Episode in
Divi Nation Podcast
Hey Divi Nation we’re back this week with our last podcast to appear on this blog! What?! Yes, it’s true. After this week we’ll be transitioning the Divi Nation podcast and video show to a Facebook livestream on Thursday’s at 3pm EST. It will also be available after the livestream on YouTube and iTunes (or wherever you listen to podcasts). The full details for this change can be found below and in the show itself (at the end).
But that’s just an announcement. Today’s episode is a really fun one you definitely don’t want to miss. I got to interview Noëlle Steegs, a Divi powered digital nomad currently living and working from the South African wilderness.
Check it out!
Becoming a Divi Powered Digital Nomad with Noëlle Steegs– The Divi Nation Podcast, Episode 64
In this episode I interview Noëlle Steegs of noellesteegs.com.
Noëlle is a freelance web designer living the Digital Nomad lifestyle. In fact, when I caught up with her earlier this week she was out in the African bush using her iPad to join me on Skype.
Which, if you ask me, is pretty cool.
We’ve had some folks on the show before who have taken their life and businesses on the road in RV’s or vans or campers, but I don’t think we’ve ever talked to someone who lives out of a backpack all over the world. Which is a much more minimal and tricky way to work—but as you can imaging—very rewarding too.
During the course of our conversation Noëlle shares her WordPress and Divi story and then dives deep into a whole slew of tips for anyone interesting into becoming a digital nomad themselves.
All that and more in today’s episode of Divi Nation.

Establishing a Divi Powered Side Hustle with Jared McDowell – The Divi Nation Podcast, Episode 63
Episode in
Divi Nation Podcast
Hey Divi Nation, we’re back with another full length episode. This time around we’re talking about Divi as a side hustle. Something we don’t normally talk about because it’s so easy to make a full time living with Divi. But hey, when that’s the case, why not encourage folks looking for a fun, fulfilling, and profitable side hustle to look into Divi too? That’s what this week’s guest Jared McDowell does and he couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
Establishing a Divi Powered Side Hustle with Jared McDowell – The Divi Nation Podcast, Episode 63
In this episode I get to interview Jared McDowell of JMAN Designs out of Texas. Jared is a really active community member on the Divi Facebook groups and on the blog. He’s also got a really great story and approach to working with WordPress and Divi.
For Jared, web design is a side hustle. It’s not something he wants to become his full time job, but it’s a passion he enjoys and something that earns him extra cash—which is always nice.
During the course of our conversation Jared shares with us how to balances a full time job, family life, and a web design side hustle. We talk tools, best practices, and more.
All that, in today’s episode of Divi Nation.

Jared’s Essential Divi Side Hustle Tips:
Be honest with yourself. Know what you are capable of and what your schedule and life season will allow.
Get organized. Focus upfront on getting all of your systems and workflows ironed out so that you can be as efficient as possible with the time you do have. Jared recommends using Microsoft OneNote or something similar that allows you to sync your tasks/project planning across all of your devices.
Invest in yourself on a regular basis. Make sure you’re growing as a person and a designer–not simply working all the time.

How to Create Your First Divi Nation Meetup (in Just 4 Steps!) – Divi Nation Short
Episode in
Divi Nation Podcast
Hey Divi Nation! We’ve got a little something different for you this week in the form of a new Divi Nation Short. In this episode I’ll be talking about three things: First, I’ll be providing an update on where our Meetup community is at and what our goals are for the remainder of the year. Second, I’ll explain how you can become a Divi Nation Meetup Event Host. And finally, I’ll walk you through how to go about getting your first Divi Nation Meetup off the ground.
Sounds good? I hope so, because here we go!

