which he attributes partially to writing them down and looking at them every single day. He also has the choice right now to go San Francisco on July 1st, which would make 3 of the 4 successful. Jordan has a mind built for innovation. He loves coming up with tons of ideas. Each day he lists off tons of ideas to himself, because he believes in building his ‘idea muscle,’ which he attributes to an article by James Altucher. He doesn’t want this to become people’s main focus though, because that’s only 1% of the entire equation. He also spent tons of time learning SEO and building niche websites, which led to many consulting job that were very successful. Jordan also uses mind maps to lay out his thoughts. Once thoughts are laid out Jordan thinks it’s important to act on those thoughts and try to experience things. You can’t just learn from sitting around, reading and then doing nothing. You must try to experience life by acting. Jordan also believes it’s really important to find and build a mentor network. You can just reach out and find people who have already done what you want to do. They will be able to help you through the tough times and also teach you things that will help you avoid mistakes that they once made. They want to help people succeed so just reaching out to them asking them to be your mentor is humbling and they’d be more than happy to do so. You need to try and remember that you should provide value in some way on the other end of things. Fast Questions: Favorite book? Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Favorite movie? Limitless & The Social Network Hobbies? Work & Workout Finally, why does Jordan hustle? He hustles to make an impact. He truly wants to pay it forward to his family. Providing a peace of mind for his family is the one thing that he always comes back to. “Money is a terrible master, but a wonderful servant.” He wants aspiring entrepreneurs and others to find out why you hustle. If you don’t know why, the constant work will weigh you down and force you to quit. Ep. 36 Part 2 with Marc Busko - Hustle, Work, Focusing on Strengths, Being Present, and a talk about phones

Welcome back to Part two of Discover the Hustle Podcast where Dylan and Brad interview Marc Busko. Part one was fantastic and part two might just even be better. We dove right back into the interview after our short break. Our first question to Marc, why do you hustle? He breaks down what that means to him. He talks about how he wants to use his specific talents, skills, abilities, and gifts to impact the word and the lives of others. He feels that every single day he has the opportunity to utilize these things to make that impact. He knows that he can utilize his public speaking ability, that very few people have to the level Marc does, to project extreme value to the people in his audience. One of the things he emphasizes is legacy. How does he want to be remembered? How do you want to be remembered? This can help you develop your long term vision and passion. It will be the fuel behind everything that you do for the rest of your life. We then dive into what work is to Marc. Work means blocking off time to climb towards those goals. Work doesn’t have to negative, unless you are stuck in that mindset. You have to understand how fortunate you are for the situation you are in. Once you understand this it’s so much easier to go through your day with fire and passion. Marc truly believes picking something that you do really well and execute on that for the rest of your life. On top of that, he truly believes that if you dislike your current situation then you need to just drop it and start doing something different. Start looking for things you enjoy and work at it. He understands that people need income to support their current situation, whatever that may be, but there is no sense in continuously doing something that you do not enjoy. Money will always follow your passions and vocations. Marc literally encourages you to stop doing what you’re doing if you do not like it, call him, and then work together to figure it out. This is hard to hear for most people. Whether you entirely ready or not, your family, friends, etc. might not be ready to hear that this is the decision you will be make it. So how do you solve this? Put it in their terms. Be honest with them, but give them what they want to hear without sacrificing what your intentions are. At the end of the day, if they aren’t willing to support you then you don’t need this person in your life and as difficult as it may be you need to cut them out. Remember, just try to meet in the middle. It all goes back to being intentional. So how do you go about cutting these people out of your life? Well once you realize they are starting to fall off and not reciprocate the same effort that you’re putting forward, you just stop trying. It just becomes pointless, because they aren’t committed to the same level as you in providing value through that friendship. Friendships are two way streets that take value provided from both sides. If it’s not coming from the other side, then just cut them out. We talked about one of our biggest pet peeves, which is the phrase “pick your brain.” It means someone is trying to take what they can and provide no value. We are all huge believers of giving more in the relationship than you take. This is something that Gary Vee really pushes. You can always find some way to provide