1. Divi Nation Meetup Update
Ok so let’s talk about where the Divi Nation Meetup community is right now.
From a purely numbers perspective, we’re just shy of 500 members. This is pretty modest growth for the year; averaging out to about 17 new members per month.
It’s clear to me that growth in our member count is closely tied to how many events we do per year. We get the bulk of our new members whenever we start promoting a new Meetup here on the blog. So if we’re going to see more growth in the remainder of this year and throughout 2018, we’ll need to schedule a lot more meet ups.
That’s where the next stat comes into play! I’m happy to report that we now have eleven community members who have volunteered themselves to organize local meetups in their areas.
It looks like two of them, Kolleen and Patty Rose, have organized one new event and I’ve head rumblings from others that their first event is one the way too.
In my experience, it’s the first event that takes the longest to get going but after you have a few under your belt it can really start to pick up.
Which brings us to our second point.
2. How You Can Become a Divi Nation Meetup Host
This one is easy so it won’t take much time to explain. If you’re interested in becoming a local host for Divi Nation events, all you have to do is join our meetup page and send me a message on there expressing your interest. We’ll have a short back and forth, I’ll share with you our Event Host Handbook, and then we’ll work together to get your first event on the calendar. Easy as that!
And to prove it, I’m going to share a bit of our Event Host Handbook with you to show you the kinds of resources we’re developing for the community to use.
3. How to Launch Your First Divi Nation Meetup
1. Choose a topic and a Format

2. Book a Venue
The following types of venues are viable options in most towns or cities:
Public Library
Community Center
Startup or Tech Incubator
Co-working Spaces
Colleges
Coffee Shops
Bars/Restaurants
When booking your venue, take the following things into account:
Is the location easy to find?
Is there space for 10-20 people?
Will the group have enough quiet and privacy to conduct a meaningful discussion?
Is there equipment available for you to do presentations? (Projector, screen, etc.)
Are there plenty of plugs available for people who have brought laptops?
Is it ok to have food and drinks?
Are there accessible bathrooms?
Is the location handicap accessible?
3. Create Your Event Posting
At this point you’ve already done all the hards stuff. Now all that’s left to do is create your posting and promote it!
Meetup is an incredibly simple tool to use and our event host handbook has step by step instructions on how to create your posting and what details you should include.
4. Promote Your Meetup(s)
Once you’ve created your Event posting it’s time to promote it.
The first and easiest thing you should do is announce your event. This is a feature of Meetup that simply notifies everyone who is a member of our group that a new event is on the calendar.
After that though, it’s time to get creative. Here are a few promotional tips that should help though:
Leverage your personal network. If you know people in your area who use Divi, shoot them an email, text, Facebook message, tweet, smoke signal, or whatever it takes to let them know you’ve got an event planned just for them.
Once you get a few RSVP’s ask those attendees to leverage their personal networks too.
Start a Facebook group for your meetup.
Create flyers and place them at coffee shops, around universities, etc.
Ask to be placed on the announcements of local newspapers, blogs, or newsletters in your area.
Schedule and announce 3+ meetups in advance. This allows people to get in the habit of RSVPing to your event and attending on a regular basis.
If you want to go really crazy, we have an even more complete list of ideas in our Event Organizer Handbook. Which, if you follow it to the letter, we’re confident you’ll have an active local Divi meetup in no time.
And that’s it, that’s how you—yes, you—can start your very own local Divi Nation Meetup in just four steps.
So get on Meetup today. Join our page. Shoot me a message. And let’s get the process started.
Go to Divi Nation Meetup Page
See You Next Week!
Well that’s all for this week’s episode. I hope this has inspired some of you to join our Meetup Group and start hosting Divi Nation Meetup in your local area. If you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments section below!

Breaking Into the Divi Economy with Jerry Simmons – The Divi Nation Podcast, Episode 62
Episode in
Divi Nation Podcast
Hey Divi Nation, we’re back this week with another episode of our podcast and video show that highlights yet another standout individual in our community. This week, I got to sit down and chat with Jerry Simmons.
Jerry is someone who broke into the Divi economy by scoring a job with prominent community member Geno Quiroz over at Monterey Premiere. If you’re someone who has been enjoying using Divi and wondering how you might be able to turn it into a career, then you’ll want to watch or listen to this episode to hear how he did it.
Breaking Into the Divi Economy with Jerry Simmons – The Divi Nation Podcast, Episode 62
In this episode I interview Jerry Simmons of Monterey Premier.
Jerry is a very active community member, particularly in the Facebook groups. But he’s also known to show up at WordCamps and Meetups (like the most recent one out in Orange County that a large number of Divi Community members attended).
Jerry is also one of my favorite types of community members. He’s someone who came to WordPress and Divi from a completely different background (Jerry’s a pastor by trade) and yet is now able (after a few crash courses) to work professionally in this field.
He’s also a Divi Nation first! He’s the first person we’ve ever had on the show who’s not a freelancer or founder of a third party, but a dedicated staff member of a third party Divi product creator or service provider. Something that I find really satisfying as it’s a great indicator of community (and industry) growth.
During the course of our conversation, Jerry and I discuss why he made is transition into WordPress and Divi, what skills and attributes have served hime well, and tips on how others can do the same thing.
All that and more in today’s episode of Divi Nation.

Our Recommended Video/Audio Gear and Software
Below we’ve created some quick and easy reference links for you to see the gear and software we recommended during the show.
The Absolute Basics
It’s really incredible that you can get started creating professional quality videos and podcasts with an initial investment of less than $400. In the podcast above we recommend going one step further though, and paying a bit more for better audio–which can really make a huge difference. However, the draw-back there is that even though the higher end mic we most recommend is just $229, it won’t do you much good without the other items listed below it which increases the overall expense quite a bit. It’s probably better to get started with just the gear in this basics section first and then upgrade as your efforts begin to bear fruit.
HD Webcam – Logitec HD Pro Webcam c920 ($62)
Beginner Light Kit – LimoStudio 700W Photography Softbox Lightingg Kit ($58)
Pro-sumer Quality USB Mic – Blue Yeti Pro ($249)
Professional Quality Audio Gear (Still Affordable)
Even though the audio gear below is more expensive than the single usb mic above, it’s still amazing just how good you can make yourself sound for comparatively so little. This mic and setup is literally the same mic and accessories you will see in a lot of professional broadcasting settings. Well worth the cost if you’re ready for it.
High Quality Mic – Rode Procaster ($229)
High Quality Audio Interface – Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 ($150)
Mic Cables – Cable Matters 2-Pack Male to Female XLR Microphone Cable 6 Feet ($27)
Desktop Boom Arm – RODE PSA1 Swivel Mount Studio Microphone Boom Arm ($109)
Mic Shockmount – RODE PSM 1 Shockmount for Procaster ($49)
Professional Quality Video Gear (Still Affordable)
So this section and the software section below is where the costs begin to rise. But again, when comparing what professional video and audio studios tend to pay for high end gear and software, this stuff is still quite affordable. Especially if you have a marketing budget and put this stuff to smart use that begins earning for you.
As we talked about in the podcast, if you’re in front of your computer doing interviews and livestreams you may not even need this gear. The webcam above will do just fine. But if you’re going out and doing “man on the street” or talking head videos (like our own video intros and outros) then you’ll want at least one of the two cameras below. Or something similar.
And of course we can’t forget the lights. The basic kit above will get the job done but they’re not a sturdy or as capable of fine tuning the exact color temperature you want as the adjustable LED kit below.
High Quality Video (Short Videos) – Sony Alpha a 6500 Body ($1,398 + lens and accessories)
High Quality Video (Long Videos) – Canon XA30 Pro Camcorder ($1,999 + accessories)
LED Light Kit (Highly Portable) – Fovitec StudioPRO 1x Bi Colorr 600 LED Panel ($272 each)
Professional Quality Software
This is the section where most people will just have to bite the bullet and shell out if they want high quality video and audio. You simply can’t do the kind of editing (or broadcasting in the case of livestreaming) you need to do if you don’t have the right software.
If you’re just doing screencasting tutorials then you could probably get away with just buying Screenflow or Camtasia. But if you’d like to promo videos with people on screen and livestreams on Facebook, YouTube and more–then you’ll likely want to get both Creative Cloud and Wirecast. And of course, if you’re doing interviews via Skype then you’ll need to get eCamm. But the good news there is that it’s pretty cheap.
This section is not cheap, but it is essential to getting the job done right.
Video/Audio/Motion Graphics and more – Adobe Creative Cloud ($70/month)
Screencasting for Mac – Screenflow (starts at $129)
Screencasting for PC – Camtasia (starts at $199)
Live Streaming – Wirecast (starts at $695)
Call Recording – eCamm Call Recorder ($30)
See You Next Week!