value in any relationship. You can go above and beyond without expecting anything in return, and more often than not you will be surprised with what you end up receiving. Marc gives a great example of what he did for a company in New York that covered the New York tech scene. He then dives into how the first email you ever send to a company should not be asking for a job. You need to spend time getting to know the company and the people, before you send cold emails or phone calls asking for a job. Effort wins every single time. Make the extra effort to show people how much you care. Towards the middle we asked Marc if he would change anything about his life up until this point. He said if anything he would focus on being in the moment more. You will live a more fulfilled life and actually enjoy/remember the special times you’ve had. It’s time to put our phones down and focus in on everything going around us. It’s so easy to get caught up in technology with today’s world, but it’s really important to have those times to disengage and really just take in everything going on around you. Especially when interacting with others. It shouldn’t be a kind gesture to put your phone down when talking to someone or just not pick it up at all. It SHOULDN’T be, because it SHOULD be expected. It should be expected that you will give that person your undivided attention. And in case you were wondering, Marc chooses experiences over money every time. As he moves to Philly he’s taking his essentials and just planning on enjoying the time he will have out there. Another great recommendation (they never stop) that Marc has is trying to set your notifications to off. No sounds, no vibrations. He chooses to use the “dumb” smart phone. His phone will light up for messages and phone calls, but besides that he will not receive anything else. This gives him so much freedom over his day. He is in charge and can remain focused without using his phone. You truly learn that you aren’t missing out on that much. You need to respect your own time and not let other people control your day. Finally, we wrap up with Marc’s phone screen. He has his entire phone categorized into folders. He is extremely organized and his phone reflects that. And if he had to recommend one app right now, he would choose Slack. It makes communication very smooth and has everything you need. He also loves notes, because he can pop in quick reminders or important things so he won’t forget. Now really, finally, spend the summer thinking about what you’re good at. Spend time alone and ask what your strengths are. What can you do with it? Learn about yourself and start developing it. Ask your closest friends what you’re good and truly figure it out. Pick those trends and capitalize on those things. Choose them, develop them, and then act on them. Ep. 34 The Importance of Maintaining an Open Mind

This week on Discover the Hustle Podcast we talk about the Millennial Mindset. Basically we really dive into the importance of having an open mind and the comparison across generations. We think that many millennials have an open mind to change, more than the older generations. In our mind, education of any kind, is really a stepping stone to open mindedness. The realization that you will never know all sides to everything helps you take a step back and listen to what others have to say. We have access to the Internet, which opens our minds to so many different sources of media. When comparing this to older generations, change wasn’t readily moving that quickly. We were born into an era where technology progressed so quickly we had to change. The Internet truly accelerated the projection of opinions of everyone else. As millennials, our communities have branched out to more than just our immediate family and friends. We can join online communities through social media and other Internet sources, which help develop our open minds. Because we see so many opinions, were almost forced to be open. We truly believe that open mindedness accelerates growth as a human being, or entity of any kind. You see what’s possible. It’s not about being soft and people pleasing. It’s about respecting other people’s opinions and learning from their backgrounds/experiences. Everyone believes what they do for some reason. If you want to even begin to change their mind, you must find the root of why they believe what they do. This is done through conversation, not argument. You will hear stories of our experiences with others and their unwillingness to be open minded.   Our question to you: How have you personally worked to become an open minded person? Ep. 33 Pitching to Shark Tank’s Daymond John