Hey Divi Nation, we’re back with another live interview! This time with a brand new developer here at Elegant Themes, Travis Seitler. Talk to People Who Eat Ice Cream with Josh Pollock – The Divi Nation Podcast, Episode 56
Episode in
Divi Nation Podcast
Hey Divi Nation! We’re back this week with a guest and an interview who’s been a long time coming: Josh Pollock. Anyone who’s active in the WordPress Community and attending WordCamps regularly is likely to have heard of Josh or even met him in person. Josh is an excellent ambassador of WordPress, a supporter of Divi and the Divi Community, and someone I’m sure we can all learn from. Check out his episode below!
Talk to People Who Eat Ice Cream with Josh Pollock – The Divi Nation Podcast, Episode 56
In this episode I interview Josh Pollock. Josh is widely know for his company Caldera Labs, creators of the popular Caldera Forms plugin.
I’m super excited to have Josh on the show today because he’s such a good culture fit for the Divi Community—even though he’s kind of got his own thing going on.
Josh is someone who loves to tinker, loves to learn, create, and empower others. That’s really at the heart of what we do here and a set of values we like to promote because it tends to make good entrepreneurs, good community members, and more importantly for the purposes of this podcast—good conversations.
In our conversation Josh and I talk about a lot of stuff, but we kept coming back to the one thing that he credits for the growth of his business and the maturation of his products.
And yes, it does have something to do with ice cream. Sort of.

Big Change Coming Next Week on the Divi Nation Podcast
Next week will be the first week that our new content team member Augustine Mak hosts an episode of Divi Nation. But it won’t be the last! In fact, moving forward, Augustine will be hosting most (if not all) of our Divi Nation Shorts.
The idea behind this change is that as the podcast and our YouTube content both grow in scope and volume we’d like to improve the quality of each piece we put out. The best way to accomplish this is to collaborate on some aspects while splitting other things up between the two of us.
By spending more time on writing and recording out interviews I hope to make the stories and lessons shared on the Divi Nation podcast unforgettable. And at the same time, Mak will have more time to dive deeper into Divi tutorials–making Divi Nation Shorts something truly special.
So make sure you come back next week for more Divi Nation goodness and a brand new host!
Also, be sure to subscribe to our email newsletter and YouTube channel so that you never miss a big announcement, useful tip, or Divi freebie!

Divi Nation Podcast
Welcome to Day 32 of our Divi 100 Marathon. Keep tuning in for 100 days in a row of awesome Divi resources as we count down to the amazing release of Divi 3.0 on the final day of the series!
If I’ve learned one thing creating tutorials for Divi it’s that the community loves tinkering with the Divi Menus. As a staff, we are well aware of the desire for more Divi Menu options and look to expand upon the header/menu options we already provide in future updates. But in the meantime, we’re happy to offer little tips, tricks, and hacks that can be applied to the Divi header/menu area and today’s post is just that.
How to Add Icons to the Divi Menu – Divi Nation Short
In this episode of Divi Nation our new Divi video tutorial specialist Augustine Mak shows you how you can add icons to Divi’s menus. This simple menu hack can be used in a number of creative ways to improve the appearance and user experience of your Divi website’s header/menu section. Enjoy!

Summary: How to Add Icons to the Divi Menu
In this tutorial we’re going to show you how to add an icon to a Divi menu. It may be easier than you think!
The first thing you need to do is actually design or acquire an icon with a transparent background. If you’re creating the icon yourself, be sure to save it as a transparent png.
Next, add a new page to your website (keep it as a draft, do not publish). Upload the icon you’ve just created to that page and in the text tab, copy the embed code. Once you’ve copied the code delete that page draft and navigate to Appearance > Menus.
Add a custom link to your menu. Put whatever destination link you would like into the link area. In the text area, paste the image code you copied a moment earlier.
Add the new custom link to your menu and click save. You should now have a Divi menu with an icon in it.

Welcome to Day 25 of our Divi 100 Marathon. Keep tuning in for 100 days in a row of awesome Divi resources as we count down to the amazing release of Divi 3.0 on the final day of the series!
In this episode of Divi Nation we begin a series of internal interviews with the Elegant Themes Design and Development team. During the Divi 100 Marathon, as we count down to the release of Divi 3.0, we thought it would be a great time for the community to meet the people responsible for creating the theme we all use and love.
These interviews are not necessarily done in a particular order, basically just who on the team could sync up with me on a give week to chat. For our first interview, I spoke with Thierry Muller, a relatively new member of the team who has joined us remotely from Switzerland. Enjoy!
Developer Thierry Muller on Creating Divi 3.0, Quality Code, and WordPress Community – The Divi Nation Podcast, Episode 25
In this conversation Thierry and I get into a wide range of subjects including his WordPress and web development story, joining the Elegant Themes team, and working towards the future of Divi. Ultimately things always come back around to Divi itself and the work going into Divi 3.0 to make it our biggest and most anticipated release yet.
I hope you enjoy this conversation and if have any questions for Thierry please leave them in the comments section below.

Summary: How to Hide the Divi Logo on a Single Page
What we’r going to do in this Divi Quick Tip is show you how to hide the Divi logo on specific pages using that page’s ID. To begin, navigate in your WordPress Admin to Pages and then click the edit link for whichever page you would like to hide the Divi logo on.
In the URL bar a the top of your screen you will notice that it outputs a specific page ID that such as post=48. Keep that tab open and in another tab go to Divi > Theme Options and scroll down to your Custom CSS panel. Paste the following code into the Custom CSS panel.
.page-id-YOURPAGEIDNUMBER #logo {
display: none;
}
As you can see in the snippet above there is a bit of placeholder text. Replace “YOURPAGEIDNUMBER” with the page ID number that you located in the first step. In my example, the final snippet will look like this.
.page-id-48 #logo {
display: none;
}
When you’ve successfully pasted the snippet and added your page ID number to it, click the “Save Changes” button. You can now go to the page in question on the front-end, refresh, and notice that the logo is hidden.
Next Week on the Divi Nation Podcast
Starting next week on the Divi Nation Podcast I will be interviewing members of our design and development team here at Elegant Themes. Welcome to Day 11 of our Divi 100 Marathon. Keep tuning in for 100 days in a row of awesome Divi resources as we count down to the amazing release of Divi 3.0 on the final day of the series!
Many members of the Divi Community, including Elegant Themes itself, use or are a part of a distributed work force of designers, developers, content creators, and project managers. Having the right tools in place and establishing a good workflow for incoming projects is essential to success. Otherwise you risk dropping tasks, miscommunication, and overall disorganization–all of which can drastically effect your company’s bottom line. If not erase it all together. That’s why in my talk with Cory Jenkins of Aspen Grove Studios we focused on how they manager their team and the tools that make it all possible.

How to Add the Divi Builder to Custom Post Types and Third Party Plugins – Divi Nation Short
Episode in
Divi Nation Podcast
Welcome to Day 4 of our Divi 100 Marathon. Keep tuning in for 100 days in a row of awesome Divi resources as we count down to the amazing release of Divi 3.0 on the final day of the series!
In today’s episode of Divi Nation we decided to tackle another big community request: adding the Divi Builder to Custom Post Types. This is by far one of the most asked for Divi tutorials and we’re excited to share with you a new way of using Divi to do more.
How to Add the Divi Builder to Custom Post Types and Third Party Plugins – Divi Nation Short
In the video above I’m going to show you how to add the Divi Builder to Custom Post Types and Third Party Plugins (that are using custom post types).
It’s important to note however, that this method will not work with every single custom post type out there. Or with every third party plugin using custom post types.
This is because we’ve made the Divi Builder to only work out of the box in environments where we know it will perform flawlessly.
Outside of those constraints, things begin to get more complex. And we can’t possibly account for every kind of custom post type variation in a single snippet.
So if you plan on following along with the video above, I want to stress a few points:
1. Back everything up.
2. Use a child theme.
3. Test this method on a staging or dev site. Not your live site.
4. If this method of adding the Divi Builder to your specific custom post type does not work as you see in this video—that likely indicates that your specific case will require custom development. Something we won’t be able to provide in the comments.
Ok, with all of our important notices and caveats behind us, let’s add the Divi Builder to some custom post types!