This week on Discover the Hustle podcast we talk about and GIVE our pitch that we will be giving to Daymond John. Daymond is known widely from the TV show ‘Shark Tank’ and from his book ‘Power of Broke”. He is a very popular investor and widely respected among many including the business world. Because we wanted to have an upload ready for you this week, we decided to show you what we will be presenting to Daymond. We will have the video version/actual pitch recorded and uploaded as soon as we can. In case you wanted to follow along the pitch will be placed below. Good afternoon everyone, my name is Dylan Parks, I’m a senior at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and the ceo of golf shots. My name is Brad Ploch I’m the CMO and also a senior at UWO. Quick show of hands for us, how many of you have a friend or family member that golfs? Now keep your hand up if you know exactly what you’re getting this person for Christmas, their next birthday, or any other gift giving occasion? If you’ve ever tried to go shopping for a golfer, you know how hard it is. Do you choose the $1000 set of clubs or the $2 bag of tees? These options make it hard to show how much you care about them without breaking the bank. The good news is we have a solution. You see, golf today isn’t the same game our grandparents or even our parents played. The game is shifting to become more of a socializing opportunity for younger golfers, often accompanied by beer and hard liquor. So we wanted to create a fun and unique way for golfers to enjoy the game more, on and off the course. What’s great is that it’s also an affordable gift idea for your special golfer. This new product is Golf Shots, the world’s first golf ball shaped shot glass. Simply fill up golf shots with liquor at home, discreetly keep it in your golf bag, and while you’re out on the course take golf shots out for the round between rounds. Or you can also meet up off the course  and have golf shots for an excuse to get together with your golf buddies. Golf Shots comes in a sleeve of 3 just like normal golf balls, holds 1.5 oz of any liquid, and is patent pending. Golf Shots is sold for just $15. When producing more than 5,000 sleeves we can manufacture and package each sleeve of 3 for just $1.50. Over the past 6 months, we have placed in various competitions, received grant funding, and in just the first week of pre orders we were able to do $2,000 in sales, which we are now working on filling with 3D printed inventory. We are currently searching for either an investment of $25,000 to begin manufacturing or for an established company to do a licensing deal with. The $25,000 would be used for the cost of the molds, our first production run, and advertising. After we launch golf shots we want to expand our product line by creating fun, new ways for every sports fan to drink. We want to say thank you to the judges for being here, Thank you all for attending, now let’s have ourselves a round. Ep. 32 Our $5,000 Mistake

This week on Discover the Hustle Podcast we talk about learning from your mistakes. We talked about some personal mistakes we’ve made recently in our business. One notable story was this; we were looking to a design/manufacturing company for Golf Shots. They told us that they could finish up the project over the next month or so and that we could pay half up front and half at the end. This is a popular manufacturing company and was recommend to us by someone we trusted, so we said yes. So roughly 3-4 months had gone by with very little communication on their end, and admittedly we should have followed up more often, but I digress. We ended up spending $5,000 for a poorly created design. It was a hard lesson, because at this point this was essentially all of the money that we had personally invested in the company. It really set us back, but we knew we couldn’t just sit on our hands. So what did we do? Well we started searching for someone who could help us finish the design. We went to the guys in Milwaukee who were already doing some prototype printing for us and they agreed to help finish the design. So here we are just a month and a half later, with a nearly finished design and some product creation actually happening. So what can you pull from our story? You can find help sometimes right underneath your nose. Sometimes you just have to take a step back and start asking for help. Find someone in your industry, or someone who has gone through what you are going through and ask for help. It’s okay to do that. Most of the time people will be more than happy to help, because they knew what it was like to be in that situation. We also preluded to a future episode about outsourcing and how valuable that can be. We’ll save that piece for that episode! But going along with that, you don’t have to and shouldn’t try to do everything by yourself. It makes it very difficult to manage all the things you have going on. Find people who compliment your strengths and bring them aboard. Again, people genuinely like to be a part of something bigger than themselves and will more than likely be willing to help you out! Another key thing to note that we heard from Tim Ferriss is this; If it’s not a “Hell Yes” it should be a “Hell No.” This will come in handy as you progress as a person in any walk of life. We should not be confined to always saying yes, because we feel inclined to do things. On top of that, you will always give things a better effort if you actually want to do them, which means pick s*** you actually like doing! And to finish this off, don’t spread yourself too thin. Pick those things you genuinely want to do and rock them. It’s about depth of execution, not how many things you can do mediocrely. If you can start to see your mistakes as learning opportunities you’re well on your way in this journey to become a better you and discover your hustle.   Twitter: @brad_ploch & @dylanmparks Instagram: @brad_ploch & @dylanmparks Snapchat: @brad.ploch & @dylanmparks Facebook: facebook.com/brad.ploch * facebook.com/dylanmichaelparks DiscoverTheHustle.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LodosBtoB0A Intro music by: JPB – High https://soundcloud.com/anis-jay