Summary: Adding the PHP Snippet to Your Child Theme’s Functions.php File
The first thing you need to do is copy the php code snippet below into your child theme’s functions.php file.
function my_et_builder_post_types( $post_types ) {
$post_types[] = 'YOUR_CPT_HERE';
$post_types[] = 'ANOTHER_CPT_HERE';
return $post_types;
}
add_filter( 'et_builder_post_types', 'my_et_builder_post_types' );
Next, find the name of the post type you’d like to add the Divi Builder to and replace the placeholder text “YOUR_CPT_HERE” and “ANOTHER_CPT_HERE” as you can see in the image above.
If you don’t know what the name of your post type is, then simply create a new post with it and look at the url. It will tell you what the name of that post type is. As you can see in the image below.
Bonus: Adding CSS For CPT UI Post Types
If, as I show you in the video, you have created a new custom post type using the Custom Post Type UI plugin you will need the CSS below to paste into your custom CSS panel under Divi > Theme Options > Custom CSS. This will allow your new custom post type builder content to display properly.
/*Replace “POST_TYPE” with the slug for your new CPT created with CPTUI.
___________________________________________________________*/
.et_pb_pagebuilder_layout.single-POST_TYPE #page-container .et_pb_row {
width: 100%;
}
.et_pb_pagebuilder_layout.single-POST_TYPE #page-container .et_pb_with_background .et_pb_row {
width: 80%;
}

Divi Mobile Menu Hack: Collapsing Nested Menu Items – Divi Nation Short

Divi Nation Podcast
Do you have 30 seconds to improve your Divi mobile menu? If so, then you’re going to love today’s Divi Nation Short. In it I’m going to show you how to collapse nested menu items so that mobile visitors can navigate large and/or busy mobile menus more easily.
Divi Mobile Menu Hack: Collapsing Nested Sub Menu Items
In this Divi Quick Tip I’ll be sharing with you a simple but very useful Divi Mobile Menu hack that allows you to collapse nested menu items, making your mobile menu more manageable for your mobile visitors.
If you have any questions about this hack (or anything that I cover in this video) I’d be happy to help in the comments section below.

Summary: How to Collapse Nested Sub Menu Items on Divi’s Mobile Menu
A standard Divi mobile menu
The image above shows what a normal Divi mobil menu looks like. As you can see, the nested items are expanded so that everything is visible. However, if you have several parent menu items with several sub menu items each, your mobile menu may start to become rather cumbersome and difficult to navigate.
What this Divi mobile menu hack is going to do is allow you to collapse those nested items so that mobile visitors can quickly locate the parent item they want before seeing the expanded options beneath it.
To accomplish this, copy the code snippet below:
<style>
.et_mobile_menu .menu-item-has-children > a { background-color: transparent; }
#main-header .et_mobile_menu li ul.sub-menu.hide { display: none !important; visibility: hidden !important; transition: all 1.5s ease-in-out;}
#main-header .et_mobile_menu li ul.sub-menu.visible { display: block !important; visibility: visible !important; }
.et_mobile_menu .menu-item-has-children > a:after { content: '+'; position: absolute; right: 20px; }
</style>
<script>
(function($) {
function setup_collapsible_submenus() {
var $menu = $('#mobile_menu'),
top_level_link = '#mobile_menu > .menu-item-has-children > a';
$menu.find('a').each(function() {
$(this).off('click');
if ( $(this).is(top_level_link) ) {
$(this).attr('href', '#');
$(this).next('.sub-menu').addClass('hide');
}
if ( ! $(this).siblings('.sub-menu').length ) {
$(this).on('click', function(event) {
$(this).parents('.mobile_nav').trigger('click');
});
} else {
$(this).on('click', function(event) {
event.preventDefault();
$(this).next('.sub-menu').toggleClass('visible');
});
}
});
}
$(window).load(function() {
setTimeout(function() {
setup_collapsible_submenus();
}, 700);
});
})(jQuery);
</script>
Then, navigate to Divi Theme Options > Integrations > Add code to the body. Paste the above code into that text box and click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page.
Now, when you refresh on the front end you should have a mobile menu that looks like the images below.
Our new collapsed mobile menu.
Our new mobile menu expanded.
